NeedsWork 2016 - Year Two

Happy New Year!  It's that time!
This year I am focusing on cayenne and white habs as they are our favorites from last year'.  Ground white hab pepper is like a step up from white pepper.  Very versatile.

Most of my pepper seeds are hitting the dirt ~2 months earlier than last year.  March 9th 2015 vs January 1st 2016.  Link to last year's glog.

I moved my grow box out to our  'sun' room.  It's more of a basement, without insulation, 1/2 above ground.  It isn't the most ideal place for growing but it will keep the dirt out of the house.  Temps are my biggest concern as the grow box foam insulation is only 1/4 inch.  Might have to double up...

My grow box is now 5' L x 3' T 18" W.  Step-by-step build instructions are in last year's glog.  Running six T-8 shop bulbs 24 hrs until germination.  Bulbs are arranged:

6000k
6000k
3000k
5000k
6000k
6000k

Also have a heat mat and temp sensor for the germ tray.

Six of nine overwinter plants are showing signs of life despite significant neglect and freezing temps in the sun room.  This is their first day under the lights, and third watering since digging them last fall.

Tuesday update:

I cut the grass for the first time this year and put some of the marigolds in pots.  The cat decided that he likes cornbread.  I'm trying to think of topics for a video later in the week.  Until then, here is a photo dump:

Carribean Red is flowering which makes me excited.

The Early Jalapenos are all pretty small but randomly decided to start fruiting.  There are probably 10-15 baby jalapenos going.

I pollinated 13 flowers on the over winter Bhut.  It's the only over winter that I didn't kill.  It has two baby ghost peppers on it and probably 20 flowers starting.  I use it to soak up the extra water in the seedling tray.

I'm running the 1000w MH on the superlume setting for the last two months.  Everyone is root bound and starting to flower.  Even the cleome is starting to flower.

For for your grow zone, you're way ahead for sure! Are you dirting it or pots?

For sure monster plants come dirt day!

Thanks!  Dirt for as many as I can fit (~49), then probably a few pots.  My parents always appreciate a few jalapenos and habs.  I also sneak extras in the flower beds before my wife gets home from work.  Last year I managed a huge bush of red habs in our front flower bed.   ;)

I swapped seeds with WhamGenetics and ended up with some super cool late starts.  They will be soaking overnight for the germ tray tomorrow.  Oh and some enchiladas with three crushed yellow morugas.

Just about a month out.  I almost have to water constantly in small amounts.  Too much at once, to last them more than a day, and they start to damp off.  Too little and I have to water every other day.  Ahh!

Friday update:

I ate my first pods.  The Early Jalapeno's aren't quite ripe.  This little pod was like a bitter green bell.  I accidentally knocked off a green Caribbean Red pod so I had to eat that too.  It had the wonderful fruity / floral flavor but hardly any heat.  Finally I picked a purple cayenne.  That little bugger kicked me square in the face.

I've hand pollinated hundreds of flowers and probably have at least a hundred pods started.  Pollen is everywhere so I am going to keep an eye out for any interesting crosses.

You mentioned damping off. Do you bottom water?

I use the wife's old turkey pans and some new ones (shhh don't tell her) and put the potted plants in, and add an inch or so of water. Sometimes with some nutes (hasta gro).

I do this once they are in the solo cups.

Things continue to look great!

I do bottom water using 1020 trays... however my floor isn't level and I don't have my varieties sorted very well.  Next year I need to start less plants.

I came home from vacation  to a tent full of wilted peppers,

A few hours later, all was well.  The stress did cause a few flowers to drop but that could be from overcrowding too.

Finished planting out yesterday.  The cooler temps and the storms had me worried, but the plants are happy as can be.

I picked a few purple cayenne's to make the first fresh powder of the year.  We are dangerously low on garden fresh cayenne pepper since it goes in everything.

I'm leaving the light on for the single Growdown plant... and a bunch of flowers that I'm starting late.

Despite the lack of hardening off followed by a few nights of near freezing temperatures, the overwinter bhut pods are starting to ripen.  This plant is a tank!  It's on track to be the first super with ripe pods, and in the top ~five plants with ripe pods.
