Mitzi's 2019 - Grow, grow, grow your Bhut

Sorry about the title; it just came to mind.  Warning:  This glog will most likely be EXTREMELY BORING - read at your own risk.  2019 will be my third "proper" year growing chillies.  I'm still at the newbie stage of wanting to try every variety of several species and haven't yet managed to narrow it down to particular favourites.  Consequently most of my planned grow is made up of things that are new to me.

Decided to go for more baccatums next year as they seem to do well in my climate; they take months to ripen but then I get a glut.  Gluts are very welcome in my house.  Will grow a few annuals as ornamentals outside the front door and also some I hope are reliable enough to get a crop from even if we have a bad summer.  I love the challenge of growing really hot peppers even though I don't have a greenhouse so that means some chinenses.  So it's quite a mixture.  Only one rocoto so, if it's successful, I should get true seed from it to re-stock the European Seed Train (EST).

They are all aphid-infested and somewhat sick looking so I'm not sure any of them will make it.  I certainly need to deal with the aphids in the next few weeks before I start sowing seeds.  My other half (OH) has banned plants from the bedroom windowsill which is the best place in the house (south-facing.)  I've snuck three tiny ones on there but most of the rest are languishing in a north-facing window so are getting no sunlight whatsoever.

This year (2018) I had 38 pots outside plus three indoors, making 41 pots of 35 varieties, plus about a dozen more plants which never got potted up into proper pots.  Approximately 40 pots will be my limit again for next year but I would like to grow more than one plant of some varieties so ideally I need to whittle the list down to 30 varieties or fewer from the 56+ above.

How on earth does one choose?

Every morning and every night (and sometimes in between too) I peek into the box looking for signs of life.  There are none.

Grow, you little sods seeds, grow!

Problem is that I'm going away in a couple of weeks' time so I want to get them pricked out before then, otherwise if they germinate when I am away they will be languishing in a dark cupboard, which won't do them any good.  I don't have anywhere light that is warm enough.

We have lift-off. First signs of life last night. This morning all four SB MoA WHP X seeds are sprouting plus a couple of ChilliWilly's Red and possibly also a Yellow. If I can find them, I'll post photos of those pods in the hope of getting them identified. (The person who sent them to me bought them as Carolina Reapers. They clearly aren't reapers but are very hot.)

Yesterday I sowed my second batch of seeds; another eight varieties.  One baccatum and the rest are chinenses:
  1. Aji Guyana Rush F2
  2. Bhut Jolokia Peach
  3. Bhut Jolokia White
  4. Black Cayman
  5. Havana Gold
  6. Matthew Arthur SB (red)
  7. TFM SB
Plus another one I can't remember!  It may be Peach Fatalii.

Not sowing any more until February because I'm going away the second half of January so won't have time to prick them out etc.  Hope that doesn't adversely affect them too much.

I think I’ve been misled about Havana Gold.  I’ve seen it described as “all the habanero flavour but only half the heat” as also is Trinidad Perfume.  So I assumed it was a chinense.  However, having sown it, I’ve now looked it up online and although the pictures vary from pale yellow to deep orange, they all look more like baccatums than chinenses, and it is defined as such in some sites / catalogues.  So, assuming it’s a baccatum, how on earth can it have “habanero flavour”?  Admittedly I’ve only tasted a limited selection of baccatums but all of those have had a quite different flavour – more fruity and fresh tasting – than habaneros or any other chinenses I have tasted.  It can’t possibly have habanero flavour, can it?

Although I am planning a baccatum-heavy grow this year, I’ve had enough of growing almost heatless ones (White Fantasy and Aji Champion last year) so I might just bin it off.  However, I’ve sown it already and only have a few seeds left (three IIRC) so if I don’t grow these on then I might lose my chance.  I guess I could always buy some seeds if I ever got the urge to grow it in future.  I guess I just resent having given it prime growing time when there are other things I want to grow that haven’t been sown yet.

Unless you're actually going to lose out on something else by doing it, my suggestion would be to grow it in a smallish pot until it fruits and save seeds if you end up enjoying the flavor and heat. It's hardly a massive time investment given the number of other plants you'll be taking care of at the same time.

+1 'Fish.  Hate to see a plant get 86ed. If you have space, that is.

Something perhaps you need to know about me is that I am a compulsive hoarder and have extreme difficulty throwing anything away.  I often say I will bin chilli plants and very rarely do it.  Anyway, these haven't germinated yet so they might not even grow.

Speaking of things not germinating, the PDN x BMJ (White Lightning) seeds haven't germinated yet so I might not end up with any of those.

Be patient, some of my PDN x BMJ took 17 and 18 days.
Some of the white version of Trippas cross just
seem to be boogers to germinate. Will be interesting
to see how Heefy, Sim and Snagglepuss do with them.

Good luck going forward, Mitzi!

Slow germination rate, Im sure some hooks will be showing up soon

Well, you were all right - the PDN x BMJ seeds are germinating, a fortnight after sowing them. Hope they grow on well.
That is so awesome, Mitzi! When you can,
be sure to get a pic and post to the PDN x BMJ
thread. Good going!

Pricked out some more seedlings last night so now I have 19 in total of 9 varieties:

2 x SB WHP x
2 x BBG White
2 x CW Yellow
3 x CW Red
2 x Guyana Rush
2 x Peach Jolokia
1 x White Jolokia
3 x White Lightning
2 x SB MA

I'm going away tomorrow so I hope my OH remembers to water them.

Still seven varieties not germinated including what was going to be my only rocoto this year (orange manzano.)

Excellent results all around, Mitzi
Patience is its own reward!

Especially glad to see you have 3 of the
PdN x BMJ White Lightening going.  Can't
wait to see how they look when you get back!

Ok, let's see if this works... they are the dark - leaf ones.

This morning I potted up three lanky seedlings from the airing cupboard into porridge pots:
- Peach Jolokia
- Havana Gold
- Guyana Rush
plus a ChilliWilly Red from a Jiffy 7 into a porridge pot and a White Jolokia into a Jiffy 7.

The seeds I was waiting for have arrived. Today I have soaked and sown:
- Coyote Zan White
- Caramel Moruga Scorpion
- Rocoto Canario Yellow
- El Oro Del Trinidad
- Sugar Rush Cream
- BOC
- Criolla Sella
- Guyana

Soaking overnight in weak chamomile tea:
- Aji Berry Amarillo
- Aji Mango
- 7 Pot Burgundy
- BBG 7 Pot Red*
- TFM SB*
- Cayman Black*
- Peach Fatalii*
- Uber Fatalii*

* Second and final attempt at these. I dont have any more Orange Manzano seeds so I cant re-sow those.

This is, I think, pretty much everything Im going to sow other than annuums, which I will sow in another week or two. The list has been pruned down a bit since my first post. Now grow, my beauties, grow.
