Natural Born Basterds

This GLOG will be dedicated to some hybrids of interest that have emerged from my pepper garden since 2020. I plan to follow them at least until F3 to see if they are worth it. Please note that no seeds will be shared at this time. Let's grow!

It's a little surprising that every plant (10/10) produces brown fruit at this stage. Some peppers ripen to a very dark (almost chocolate) color, some become lighter brown (sometimes with red hues), while others become even lighter, more caramel in appearance. Most carry a little stinger too. They are quite fruity but also have a notable bitterness. Needless to say, they are hot🔥🔥

DOx F4

Sadly, due to the lack of sunlight reaching this raised bed (the surrounding trees are now too tall), my DOx red and GJMx F3 have not grown much. DOx only started flowering towards the end of the season so I have not harvested any.... At least plants grown from last season black-yellow fruits were a bit more exposed to the sun and gave some fruits. I ended up with one plant producing red fruit, another producing burnt yellow fruit, and the last producing brown fruit.

Even if the brown version is looking less “attractive”, it's the one that will be sown again next year as the total harvest was the highest (almost double the other 2) despite the same poor light conditions. Taste is very good (fruity) on all colors but none reaches the heat level of the red fruits from previous years.

GJMx F3

Somehow the GJMx still managed to produced at least a dozen fruits per plant which was more than enough to collect seeds for the next (4th) generation. Probably due to the lack of light the fruits stayed rather small but again showed good consistency. Vicious heat here that instantly attacks the back of the throat! Plants #6 & 7 produced 2 fruits on most nodes, a trait I hope to see again in F4. I will probably go with seeds from plant #7 for the next round.

This is the plant that produced a branch with variegated foliage. I collected seeds from pods growing on this branch only. I did a viability test and although I am close to a 100% germination rate, no signs of variegation yet. Massive sowings will take place in February, we will see what happens next.

These look incredible IMHO! Their rough skin color is very particular, as if several layers of brown, orange and red were superimposed with blackish spots on the surface. F3 will come from this selection.

I agree @Bou, #7 is a real looker. Nice choice! Do you have any tasting notes? :mouthonfire:
Mainly fruity, with some bitterness (I hope this trait doesn't persist in future generations) but don't have much of that "earthyness" that usually comes with brown peppers. They turned into a very good powder (quite potent too). All I have to do now is think of a sauce recipe to use up the fruits that fill my freezer!
