No grow log for the 2018 season other than the Pimenta de Neyde x Bonda Ma Jacques
thread dedicated to Trippa's cross. That one is an ongoing community project going into
second year and a test of the F7 generation. I imagine I will mention it once-in-a-while in
this thread, but the details of its progress will be in the dedicated thread.

I am deciding on a grow list for the 2019 season after growing only Trippa's cross this
season (2018). I definitely have some old favorites that will comprise the great majority
of the grow. I have limited space, so I'm counting on nature to help me make the final
decision. I'll probably start lots of seeds since I'm gun-shy from the poor germination
rates the past couple of seasons.

Here's the pool. Would be nice to be able to grow a bunch of all of them!  I think my
neighbor will shelter the overflow in his yard, but we'll see what to plant and how many
based on what might germinate

c. chinese - 10 varieties
  • PdN x BMJ, F7, white and violet varieties, Trippa's cross
  • Fatali, F2 of seed from Pepper Joe's
  • 7 Pot Burgundy, brown phenotype, pecan shape from 2017 F2 of the 7PB from Windchicken
  • Scotch Bonnet, MoA, F2 of seeds from John/Sim, not high production, but some nice pods
  • JA Red Habanero, F5 of seed from Walk Good/Devv
  • Yellow Scorpion, F7 aka Yellow Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and CARDI Scorpion, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Red, F4, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Chocolate, F3 of seed from Georgia Growhead
  • Bhut Jolokia, hybrid, F2 - I believe it is a  (BJred) x (Pdn x BMJ F1 or F2)
  • Yellow 7 Pot, F2 of seed from Trippa 2013
c. annuum - 4 varieties:
  • JA Red Mushroom, F3, brown phenotype, seed from Refining Fire
  • Pimenta de Padron - Spanish seed, fry up while small and green, throw on some salt
  • Pimenta del Piquillo - Spanish seed, sweet, very flavorful, small stuffers
  • Guindilla - Spanish seed, spicy heat, great pickled, long and skinny
c. frutescens - 2 varieties:
  • Nagahari from Tezpur, India, supposedly very, very hot freebie from Pepper Joe's 2017
  • Chili Costa Rica, F2 (2014) from Hippy Seed Company seed, 2012
c. pubescens - 1 variety:
  • Red Rocoto, F3 of Peruvian Market seed, 2016
That about does it. Seeding time will be here before we know it!

Could this be a page topper?
Oh yeah. Thanks for the assist, Shane

Thanks for the tip. I plan on soaking my seeds
over nite, so hopefully that will help with the
seed jacket issues.

That's about as many steps as I can manage  :seeya:

Here's what I'm using with my rock wool cubes.
Originally for Jiffy Pellets. I figure the wells will
hold the excess water below the cubes so they
can keep their feet dry.

I have 4 trays with domes for a total of 28 cubes
for the c. chinense first round. Going to try to put
three seeds per cube if I have that many.

Do you rinse and flush the cubes to adjust for residual alkalinity?
According to the directions, just soak 10-15 seconds (Grodan directions)
in pH adjusted water (5.5-6.5), let drain and put on a surface that keeps
them out of the residual water that drips out. Grodan says leave the sleeve
on until transplanting into soil or other media.

I looked at a gob of rockwool how-to videos and directions. They all
basically say the same thing.

Cool. What that's pretty much consistent with what I've read - that a short soak (didn't mean to type "rinse") and flush is all that's needed to remove the residual lime from the production process. I've seen 30 minutes recommended, but not an extended soak.  I haven't done a lot with non-soil growing methods in the past, but I'm thinking to give rockwool germination another go.  Hopefully it goes well for you and I learn a little more in the process.

Good luck!

I ordered in a 72 pellet tray (with pellets) from Lowes last month for $7.97 delivered. Free shipping since I have a Lowes account.

I haven't used the tray yet but it's pretty decent for not too floppity. I have some old 25 pellet trays I've been using for germination on a mat.

Thanks, CD. I'll probably treat them like jiffy plugs or
seedling mix plugs and transplant into beverage cups
as soon as the cotys are green.

You can learn from my mistakes

Nice , I've never used those .
Maybe I should. ;)
I figure it's worth a try, Jacques  :scared:

Someone used them in their glog last year, had great results, my memory is horrible though.
I've seen them on the forum quite often.
A lot of people use them,

Will the 72-cell tray fit on the mat?

All the very best Paul for your 2019 grow I will be following your glog closely
Thanks, John. Keep an eye out for the 2nd generation
MoA from your seed

Good luck buddy...thinks still aren't popping over here. Temps are good, just old seeds...still hopeful that they may wake up.

Hope to see some hooks from you soon. Ditto, brother!
Pullin' for ya Shane  I'm a little trepidatious myself,
although most of my seeds are not as old as some
of yours.  I'm hoping the rock wool does the trick
for me this season.  We'll know by mid-January!

The base of the tray is 19x9". My heat mat is probably an non-standard size being a repurposed water bed heater. It's 34x13½".

So you might get the big one and 2 x 25-cell
on the mat in a pinch. When you expand your
grow, that is  :D

Once again, I learn the lesson of patience. The
second seed in one of my Red Rocoto germinated
after 24 days that makes it 4/4 for both the Red
Rocoto and the Aji Amarillo from the AeroGarden:

I think I will start my seeds sometime right after
Christmas so I have at least a few days extra to
try to restart or replace any that don't germinate.

Are you gonna move that little bugger out of there and replant it elsewhere?

I did a count today. I have 64 definite plants and 16 more in the "most likely" category. Every cup/pellet has sprouted at least one of the 3-4 seeds. I need to start another tray soon to make my hundred start quota.

Wow, that is a full-on grow DW! Sounds
like a good first round.

I will probably let the 2nd Rocoto and Aji
seedlings get a set of true leaves, then
just root them in water as cuttings just for
fun. If they take, I will probably plant them
and give them away.

I almost fried 20. Never used a LED array before and hung the light at about 8" above since this setup is in a colderarea. Seemed like a smart move at the time since the light is so cool. Now I have some bleached out and otherwise discolored leaves. I pulled the light up to about 2' when I added new plants. I think they'll be okay
