contest Oktoberfest Throwdown

Just bought a 6-pak of Leinenhugel's Oktoberfest tradiditonal Germand style Marzen Bier to test and it didn't go over well. The review was "it sucked"-

That's too bad - I enjoyed their summer shandy. If you try any of the ones I've listed, you'll have to let me know how the Leinenkugel compared to them. So far I've been able to find single bottles (avoiding buying a 6-pack of a beer I won't drink.) My son is headed out to The Cave - thinks he can pick up some other singles there for me. That's one good thing about having older kids - let them do the legwork!

I also stopped by the FM tonight. They only had non-alcoholic beers from Germany, though they do have a variety of German-style beers with alcohol (though only in 6-packs.) Seemed kind of odd to me.

That aside, depending upon what my son brings home tonight, think I'll head out to some bars for more taste-testing this weekend.

Paulky, it's 6 AM somewhere. I'm gonna check out TBs hippie mkt, Whole Foods, all they sell is expensive beer and have a nice selection, I can't get keystone there so I don't go. Also think they may have a couple of the ingredients I'm looking for in the meat mkt.

Beer for breakfast....I wasn't kidding! Already have recipes for beer omelets, beer pancakes and beer crepes! Looking for a beer syrup recipe.

brb~

Beer syrup? I'd make a porter reduction with turbinado sugar and then mix it with maple syrup.

Hell, just pour the beer on, there's your syrup. THP your recipie sounds interesting. Ignorant question, what's turbinado sugar?

I was thinking the recipe I use for the rum syrup that goes onto my rum cake might work. That's 1/2 cup of rum, a stick of butter, and a cup of sugar. Of course, I mean substitute beer for the rum. (I just used granulated sugar, not turbinado. Note on the turbinado question - it's brown sugar, typically with large crystals, of which Sugar In The Raw is a variety. What is usually sold here as "brown sugar" isn't really considered turbinado.)

Oh man practice did not go well, Going to hit the Bundy Rum and have another crack at it.
That's too bad. I have read that cooking with beer can be challenging, especially since the beer contents can vary so wildly (ie - some have yeast, some don't, some are more malty, some more hopsy....) All these factors alter the sugar content, amongst other things. I'd suggest doing some searches on "cooking with beer" - I've found some pretty good articles this way.

That is SO TRUE Geeme! Cooking with beer is VERY challenging!

If you don't know what the alcohol content is then how is one to judge how many brews to consume during prep and how many are to be reserved for the main entree? And if you TOTALLY SCREW UP snd don't save enough beer to consume during dessert....well, that's just a total fail.

But if you predict to consume 5 beers at Bud55 levels and then hit the microbrews at 5.6% early in the evening, once again...in trouble....

Or if a person is counting on the 5.6% for the outlaws..... I MEAN!!!!....IN_LAWS and they only get .55%Bud........well, there again,..... TROUBLE!

Cooking with beer, or any other alcoholic beverage is a delicate balance. If you don't drink enough, you will tell them what you really think of them. And if you don't serve enough, they may tell you what they think of the food.

I agree, cooking with beer can be a bit of a problem. That's why I prefer to use wine. A consistent 11-13.5%, little margin for error for the alcohol effect...outlaws don't drink it...more for me.....

:D:biggrin:

Exactly!

Wine and Mich Ultra Cactus Lime are pretty much my speed these days. I work too many hours to do otherwise...... {SIGH}! It's been fun, though, checking out these German brews. And speaking of *FAIL*, my "darling" son tells me he picked up a couple bottles for me at The Cave last night - and left them in his friend's car! Anyone up for placing bets as to whether I even get to see them before the weekend is over??? Looks like I'll be making my own trip over there.

We're using this TD as an excuse to buy and try microbrews. As for those left in the car....you probably are out of luck for taste testing those. :( !

Okay. You guys did it. You really did it this time. I am NOT RESPONSIBLE for the idea that came into my head tonight!!!! You take someone like innocent little me, who is a hybrid cross between an intellectual and a creative, add some BAD INFLUENCE (read: WICKED influence), and BAM! things get all twisted up. :hell:

More to come..... let's just call it OctoberFEIST!

EDIT: Okay, okay, working too many hours and not getting enough sleep just might have had some influence.
