.....eight hours to go!

I had to go back about 4 pages to find the last food pics I'd posted.  When 'back to work' the motivation to download and post things gets put out to the weekend.  Since this is a long weekend, I guess I have time to get caught up.

Trip to the store last week scored some beets.  I seem to remember John likes pickled beets, what the heck, I'm bored....

This little pot belonged to john's mom, she got it some time early in her marriage in Wales.  It's the perfect pot for shepherd's pie...and for roasting beets.

after roasting, peel and slice.  Some into a balsamic vinaigrette and some into a quart jar with onion slices, some blanched garlic, spices, and into a vinegar brine.

last weekend, I did up sinensis's rib rub recipe with no salt (see post #428 for the recipe.  I had it in one of the pics but it's pretty fuzzy~)

white sugar with molasses, and all the spices.  I had to really work in the molasses with a spoon, I think I'll try just blitzing everything in the FP next time.  I like the NoSalt at the beginning.  I probably put too much dry spice mix on the ribs before smoking, they definitely needed the wet sauce at the end.  All in all, WAAAaaaayyyy better than the pile of chit I did before!.  Thanks sinensis!

The cut picture was really out of focus, so I didn't bother~
But they were good!  Nice bite to the meat.  I count it as a win.

The Flycatcher babies are out of the nest!   The cat is on LockDown during daylight hours while the little fluffballs get their wings.  We've had a flycatcher nest on the front porch for about 6 years.  I don't know if this is the same parent pair or one of their babies come back with a mate.  We think it was the same pair for several years, i just don't know how long their life span is.  They do well as long as the cat is not out on the porch.  You can hear a different/stress call when the cat is out.  They don't bother with the dog.  He can sit right under their nest and they don't peep.  As soon as the cat appears, even through the window, the call changes.

side note, on the house we've been working on, which is pretty much totally open (windows, but no doors) I can hear a flycatcher stress call occasionally in the treas around the house.  It's probably a hawk or something as the trees are really tall, pretty sure there's no house cat threats.  But now there's a bunny who thinks the downdraft stove vent exhaust is a great safe place.  I'll try to get  picture tuesday.

No cans were harmed in the making of that potato salad, were there?

Did you cross post this in the Throwdown?

baby back ribs and macaroni salad.

my wife had SIP food delivered this morning. we didn't have much grilling meats in the freezer so i ordered a few pounds of ribs. no prep pics but my wife cut a section off because she doesn't do spicy. i seasoned mine with salt, fresh cracked pepper and garlic powder. i let them sit while i made the mac salad. i fired up my old Ducane grill that has seen better days and grilled them low and slow. when they were about done i sauced them with home made BBQ sauce. my wife pulled hers off at this point so i wouldn`t get any of "that stuff" on her ribs.  sauced and turned to carmelize.
