heat Pure capsaicin crystal dilution/SHU question

Hey All,

As a gag, a friend of mine got me a gram of pure 16M SHU capsaicin crystals and told me to snort it. Obviously not going to do that!

I normally would never have considered using or purchasing something like this but figure if I have it I might as well use it. Thinking about using it to bump the heat in some of my favorite store bought hot sauces without changing the flavor.

I’m planning on dissolving it in vodka and then using it a drop at a time. My question is on how the concentration works. Is the below correct?

1 gram 16M Shu crystals dissolved in 1 gram vodka = an 8 million shu solution

1 gram crystals with 2 grams vodka = 5.333M shu.

So wait... this stuff provides extreme heat without the metallic food ruining flavor of extracts!?
 
I'd love to power up some Marie Sharp's Fiery Hot, Frank's or maybe add it to The Last Dab since so many people want to brag by calling it underwhelming.
 
Supposedly. It’s supposed to be 100% heat and 0 flavor. I’ll let you know how it goes. Will probably test it out this weekend with some Tabasco brand chipotle sauce.

without getting too geeky about it, yes, that's right.
 
scoville heat value varies linearly with capsaicin(oid) concentration.
in fact, 1 SHU is often defined as approx (1/16) ppm. *
that's where your "16 MSHU" figure is coming from.
1 Mppm means 100% pure. one million parts per million.
therefore the concentration in your sample is 1 Mppm. maybe. let's just pretend it is 100% pure.
 
using the conversion factor i gave above, that means it is 1 Mppm * (1 MSHU)/((1/16) Mppm) = 16 MSHU.
 
so yes 50% pure -> 8 MSHU

I added it to 7 grams of vodka for a roughly 2M SHU solution. Put 2 drops on my tongue. Felt like I ate half a Carolina reaper and then unsuccessfully tried to put out a burning cigar on my tongue.

I can now attest to the fact that it is 100% heat and no flavor at all and none of that off metallic taste from extracts. Very excited to fortify some of my store bought sauces with this!

The Vamo Shop. Just checked it out, apparently they sell vape supplies and some chile related stuff. Lol.

My friend said he just happened to see the capsaicin when we was ordering cape stuff.
