P. Dreadie Memorial Group Grow 2016

Long-time THP veterans mourned the loss last August of Amarillo, Texas musician/songwriter/silversmith/chilehead Erin Mason, known to us here on the boards as P. Dreadie. Erin was an enigma, one of the most interesting and creative, yet gentle and loving guys I ever knew. Many of us may be unaware that he played harmonica in one of the original Austin, Texas bands of the early 1970s "Cosmic Cowboy" era, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys. When Erin decided to step off of Alvin's perpetually-touring bus and return to Amarillo, he travelled to Jamaica, fell in love with the Reggae beat, collected the best Scotch Bonnet fruit he could find, and his alter-ego Papa Dreadie was born.

In 2013 Erin sent me a few pods of the Scotch Bonnets he had been breeding, carefully selected descendants of the original fruit he brought back from the Caribbean all those years ago. I harvested every single seed from those pods, and stored them away, as I focused increasing attention on other varieties. When his wife Liz gave us the news last August that Erin had passed, I knew what I had to do with those seeds: a community grow in his memory. I have already shared about half of them, and I will continue to share them with experienced growers of the Scotch Bonnet until they are gone.

Couple more Dreadies. Got a nice one for seeds too. Gunna whip up a TFM/Dreadie/Scotch Brain hot sauce today. Probably add a tiny bit of a yellow rocoto too for more sweetness.

On a side note it looks like 1 Dreadie plant is actually a TFM. Every single pod looks exactly like a TFM. Need to check the label i stuck in the pot. It might have been right all along.

Everyone has such great looking pods. I got inspired by this thread, I ordered p dreadie seeds from refining fire for my 2020 grow. I'm not sure they are the authentic ones, but best I could do.

I recently whipped up one of my favorite sauces, with some fresh picked P. Dreadies from my garden. This stuff is so ridiculously good with chicken/pork/seafood. Trini style pepper sauce, where the scotch bonnets really shine.

that's a great looking sauce!

ive only had one dreadie so far and had to share it with a greedy bug. lol  hoping they start producing soon.

My first of two papa dreadies is finally ripening! I haven' had much luck with the scotch bonnets this season. Maybe it's a good thing that I didn't do a bonnet only season like I initially intended to...

Today I tasted the ripe papa dreadie. Taste was delicious and very different from what I usually expect from a chinense. It was very citrusy and it's actually the first time that I experience a citrus flavour in a chilli.
At first instance there didn't seem to be much heat but that changed after a minute or two! [emoji16] Heat was serious for someone like me who isn't used to this kind of heat, but it's more pleasant than a typical hot annuum.
Now I still have another - larger - dreadie on my plant but that one's still green. I wonder how that one is going to be heat wise [emoji846]

My Dreadies are predominately off-pheno, perhaps due to funky rain amounts and zone 3.....

This one has but one lobe, but it spirals like a turd emoji

I have a couple quarter-sized ripe ones too embarrassing to post.

I'm overwintering this one, hoping for a different result next year....
