Planting out...A month away

Well, I have been running around all day getting ready for next month's big plant out date. I ordered all of my block (324 total) for my garden beds and they should be delivered tomorrow. I went to a local garden center and inquired about soil. I told them what I'm planting and they recommended a mix of 2 parts of quality top soil to 1 part of compost mix. They said that they will call tomorrow with the amounts that they think I'll need. Does this ratio sound about right to everyone?

My planting out is about the same time.
(Just noticed - duh - same area!)

That sounds like the mix I'll end up with. I'm adding to what I've already got out there. I've decided to add top soil & compost to my garden are. Not using raised beds.

What all are you growing?

Here's my grow list, plus if I have room I'm planning on a couple types of tomatoes. Right now I only have 2 tomato plants, both are Beef Steak.

Ya, I started to get going on my folk's garden today. Went out and survayed the property.

Pepperfreak, what area of NE Ohio you at? I'm in University Heights (Cleveland). We have very clay filled soil here so you may want something to counter act that like sand or perlite to throw in your mix.

Good GOD Pepperfreak!!

I thought AJ was insane.(no offense AJ;))

That sounds OK, but I think that the manure should be really well composted if it is to come into direct contact with roots.

About 1 month here too. Can't Wait!!

I've got to wait until the middle of May for my tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers and peppers. I'll plant lettuce as sson as the ground allows me to till it and potatoes not long after that, followed by carrots, beans, squash and probably a couple of other veggies. I may even wait a week later as the seasons seem to be changing somewhat in the last couple of years.

I'm about 1/2 hour south of Canton right off I-77 in the Dover/New Philadelphia area. We are almost neighbors
I'm planning on building raised beds with about 1-2 inches of gravel, metal screen/wire, garden mesh then the soil mix...

And to think that this is only my first year! You should see what my grow list looks like for next year :) I probably won't have any room for the tomatoes, but oh well.

Ya, you're about an hour away from me.

Go Buffs...

Since colorado weather is so unpredictable, the local gardner tell us not to plant out till the first of June.
I am afraid by then, I will have huge plant indoor. Oh Well...

Good luck with your Plant Date.

Hey Paul...gotta ask...how much are they wanting for soil?...do you have any recycle centers there?...thats where I got my garden soil and paid 17.50/yd for it...when you say the garden center, I assume you are talking about your local nursery?...you might save yourself some bucks if you go the recycle route...

on the other hand, you guys need to just move south with the warmer weather, cheaper living, better soil, and lots better football  (I won't go there)

AJs Crazy?....well theres some news for you...

all I got to say is I absolutely love my raised bed...and from another thread, I am going to heat the soil and make a 50' long greenhouse 5 feet tall this fall to keep my plants going as long as I can afford to keep them warm...if the tomatoes don't clog the buried soaker hose up, I will even be able to water them without opening it up....I think I will call it my "Controlled Microenvironment"...crazy huh...roflmao

trying to plant a seed in your head pepperfreak...

They are going to call tomorrow with a price quote for both delivered and pick up. I am assuming that if I pick it up myself, it will be cheaper and thats what I'll probably do since I have a friend who will let me borrow his dump truck. I'll post the price quote when I get it...

Planting a seed about growing techniques or moving? We have already talked about how I would love to get back to Texas someday...:)

If its growing tips, well...I'm learning...LOL

Just thinking ahead for this next winter about the bed design is all.

I have been working on a design... I have been thinking about taking 2" pvc pipe and some pipe clamps. I think that if I cut the pipes to the height of my beds and fasten them with the clamps using Tapcons (concrete screws) then I could later place smaller pvc pipes inside to either make a hoop house out of plastic or secure netting for birds if they become a problem. I'm thinking about placing these "anchor points" about every 2 feet all around the inner walls of my beds.

It's Go Musketeers or Go Bearcats, depending on the sport. And of course, Go Bengals and Go Reds!

If I was going to do a raised bed, I would add a thin layer (maybe two inches) of sand, four-five inches of a sand/top soil mix (about a 1 to five ratio) and a layer (two inches) of clay. That's at least nine inches of stuff to grow in, not to mention the earth under it. Way more than enough, unless under it is concrete.

That's pretty close to what my garden ended up being like last year and I was impressed. (Not that I intended it that way!). We could have three inches of rain in two days and two days later, I could walk in it without getting my feet muddy. Few weeds grew in the clay and what did had practically no roots. But until the drought got to 45 days (with temps in the 95-103 range every one of those days) it held moisture quite well.

I don't know how this compares with other's production, but toward the end of the year, when a frost was coming, I dug up a hab and harvested 82 decent size peppers before it went dormant (and then spider mites destroyed it). I had probably got that many, maybe more during the year, but I didn't keep records. I set them out in early June and did't dig them up until early October.
