NeedsWork 2016 - Year Two

Happy New Year!  It's that time!
This year I am focusing on cayenne and white habs as they are our favorites from last year'.  Ground white hab pepper is like a step up from white pepper.  Very versatile.

Most of my pepper seeds are hitting the dirt ~2 months earlier than last year.  March 9th 2015 vs January 1st 2016.  Link to last year's glog.

I moved my grow box out to our  'sun' room.  It's more of a basement, without insulation, 1/2 above ground.  It isn't the most ideal place for growing but it will keep the dirt out of the house.  Temps are my biggest concern as the grow box foam insulation is only 1/4 inch.  Might have to double up...

My grow box is now 5' L x 3' T 18" W.  Step-by-step build instructions are in last year's glog.  Running six T-8 shop bulbs 24 hrs until germination.  Bulbs are arranged:

6000k
6000k
3000k
5000k
6000k
6000k

Also have a heat mat and temp sensor for the germ tray.

Six of nine overwinter plants are showing signs of life despite significant neglect and freezing temps in the sun room.  This is their first day under the lights, and third watering since digging them last fall.
Dragon Cayenne
Carolina Reaper
Carribean Red Habanero
Yellow Ghost
Ghost
??? label MIA, back right, could be Long Cayenne

It's a beast but the temperature probe has to go in the smallest pot or it will cook the little guys.

Tonight I put some dirt in cups.

Hi NW ... good to see all your plants are doing fine ... whats the white stuff on your pots ?

Thanks!

The white stuff is quartz pool filter sand that is aproximatly .25" / 5mm deep.  It helps cut down on mold and other nasties growing on the top of the cup because it dries out quickly.  I borrowed this idea from someone else one here.  Wish I could remember to give credit...

Very cool set up. I've never heard of that technique. Thanks for the tip!

Big thanks to EvanWilliams1988 for the manzano and assorted pubescens!  They will be hitting the germ tray late tonight after a few hours of soaking.

Long red cayenne and dragon cayenne have germed.  Updated first post.  Everyone seems to have made the transition to cups.  Just about all varieties have first leaves starting.  Some are stretching for light so they will be lowered later today.  Tossing around the idea of a tent and HPS system and using the T8's to start flowers in a few months...

What a great setup!

Thanks!  Going to be switching it up soon... just waiting on goodies in the mail.   ;)

Edit:  I've had some of my favorite meals in the SW corner of Connecticut.  Corbo Corner Deli in Greenwhich... hot oil pizza in Stamford... another pizza place in Danbury... Two Roads Brewing Co.  Such a beautiful state and I've only traveled a small corner.

Nothing too crazy today.  Seedlings are a little upset because the cups are still damp from transplant and I can't lower the lights more.

Is it possible to raise the cups since you can't lower the lights?

Nice setup!

Thanks!  If I raise them up then I have to take them off of the heating pad which protects them from the 40F ambient temps when the lights are off.  It's really the overwinters that are preventing me from lowering the lights.  I may have lost a few of them so I might find them a new spot.

Continuing to look good :P

Thanks!

Approaching three weeks from sow date of original germ tray.  I ordered four more varieties to start:

Bahamian Goat
Yellow Cayenne
Biker Billy Jalapeno
Hangijao #5

That should be all of the varieties this year.

Looking better every time, have to started to think about nutes yet? How many more weeks before you feed them ?

Had to google the Hangijao #5, probably one of the neatest stories for a pepper I have heard. I will be following along watching that one for sure.

I'll start running Fox Farm Grow Big at 50% strength as soon as they need water.  They are still drinking from the watering last Friday.      The watering after that will be full strength.  I had good results last year with fish emulsion but the smell and the mess when bottom watering is a no-go for me.

I stumbled on #5 by accident, not exactly sure what to expect.  Hopefully it's tasty!

Looking good NW   ..... i see you got a few with "deformed" leaf.s ... do you cull them later or let them grow?

I'll let them grow if the cotys are deformed.  Most of those are from helmet heads that I either let grow out or removed not so delicately.  First true leaves are usually my determining factor.

Seeds from Buckeye Pepper Company arrived today.  They threw in some free chocolate scorpions.  Starting these tonight in the germ tray:

Bahamian Goat
Yellow Cayenne
Biker Billy Jalapeno
Hangijao #5
Trinidad Scorpion Chocolate

Potting up everyone in the germ tray to solo cups.

A couple more shots of the new setup:
MH is at 750w 18 on 6 off.  1 kw/hr = $0.10 here

One full tray of Cleome, half a tray of Cosmos, 12 cells of Coreopsis and 24 cells of Basil hit the dirt tonight.  That brings the total to five 1020 trays full of dirt.
