PIC 1's............Pod-ography.............2013

Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

ok, back to some pepper shots...

Aha...."Land of the Giants"...perhaps?  Not quite, just a small bottle of vodka, a couple of peppers and some miniture "Spoon Tomatoes"

There's always a branch casuality later in the season. This happens to be a MoA Bonnet........right after the photo I munched on the pepper. ....nothin go's to waste.

The final harvest............with the exception to a few stragglers and many green to pick later..soon..maybe tomorrow.....ha
Really liked that "land of the giants" shot - very nice.

And that final harvest  wow.

Gee, I had to paddle up stream to find my glog...page 3............ :D

What can I say, its a bit depressing the seasons come to an end........and being a yr older next yr the season will go by even faster.....right ?

Here's some hodge podge photos of whats left...

Here's the final harvest. The day before the frost set in. I picked the semi ripe and the green the size of a quarter or bigger pods. Not as much as I expected an over flowing 5 gal bucket. Many pods were left on.....and some were missed.

This shot was taken after work today, I guess I missed these and a few other plants. Although the plant is dead the pods remain firm and intact !
More heat for the peppered vinegar.

A Maui Purple, planning to strip the pods and sun/air dry. The weathers cooperating this week .and if it doesn't these will hit the dehydrator trays.

a couple of non pepper shots coming up...
This Italian Parsley is a fighter, another shot taken today. As much as I cut the tips off for the kitchen herbage........the more it bounces back.
It sits in a container sheltered from the harsh winds.

This photo was taken last Friday the day before tyhe 26 deg temps. These are Coleus..some of you grow them or are fimilar with them. They are very tempermental with the cold. I always take cuttings for the following year and may buy a new variety when available. I just wasn't in the mood to clip any shoots off but when I walked past them I thought to my self , what am I getting lazy............  So I grabbed the snips and the plastic cups and went to it.

and I'm glad to have brought these cuttings in, cause the next day they would have been dead. I will move these under the lights when I rebuild my grow areas. Right now its just a pile of lumber in the garge....... :banghead:
These cuttings will produce more branching after potting to soil. I can easily get 200+ 4" container plants by May. Bottom line is if you snooze you lose, and nobody likes that.    ...Speaking of THAT !

I see most of you grow or acquire peppers to use in your meals. Raw is cool but adding heat to the heat is where its at, at least in my kitchen.
There's been some crafty and savy dishes plated up within the glogs, I know cause I look for them. The idea's keep getting better. Keep posting the great shots folks !
Anyways there was a " Wing " challange in the cooking forum this past week. The theme was "Asian Wings". I was one of 5 entries. I picked India for my country. These are my ingredients for the main, sides and condiments...very layered. The voting is going on now in the cooking section. Check it out especially those who spend many hrs in the kitchen...view the couple pages of prep shots. you may find the whole process interesting..thanks for the look, ya never know when a grower needs a vote........ ;)

I'll stop back occasionally with some random pepper processing photos or othe pepper related info.
Thanks for the support this season......it made this run smooth !

Great season Greg! It is always a pleasure checking in here. The updates always are funny and educational.

I am glad you kept the coleus, you have a great collection! I was only able to save 3 of mine, they don't dig the cold at all! I still have a few pepper plants that have had 3 frosts and are giggling.

Wing challenge hmmm...will have to check that one out! Sad to see you close your garden...now all you have is the Better Home...Ha! I am certain you have some sort of cool weather plants still kicking around your pad...

Thanks for the ride this season brother...you're THE master my friend!

Awesome season Greg, I’m sad to see it end for you, this is why I said way back when that Florida needs you for retirement. Although you might miss the break from growing as non stop gets to be a PITA sometimes.

Your non’s look great … you got my vote for your Asian Wings :)

Tip: edit post and add a link ...

Hey guys vote for the best one, don't just vote for PIC 1 because he is campaigning. This isn't one of those Internet situations where one member is from THP, they ALL are, so please be fair, thanks!

:)

Mentioning because a member was upset. I have faith in you guys, and that you're voting for the best. Carry on.

This was the worst time for a friend to call me. I had my hands in the stickiest "poolish" starter, making pizza dough(s) for the weekend....lol

Apparently there was some type of comment made about me directing folks to check out the wing challange..Most of you have followered my glog this season and you all know I add food shots within the glog.........all peppers grown out of my garden. Same with the wing challange....Dundicuts, Sanaams, Chocolate Bhuts and 3 types of Naga's were included in my dish...all from the garden. I hope I'm not making someone feel threatened like in the jerk wing challange, but I don't think there's anything wrong with directing folks where the prep pages are....besides I think everyones initiled to vote for who they want.....my chances 20%...

Any ways the pizza dough is done but heres sometghing else I did with some unripe pods.

Here's a 3 gal carboy filled with green and semi ripe peppers. About 2.5 gallons of primo Cane Vinegar went into this.....no salt.
I wiil have to top off the solution tomorrow once it cools down. There's mostly Scotch Bonnets and JA Habs. I have a few of these in the 1 gal size. This one will age in the basement through the winter. I have a freezer full of pods that will be incorporated with the needed vinegar to make a batch of winter hot sauce...I usually make a Congo Red sauce for pizza's. That type of sauce will get a good cook down. Mostly peppers , spices and enough vinegar to adjust the ph. Sauce will get food milled to a smooth silky pour.

Haters be damned...you won that contest hands down. All great entries, but your teasers were better than their final platings! I caught the same type grief during the finger food throwdown...so I haven't gone back over there. Just felt dirty...and like I was an "outsider." I still enjoy following the threads and seeing what kind of awesomeness folks on here can throw-down. I'll leave that shark tank to the regulars though...

3 freakin gallons of pickled peppers??? You're an inspiration all the way around brotha! How do you sterilize a jar that size??? Do your best and trust the vinegar???

Oh so impressive, as always... Sad to say that your season is over but glad to see some new starts here soon...
Thanks,
I have to re-think the varieties for next season....A pencil with a large eraser might a good way of starting. Also, I have to plan out a new grow area with shelving and 3 dedicated 20a runs. It will be exciting once I can get started on the project...early next yr.

John you had a great run this season. Glad to see you planting in a bed, the plants looked huge and filled with pods. Container plants serve the purpose when necessary and the only possibility. The inground plants will always give you better results (if the ground is rich).

The coleus plants will thrive under the flouros. Theres a soil dunk that I could have used prior to taking the cuttings. The roots would absorb the chemical and if the plants have any motha-sucking insects on them they'd be dead before I'd take the cuttings and bring them indoors. I don't use that for the pep OW's though...just for any house plants that were brought out and back indoors, and any flower cuttings. Everything looked clean though, we did have a late nuisance of white fly but that resolved when the borderline frost moved in.

Thanks again,

Haha..Shane your humor always puts a smile on my face...creative thinking !

Yep I still have some plants with pods on them...they're easier to spot now that the plants have shed the leaves. Whats left has ripened quickly on the plants. Many Thai varieties waiting to be had.
This week week is in the 60's....the yard cleanup will continue this weekend.....and thank you ! Your glog ranks top here !

Yep the season's come to a close...another chapter

Your coleus wall is fantastic. Wings look great too.
Cool, I like that ..."wall". That sure beats calling it a border since there isn't tiers of larger plants behind them.

Wings were fun to make...and easy....the photo prep took time and thought.
