Regarding the pinching off of buds...

I think it depends a whole lot on your climate and where you live. I pick off most annuum buds until almost July where I live and it works great for me, but I sure wouldn't do it that way if I lived in Texas or Florida

Damn!

So much to learn....

Where on earth would we find out the average size of a plant (and is there such a thing? Surely it would depend on climate and a host of other factors?)

...nice idea though.

;-)

I was thinking the same thing but was afraid to ask. I guess we have to grow a buttload of plants of all the varieties we are interested in for a few seasons, then we know the average size so we really can try this pinching stuff.

Where you would find the info as far as a specific source would also be unknown to me BUT I would say with some research someone could find out that kind of info. Every plant has an "average size", I mean they post info like that on the back of seed packages. I mean if you have seed that came from the same plant/pod and you grow one in the north and the other in the south and dont use any kind of enhancers I dont think your going to see a huge difference. Maybe some difference, but not enough that would make a world of difference. For instance if you grow a jalapeno plant and the average size is 2.5 feet tall by maybe 1-1.5 feet wide. You may get the plant in the north to be that size but maybe the one in the south is 2' 9". Sure its a difference and maybe climate attributed to it but was it a "HUGE" difference, no.

Climate always plays a part in plants but so do genes and both of them can only go so far into making a plant what it is. I guess my point is...

1) I would find it hard to believe that this kind of info isn't documented or unobtainable. -AND-
2) That an "average size" for any kind of plant can not be established simply due to how it may or may not grow in certain climates.

Simply put, if you try to grow a plant in a climate that does not meet all of its criteria then its obviously not going to live up to its full potential.

I live north of the arctic circle. Google it - you might think that Minnesota is in the north as far as I know. I am trying to grow subtropical plants in the friggin ARCTIC. I have never even seen "average size" at the back of a seed package (that might be because I haven't bought a seed package in years) but that wouldn't help. If a grower in Texas I do a trade with tells me that a variety grows to 150 cm and another person in Switzerland say that another variety grows to 30 cm I still have no idea what I can expect until I've grown them myself.

Will the low temperature stunt them? Will natural light 24/7 (not kidding!) make them grow faster? I don't know until I've grown them. Annuums often grow larger than they are supposed to, chinenses just seem to branch out a lot and turn into compact balls of growth, frutescens do whatever thay want, pubescens don't grow at all for some reason and this is the first year I've tried baccatum. But there are always exceptions - some chinense don't "ball" but stretch out like h-ll.

Thanks for trying to explain - but "average" size does not mean anything to me. How many days before I want to harvest would be more helpful - I have a pretty good idea how many days I have to add if someone in Texas or NSW gives me a number.

I guess my point was that if three out of four sources say that a Red Habanero grows to 36 inches... i'm pretty safe in pinching off buds if it is currently at 8 inches.

I find it easiest using a pair of tweezers to get in there and pull off the buds! That way there is less chance of damaging any new growth growing next to the buds.

I pinch buds / remove pods, but I only do it up to the point I feel the plant is large enough to sustain a good crop. So it isn't a set day, it is all about size. Pinched do seem to get bigger then non pinched.

Schweeet, thanks!

I think I will try to also find the days to maturity figs and add those to yours, 9b....then if the plant has a 65 day maturation period, I'll maybe stop pinching 95 days before maturation, thus giving the plant time to grow pods that can mature in 65 days.

You guys reckon 30 days is enough to grow a pod??
