pics Phil's Pepper Pics (2011)

Hi! I will be chronicling my pepper plants throughout the season, it has been a very long cold spring in CA so they are just getting rolling.
I have pods on a couple of the early ones. I was far too busy with school to deal with seeds, so these are all starters from local nurseries.

My list consists of:
Hot Cherry
Cajun Belle
Manzano 'Amarillo'
Ethiopian Brown Berbere
Caribbean Red
Jamaican Hot Chocolate
Chiltepin
Thai Dragon
Thai Hot 'Giant Red'
Thai Ornamental
Cayenne 'Long Slim'
Aleppo
Hungarian Hot Wax
Poblano
Big Jim
Fresno
Anaheim
Serrano
Jalapeno (Jumbo, regular, and 'ixtapa')
Chili de Arbol

I top-pruned a number of the peppers to experiment so take note of that if you are interested in seeing the results (which vary greatly from plant to plant).

Here are a few pics to get it started

This Ornamental suffered a rough drought stress with a recent 5-1-1 watering mistake, but it has bounced back to full. Aleppo on the right.

Due to this long cold spring, my container peppers are forging ahead, probably because their roots can warm up more quickly with the sun.
I will be faced with the challenge of keeping the potted ones alive through the hot summer fairly soon, but they are superior up to now. It will be
interesting to see which plants are more successful throughout the entire season, basically two seasons here in central CA.

More to come.

Here are a few more. This Fresno was top pruned a few weeks ago and look at the bushy growth!!

Manzano Amarillo starting to get somewhere. Hope these hold up to the hot weather I really want to try them.

Noticed pods on the Fresno today.

Thanks for the advice on the pubescens, Millworkman. I will do that as soon as the weather heats up. For now it is probably perfect for them, 75 in the day 50 at night. I was thinking of investing in shade cloth and jerry rigging a structure for them.

This pepper was sold as a Thai Dragon, but I do not think they have purple stems? There is even purple on the flowers.

Could it be reaction to a lack of sun? That is the only option considering this spring. The purple in the flowers look genetic to me, each one has purple blotches in similar places.

If its in the flowers like it is then it is most likely not a reaction and is genetic. You might have some new fun cross. Where did the seeds come from?

Pepper-Guru, I am finding that out! Against most advice, I topped about half of my plants to try it. Thus far they are forging way ahead of the unpruned peppers!
I also did it to help them deal with the heat, they will have an advantage in shading their stems/fruit/soil when the weather really heats up. 95+ is a gaurantee.

More amateur teen pepper porn to come.

Tell me about it! Up until recently there were still people under the impression that peppers were annuals...lol  Never be afraid to experiment. Its how you end up having pepper trees

Here is the entrance to my patio, inside are all my peppers in the ground and you can see the potted ones. Pretty impressive use of a crappy apartment patio!!

Rover, on garden guard duty. Sleep in the dirt duty now that he's old and lazy.

Crappy pic of the Big Jim, this things roots have pretty much occupied the entire 10 gallon pot already. First flower is visible!

Thai Ornamental peppers beginning to blush.

Cajun Belles getting fat and tasty looking!

Fresno pods getting beefy, looking forward to these soon!

Pair of Manzano 'amarillo' really starting to take off, I noticed the larger one started about 3 new growth points from the base that already have multiple sets of leaves, these grow FAST.

Mystery Pepper! Supposed Thai Dragon, but i doubt it judging by the size and pendant style buds.

Thanks Kevin, they are finally starting to look like pepper plants because the weather warmed up. In fact it jumped to 93 from a day at 75 and I saw some fruit and blossoms drop. Still, I am happy to see them growing.

I noticed that too... one of my Rocoto plants is about a foot tall and it only took a couple weeks for its side growth to catch up to the main stem.

Great looking plants on the whole.

Just a couple quickies this morning before the sun got too hot.

Mystery pepper pod.

Aleppo flower!

Anyone know what these blotches are on a couple Manzano leaves? I foliar fed yesterday if that could be the cause.
