newbie question

Okay. I'm new to growing peppers and this year will be my first. I've heard that you're either supposed to soak the seeds in warm water overnight or keep them in a damp paper towel. Which one of these methods is better?

Skitch...Pam just tried soaking her seeds and planting them and I don't think she was impressed with the results. Want to weigh in on your little experiment Ms. Pam?

I once tried soaking seeds vs. not soaking and found no difference in germination in either time or amount germinated. I basically just plant them in a good seed starting mix, provide moisture (don't over water your soil or your seeds will rot), and warmth (I place mine next to the radiator) and usually germination occurs in 7-14 days (rarely 21+ days).
Good Luck!:)

Depends on the pepper.
Some seeds sprout within 3-5 days, and the stubborn ones (like Naga Morich) take a bit more than a week.

Ahh, good to know, I was thinking of growing Naga this year....so I won't panic if they don't germinate too quickly.

BTW Skitch92--I don't fertilize the seedlings until the first "true leaves" are established...and then only very lightly with a fish emulsion spray (smells bad, works good)

How to grow chillis.

Eat 6 small tubs of yoghurt.
Put cheap potting soil into the tubs of yoghurt.
Push a little depression in the top and drop a seed in.
Water every 2-3 days and leave on your front verandah.
After 5-7 days you will have seedlings let them grow for 2-3 weeks then transplant into a bigger pot-suggest 25-30cm.
Water regularly for 3-4 months. Also use a soil booster once a month. You will end up with chillis you can eat. After eating the chillis eat some yoghurt :P

I saked some Naga Morich for 48 hrs and 2 days later I was a proud dad, for me it made a huge difference. With other varieties I have found there to be minimal results in favour of soaking bulgarian carrot being an example unsoaked germinated 1 day earlier.

Scorp 'hot in hot out'

Soaked mine in weak Chamomille tea... before putting them in rock wool I had germination in 80% of my seeds in 3-5 days -- some stubborn seeds took 10 --- My first time trying this method. The tannins are supposed to healp stimulate the growth cycle of viable seed helps too

Well, having just soaked mine in Superthrive and water, and having them germinate in about the same amount of time as the ones not soaked, I'm still underwhelmed with pre-soaking.

How long did you soak yours in the tea?

I always put my seeds (all seeds, not just peppers) inbetween two layers of wet paper towel and thats inbetween two little plates or pot bottoms then i put that all on the furnace cuz its nice and warm, I used to have lousy germination rates just dumping them in soil but this worksgreat and is super quick.
once i see a little root sticking out (ussually 1-10 days, depending) then i pop it into soil and it comes up super quick. so far this has only not worked for one pepper variety i'm growing this year and thats a wild one i got from peppermania, so i'm trying that chamomile tea trick with the last of the seeds but when they were in the tea they were all floating and i've heard floaters aren't viable.

:P

This is exactly what I do but I use the tiny Fromais Frais pots. As for soaking the seeds I've heard a lot of people say it dosen't seem to make any difference to germination rates so why bother.

Sorry Pam I didnt get back...
I let them soak over night apparently Chamomille is the tea of choice. I made a cup of strong tea using a tea bag then another cup with the same bag to make the weak tea thenI put my seeds in. I happened to have several prescription bottles around so I used those with the tea solution and labled them.

I haven't had too much luck with seeds germinating this year. I've done germination tests before where you put your seeds between two bits of damp paper towel and nearly all have germinated. Do you think I could try and germinate them this way then put them into soil?

the whole logic behind the pre-soaking is to somehow weaken the hull, i've never heard anything regarding breaking dormancy (the warmth and wetness do that fine..)

Thats what i always do and all my seeds sprout in a timely fashion, but i doubt it makes so much of a difference as opposed to keeping them in equally damp soil, mostly it just calms my anal retentive need to know exactly whats going on. which is a good enough reason for me to keep doing it this way...
