basil is an annual no matter where its grown.

rosemary is a mediterranean plant it likes warm and dry.  Ive never had one survive a PA winter (too cold, too wet) I have high hopes this year though I planted one close to the south side of my house in a slightly sheltered elevated bed.  cool pics btw

Not necessarily - some varieties will overwinter and live for several years if ample light and temperatures are provided. African Blue is one example.

I'm sure you're right but it wouldn't increase productivity and the plants health would diminish leaving it open to infection or infestation which could spread.  I stopped growing blues since they dont reseed but awesome plants. bees go crazy for them.

Well my Thai Basil is still going strong, my culy died last week, over watter him :( Still have a Sweet basil too.
I have a small basil that is doing well it is a clone from my largest basil plant I've ever grown which was 4 feet this year.

Today I'm buying a Bay Laurel tree that is in a 1 gallon container that I will transplant into a 15 gallon and remain its permanent home. Bay leaves are so expensive and I like using them in allot of my sauces , stews and soups.
