Plans for the garden

I've read a few threads about what different peppers everyone is growing, but this doesn't seem to be a one-veggie group. So what all are you planning on growing this year?

In addition to about 60 different peppers, six-eight different types of eggplant and tomatoes, here is the rest of the list I'm planning on (so far - may add more if I can claim more of the yard!):
Peas
Sweet Corn (if I can keep the squirrels from digging up the plants almost as soon as they sprout; I found a way to frustrate the racoons who ate the corn the year it did come up - duct tape the ears to the stalk!)
Green Beans
Potatoes
Carrots
Onions
Celery
Cabbage
Lettuce
Beets
Onions
Cucumbers (3 types)
Tobacco
Basil
Brocolli
Yellow Squash
Zucchini

I'll probably add a couple other things by the time spring gets here. As it is, I can hardly wait until late February or early March so I can fertilize then till the garden. I wish I could use the 1.5 cu./yds. of compost I have, but too many tomatoes were added late this fall for their seeds to have been destroyed. Next year, though - look out. I'll have a bunch of free, very good, organic fertilizer to spread.

y'know i've come to realize you all have a lot more space than i do...
other than peppers i'm just growing tomatoes, eggplant, and cukes.

My space is limited, too, which is why there are pots all over the yard, and vegetables in the flower garden. I have a nice big yard, my lot is slightly over a half acre, but I'm still recovering parts of the yard that were overgrown with scrub trees or covered with sheds. There were 7 sheds in this yard when I moved in, and I'm down to three. One was a garage where they worked on cars, complete with a engine hoist and an outhouse. I don't want to plant there, that's where a lot of my pots go.

Other than peppers and tomato's I won't grow much. Maybe a couple cucumber and squash.

My space is hardly large - 1200 sq/ft last year, and 1/3 of that was dead ground (which, like Pam's, will hold containers this summer). One can plants closer than "the book" recommends. Potato rows are supposed to be at least two feet apart, mine were about 10 inches. The beets and carrots were even closer - enough room for me to walk sideways through - maybe a foot between rows. No way could I walk between the rows of onions - six inches, max.

I figure if I stake my tomatoes, cucumbers and beans, I won't need more than two feet between any row. That gives me about 15 rows, especially since some of the rows will only occupy less than a foot. Not to mention, growing potatoes in "containers" will save about 24 feet linear feet of space.

wordwiz - sounds like you have a critter problem, why not fence in the garden ? does'nt have to be anything fancy, even the temporary type will work (snow fence with some cheap fence posts) well thats for small critters, deer you'd want a 6' fence

um, maybe it just seems like not a lot of space to you guys cuz you are growing all those plants but ya, that's a lot more space then me. i put about a foot, foot and half between rows and i have five rows, six if i push it (ie, i put the cukes right up against the fence last year to try and make them climb it). after that i have room for about two dozen containers, max (and i'm pushing it with that too) plus i sneak some in moms flowers.

Home grown Horseradish can't be beat, but . . . it takes a few years to get decent sized roots, here in Alaska anyway, but it's worth it. Fresh horseradish is the strongest, most flavorful you will ever taste and will spoil you big time. Even the so called "fresh" roots in the marketplace can't compare to freshly grated, right out of the garden 15 minutes ago horsersdish. It will also pretty much "take over" the ground it is planted in and just about next to impossible to get rid of once it takes root. Even peelings thrown out in the compost pile will start to grow!

Damn! Fresh horeseradish!!!!

I will have 40 pepper plants
Genovese Basil
Globe Basil
oregano
greek oregano
BBQ Rosemary(milder and slightly spicy)
thyme
thyme (you can never have too much thyme)
Blood Carrots (deep purple merlot like skin)
Italian flat parsley
curley parsley
3 kinds of Tomato
Cascade Hopsx2
Magnum Hops
Northern Brewer Hops
Mt Hood Hops
Vidalia onions

grumpybear - you need to remember the people with bigger gardens can have those sizes since they have the space, to me 1200 sq ft doesnt seem HUGE just average size of a garden. years ago my grandma had something like a 3 acre garden with another 10 acres in sweet corn.
just like I'm amazed at some for growing 500 chiles  while I only grow about 50  but thats plenty for me. everyone is different do with what you have or what you want to grow.

Too bad you don't live closer, I could relieve you of the hoist.

Heh, you're too late. An internet friend came to visit me right after I moved into this house, allegedly to pitch a little woo, but I believe I became immensely more attractive when I was bitching about trying to clean that shed out.

i am not set in stone yet as to what I am planting but I want to make salsa this year and I want it all fresh from the garden any input on what I need to grow for making salsa. (besides tomato's and peppers) but maybe some variety names of tomato's that are good in salsa.

Were you going to grow your own onion and garlic? That's cool.

As to tomatoes, most recipes I read suggest Roma tomatoes because they're more meaty and less juicy. Personally, I just use whatever I have to hand.

My thoughts exactly! Garlic is a must. Tomatos, whatever is ripe. Onion is a must, Cilantro? Some like it some don't.

The great thing about garden fresh salsa is it almost doesn't matter.

Two medium tomatoes and two jalapenos diced up with a little salt is delicious if it is fresh enough.

hmmm... lets see. we have about an 8000 sq ft garden space.
Sugar snap peas
Green onions
Half runner beans
Cucumbers
Tomatoes
Beets
Potatoes
Corn
Cabbage
Carrots
2 Atlantic Giant pumpkin plants in the side yard.
Bell Peppers
Naga Morich
Orange Habanero
Couple of wild Tepin plants(thanks AlabamaJack)
Possibly a few others once I receive the Pass the Parcel box.

Already started most of my chillies (about 14 varieties total...Unknown India Variety and Kashmiri Mirch just sprouted)

3 Varieties of heirloom beefsteak and 1 cherry tomatoe I will start the end of January

New variety of white eggplant
New variety of basil in addition to 2 other varieties, plus other herbs
Possibly adding 2 varieties of heirloom artichokes

ive been tempted to do a herb garden too this year...My cousin and I have to design the newly expanded garden this year to suit both our needs so it might happen..Can I grow horseradish from a biga** pot?? or is it worth it?? now to plant here at my place wont work and my hosta garden here has been invaded with garlic lol
Im just curious on the horseradish thing as AkButch basiclly said it takes over the ground you plant it on.Other thing would local nurserys carry horseradish pods/seeds?Ive never seen it myself
