Rough morning for me. I'm still getting used to utilizing a hoophouse to extend my season. I knew we were going to have a cold night last night so I closed up the hoophouse and got some candles going for heat. Apparently it wasn't enough to keep it above freezing in there and a good portion of my plants were killed. 67 plants is the deathtoll but luckily some were salvagable. Luckily, the majority of the plants are ones I can restart and get out late. Sh*t happens...

So sorry that this happened to you. If I can help with anything just let me know.

Was the forecasted temp close to the actual or did the weather guessers blow it real bad?

Sh*t happens and I just have to sally forth. The forecast said it would be possibly freeze and I thought I was prepared. Obviously two candles and two heat sink buckets are not sufficient to keep the hoophouse above freezing overnight. I'm not even going to consider placing anything in there until after Easter. . .

Well, luckily it isn't the end of the world. I'm still on the learning curve using my hoophouse at the beginning of the season. I'm a little shy now considering putting any more out there. Going to wait until we are out of the 30's for our overnight temps before even considering it again.

Thanks Dom! I will be fine and will be restarting more fresnos shortly. I was just really pissed off (and embarrassed) to see plants nearly a foot tall already hanging over dead when it could have been so easily avoided... :banghead:

On the bright side....It isn't your 3rd mild year doing this and then BOOM. Because of this year I am sure next year you will have a Country Hoophouse Hotel set up for them in the spring with heat, water and a swimming pool.. :D Live, Learn, Burn!

Still looking good.

Hey Red, sorry about the loss...FYI I bought a thermocube outlet when I first put up my outdoor shelter. It comes on at 35 degrees and shuts back off at 45 degrees. I ran a few strands of large Christmas Lights (C9) through and around the plants and it worked like a charm. You could go even bigger with a some 100 watt bulbs if need be. That way they only come on in the danger zone and don't burn all the time. Good luck on the replant!

Shane

Hmmmm.....I may need to pick me up one of those. It would be nice to have and to save some electricity. Thanks Shane!
They have several temp ranges, so be sure to get the one for those settings. Only about $10 and a great insurance plan. If you use one you have a couple options. You can put it outside the GH structure so when the temp outdoors is 35 it will kick on so that your plants stay well above the 35 degree cut on temp, or you can put it inside where it will come on when the temp inside hits it.
Good luck brother!
Shane

By the way...mine also acted as sort of a warning system. The lights from the GH shined into my bedroom window, so when they would come on I could get up and cover some of the other stuff if I hadn't already. I even thought of running an extension cord from it into the bedroom to a lamp when I first put my plants in the ground. There were several times the forecast called for 40 degree nights that we ended up with frost, but I didn't loose anything because the lights outside woke me up.
