Peter's 2015 Glog

I've started germinating a few seeds for 2015. I'm using the wet paper towel in sandwich bag method for the first time. For each seed type, I soaked the seeds in 3% hydrogen peroxide for one minute, then rinsed before putting on the paper towel. I've got all the bags in a plastic box, sitting on a germination heat mat. I put a half plastic egg carton on the bottom so they won't get too hot.

It looks like a few of the seeds have something white poking out. These are ajijoes Chocolate Hand Grenade Habanero and Pepperlover's Mustard Moruga Scorpion.

I started them on 12/19. I'm going to move any germinated seeds to cups containing Fox Farms Light Warrior. This will be the first time using this as well.

Long overdue update. Here're some harvest pics. I'll try to get some pics/video of my plants soon before it gets cold. They are doing really well. The drip system saved me this year, as I had to make a few trips out of town unexpectedly in August/September. Need to decide which ones to overwinter. I attempted some ghetto cloning (see below), with a few cuttings. It's on a seedling heat mat and has another clear container on top to keep humidity in. I take it off for a while ever day to air out. That's an older pic, some are doing better than others. If I can get the stuff I need in time, I'll attempt a hydro setup for new clones. The current ghetto soil-less mix consists of MG seed starter, compost manure, worm castings, perlite and some michorizahe. I used a sterile razor and trimmed 1/8" below the node at a 45 deg. angle, then dipped in honey. I don't have any root hormone, on the list though.

Not Reapers. Looks like these might have been crossed with Paper Lantern? Hugely prolific. Nice flavor and heat. Not reaper hot, but up there. This is the third harvest off of same plant, and there are more ripening. I saved some seeds, although not isolated, might get lucky. Also trying to clone.

Killer pods Peter! Plants certainly doing well - goes without saying (just look and see!)... some of the nicest A+ quality pods right there! I think we have a bit more warmth down here for a bit longer this season, you'll get the chill before we do. It's going to be in the 80's for a few days... or so has been forecast. Had the air cond. on past 2 days..lol..

Glad to see the residual effects of the hurricane didn't mess with/affect your plants. Thankfully here in the upstate area we were spared the worst - got only about a week of continual on/off again rain storms and COLD, dark, and dreary days. (started to get depressing  :mope: )

Congrats on the beautiful harvests, 'Gentle Beast'! I foresee more amazing creative jams being concocted! You certainly have some heat for wintry days!

Joel,
Thanks for the kind words. We're supposed to get some low thirties temps in the next few days. Will probably cover the ones I want to overwinter, or get cuttings from, with heavy trash bags. That should get them through until it gets really cold.

Hey, awesome pod and plant pics.

How'd the pineapple rocoto and tekne dolmasi end up tasting?
They were both good, the Pineapple Rocoto wasn't as big a producer as my Ecuadorian Red, but the flavor was nice. It actually did have a pineapply smell/flavor. Heat was low to medium. The Tekne Dolmasi was great. We used it lot in cooking, no heat, but very sweet. Much sweeter than bell pepper. It goes really well in omelets.

End of season update: Frost killed most of my outdoor peppers last week. I did bring in six to overwinter before that. Still cleaning up my containers, need to get all the drip system stuff together and brought inside too before it gets really cold.

I just purchased a 400 watt Ceramic Metal Halide light, from htgsupply. Plans are to setup a small DWC system. Currently, just have two cloned Large Orange Thai's and a Ghetto Kratky hydroponic setup with some Kale seeds planted. Planning to grow some lettuce and spinach too. Also, moved my Bahamian Goat OW over there.

Have been working on list for next year's grow. I think I'm going to move up from the 3 gal. nursery pots to 10 gal. grow bags, and a few 15+ gal nursery pots if I can find some cheap/free.

nice shelf. i built some custom wood ones but want to expand and think i might get a few of those chrome shelves instead, if you get the 2ft x 4ft should fit 4 trays on each shelf. they are pretty cheap on ebay.

have you used it much? do you like it?

It's the same shelf I used for my seedlings earlier this year, will need another now for next years starts. I love the shelf, got it at Lowes. http://www.lowes.com/pd_71034-80752-184874C-DS_0__?productId=3473479

List price is 74, but I think mine was on sale for 55 or 60.

So I've been experimenting with attempts to clone some of my plants from cuttings. First off, I can say using a tote for an aero-cloner is a terrible idea. It will leak like crazy. Mine didn't produce roots after running it for 14 days. I'm using this pump with these sprayers. FYI, If you use these, the pre-drill bit size is 5/32" and tap size is 10-32. I used a Lowes brand 18 gal. tote. The spray manifold fit within a few inches of the perimeter, had probably 16 or 18 sprayers. Also, had it on a repeat cycle timer 1 min on, 5 off. To fix the leaks I tried using weather stripping inside the lid, and ratchet strapped it tight. That helped, but ended up having to just put in it a larger tote to catch the drips. I used 2" net pots with neoprene inserts. The second thing I learned is don't use a 2" hole saw for 2" net pots. Use a hole saw slightly smaller. I ended up having to build a shoulder around my net pots with aluminum foil.

I saw this post the other day and was enlightened. I built one today and started using it. The manifold for this one has only 6 sprayers. Hoping maybe that'll produce a finer mist? I cut the bottoms of the net pots off too, to expose the stems better. The lid snaps on tight and doesn't leak. I also stopped using the lights. I read somewhere else that you don't need them at this point. I don't know if it's true, but they weren't helping with the tote. There were a few cuttings I didn't have room for in the new setup. They are in rapid rooters in a sealed ziploc.

Some pics of the crappy tote version.

This maybe should go in a 2016 glog, or winter projects or something, but wanted to show the progress of my overwinters since going under the 400 watt CMH.

The overwinters got aphids so I went the nuclear option, pruned the hell out of them, including roots, rinsed several times, soaked in soapy water, rinsed again put in fresh potting mix and clean pots. These are, left to right, top to bottom: Rennie Chocolate, Devil's Heart, Peach Bhut and Bahamian Goat.
