PIC 1's............Pod-ography.............2013

Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

IMG_1796.jpg

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

IMG_1763.jpg

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

Lookin' good Greg!

I can't believe you still have tomatoes going, but after all we are on a different schedule.

Can't wait to try out the cheese recipe.

Nice score from JAG!

Have a great week!

Thank you so much Greg! Went by PO on way home this evening and YAY!!!

For most part, exception yellow 7 (THSC), and white fatalii, "The Jamaican Collection:"

Again, thank you so much, Greg! Got some special seeds (BOC) headed to you tomorrow! Again, thank you so, so much!!

Still looking awesome Greg! I read where you are trimming back to help production of the pods that are already formed. I have been thinking about that, but I'm weighing that against the time it would take and how those top branches will protect the plant during a light frost. So I'm not sure. Do you have any thoughts on if that cuts back on frost protection?

Thanks Scott,
The tomatoes are still going strong. We're happening a great Autumn and the forecast for the for the next 10 days looks exceptional.
Although we're about to head to N'Awlin's for a week of "Pub and Grub"...I bet it's still pretty steamy there.

Devan
You're wwlcome...
Devan that's a good idea to plant a few, at least. You'll probably end up with all kinds of shapes of pods. Good luck with next season.

Hey Andy,
If and when a light frost is forecasted you may want to strip the pods from the plants. Cutting back the grow will excelerate the ripening process but it has its limitation when it comes to......frost.
We get an occasional "Fog Frost" that can happen early in November. The pods on the lower parts of the plants seem unaffected since they're closer to the ground warmth. It's a different situation where I'm located. Although I'm still located about 8 miles from Lake Michigan the (inland) temperatures stay warmer than about 20+ miles away in the rural areas almost about 15 degrees difference. I have two sisters with gardens west of me, one lives 15 miles away the other 65. They're gardens shut down a few weeks earlier then mine. I do have one other advantage, wind shelter from the fencing, houses and garages that perimeter the crop....no nasty wind tunnels.

Between this weekend at my sons college, moving my daughter and fianche out of my house early next week, prep for the Chicago marathon at work (pia) and leaving on vacation for a week my garden will be on auto pilot.......I hope to have some harvest shots in 2 weeks if it hasn't corked off cause lack of attention......lol
Andy, thanks for checking this out. I hope you're getting the same weather as we are having.

Thanks Greg, that makes sense. We are having great weather right now, and no frost on the 10 day forecast yet. Have a good time on your vacation!

Jeez Greg I'm ashamed of myself for not checking in more often. Temps are really varying around here eh? Beautiful pods and plants as always man, I would bow down to you if you stood before me oh mighty pepper god!

I see some quality seeds from the master.... This year Greg you have impressed alot of us with your skills as not only a chef in the kitchen but as a master at gardening... My hats off to you Greg, heres to many more surprises that you throw at us...

We're downwind of you Greg, so I hope you have warm weather for at least a couple of weeks... ;)  Things sure are speeding up as winter approaches, eh? Have fun on your vacation, 'cause it'll be nose to the grindstone when you get back... Cheers!

I'm still around...............but not as often................

As the season comes to a screaching halt........here's some final garden shots...

Just got back from vacation by the way...Here's a shot from the bedroom window. We hit the low 40's this weekend and the plants looked a bit shocked. Sunday morning I had a chance to harvest all the ripe pods. There's still many half ripened and a whole bunch of green pods that will either get pickled, chutney'ed or stuck in gallon bottles with vinegar to age...

Some Kung Pao's hanging in there. I've been chopping so many of these up lately...pretty soon they'll be in my oat meal..... :liar:

Hawaiian Pele, ....these have taken along time to ripen, but I like them. Very little seeds. You can munch on the better half of them with very little seedy crunch.

St Martin Reds...........plenty of green pods to back these up

Dominican Reds...........how do they taste ? The usual red Hab flav, moderate heat

Zanadoria's.......this plant just keeps on giving. The ripened color is orange.

The top of some Orange Primos.....most of mine turned out yellow and have Scorp like features

Flowers are still opening on the "Bird Dungs"

Mata Frade....this plant is huge............width-wise.

bump...thanks

USBC...........hot as hell

Datils and Mourga Reds

I just call these heavy producers "Thai-Town Birds'. I bought some seeds in an Asian grocery store but the packs weren't in English.

Another crazy looking Bird............this was suppose to be something else. I still don't know what the heck these are ???

A couple of Reapers.....these are from the 2nd wave............as in try it again, and I did..........not sure if I'm growing these next yr. Plenty hot, just don't care for the taste.

Alot of Bahamian Goats on the plants.........but they're all green..........dang

not a super hot but they've been super producers and keep pumpimg out....."Hungarian Wax"   Choped a few up for the salad tonight.

Jack Frost is stopping by this weekend.........so off come the tomatoes..

told ya...........decent amount of ripe tomatoes to close out the season. The round green unripe will get the "Fried Green Tomato" treatment while the plum tomatoes will find there way into a Chutney or Pickle.

more to show.....

ok, back to some pepper shots...

Aha...."Land of the Giants"...perhaps?  Not quite, just a small bottle of vodka, a couple of peppers and some miniture "Spoon Tomatoes"

Here's my miniture Thai plant. I'm thinking on bringing this one in. Although no overwintering of any other plants this yr. We had a nuisance of white flies lately with the mild weather. Usually they're around in the spring, haven't seen any then up until now. They're a bitch to get rid off indoors,,and I have plenty of house plants they'd move in on.

speaking of Thai....here's one of a few different Thai Basils that are still growing. I don't bother cutting of the bolted flowers as the Thai leaves are thicker than the typical Italian varieties and will not beacome bitter either way. There's nothin better than a Thai Basil Fried Rice dish at home...especially when you have the ingredients right in the backyard.

The back garden before the harvest...........not looking too shabby since I've neglected much of it the last 2 weeks.

Here's some Jamaican Red Habs along with some Aji Venezolano's that I used in an  Empanada appetizer  in the cooking section.

Lookie how big this JA Hab is close to a tennis ball size.................it's a seed keeper !

There's always a branch casuality later in the season. This happens to be a MoA Bonnet........right after the photo I munched on the pepper. ....nothin go's to waste.

The final harvest............with the exception to a few stragglers and many green to pick later..soon..maybe tomorrow.....ha

Back to some sauce making.....here's some ingredients for a small batch.........a "Witch's Brew"....?    More like a " Drunk'en Pumpkin"...

to be continued...........next week...

Very nice Greg... Your end-of-season harvest pics have me drooling! The Thai-Town Bird chiles look like Prik Kee Nu. My Aunt by marriage is from Singapore, and she wants me to grow some next season. If you don't mind my asking... what was your experience with growing them like? Cheers!

Thanks Rick..I had to make way in the fridge with the pods. No time for any processing this week, another weekend of having company over. Hmmm.............I guess I could have left the pods in the coller garage in burlap bags. ...Ha, always an after thought.

I'll have to take a look at the seed pack or online at the Prik Kee Nu.
1st yr growing, typical sparse upward growth. The chili's are small and very narrow (typical of some Thai). As far as the taste, nice bit of heat but it seems like the seed bundle carries all the way to the tip of the chili. A very gritty kind of chew. These will be best dried or perhaps used green in a rice dish or fry.

Hey Ramon,
Where did the season go ? I'm alittle bummed its nearing the end, but when the cleanups over I'll be happy to have more time for other projects.

I have to revamp my grow area for next season. It will be a later start with longer intense light cycles. I'm hoping to cut down on the indoor soil mediums. At one point I counted over 40 bags /1 cu' of Promix in my garage not counting numerous bags of Fafards Metro and Happy Frog. My goal is to get a good 300+ seedlings up and running in the star inserts and transplant those into 1 gal containers in stages right before the hardening off phase. That will produce plants that will thrive without being rootbound. Similar like the way I use to do it before I increased the totals of all the vege startups.

Aha, no "Kung... POW" in the oats but I have mixed pure maple powder with pepper powder in a bowl of oatmeal with banana's.

Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks Scott,
I wish the plants were perennials in my Zone. I'd love to leave them be. A few weekends of cleanup with all the plants.....flowers included and then I can sit back and plan for next yr. I'm looking forward to putting the garden hose(s) away.
Thanks for your support here.
