My local nursery has offered to sell any and all of my super hots that I grow this winter/spring. They stated that they would extend the same offer to me as they do their other suppliers which is a 35 % - 65 % split. 35% going to the house. Does that seem like a fair deal or am I wasting my time? For those of you with any experience in this field, what are the going rates for the plants? I'm planning on starting small and growing some Bhut Jolokias to start off with. I know that there are probably a lot of variables involved as far as calculating costs etc... but a ballpark figure would suffice at this point. Also, what is the "standard" size that you would normally sell them, if one exists or at least what size should I aim for? Any and all input would be helpful, thanks in advance.

Not sure on what size to sell them. The best thing I can suggest is talk to the nursery again and find out what THEY want. What size THEY typically sell their seddlings at. Just as a guess, I would say for size, maybe 6". Again, just a GUESS. Another guess, for RETAIL price, would be around $10 per plant. All I can suggest is do some research. See if there is anyone selling them in other local nurseries, flea markets, newspapers, etc. Usually not very likely, but you never know. Hell, even look on Ebay and some other online sites that sell the plants on a regular basis.

Why use a middleman?
They get 35% For doing nothing except giving you a place to keep your plants.
IMO, craigs list is a better option...it's free and people will come to you...plus you can keep all the profit yourself

I sell a few each year - the hot pepper craze is just now hitting Cincy. Mine are in 3" nursery cells and the plants are generally about 8" tall, completely hardened off and decent looking. For the superhots, I charge $5 per plant. Counting the cost of seed, lights, nuits, potting mix, I may have 70ยข in each plant. It will be less this year, as I won't need lights.
If you can sell to the nursery, and they are not going to sell them too cheaply, I would go for it. You can always sell on the side, via Craig's List, flyers, word of mouth. Sell them for the same price the nursery is but keep all the profits. Some people will visit a nursery and buy the exact same plant you are selling, at the same price you are charging but never consider buying off Craig's list. Nothing against you - but they trust the nursery.
One thing I plan to do this winter is to try to find as many community gardens as I can and try to strike a deal with them. Discount plants (toms, peppers, whatever I grow) to them, with the requirement they buy them in groups of six. I sold over $200 to one group of gardeners last year - imagine if I could work a deal with about 20 such groups!

I would sell them at the nursery for 35% more than I would sell the same plants on craigs list for. I would also sell them on ebay for about 15% more since ebay and paypal will need to be paid off. If you see one area selling more then others like ebay up the ante a bit and maximize your profit. I think a good price for a 3-6" plant would be $5.00.
