Sky High Tomato Prices

Just wanted to share that because of the cold weather in Florida, there has been much talk of sky high prices of tomatoes this year in the stores. I have already seen it in restaurants where you no longer get tomatoes on your sandwich unless you request it or they have a salad bare, but there are no tomatoes on it. Local farmers market prices are seriously high as well.

If you can, you may want to plant as many tomato plants as you can, if you like them, to avoid the high prices in the stores and make sure you have some!
 
I love it! If only the toms in my GH were ripe, I could be in seventh heaven. $1.88/lb for the cardboard ones at the store, and they sell cheaper than the big box stores do!

Planted tons, have a pressure canner, I rarely buy tomatoes anymore. I don't eat them fresh, so that just makes it easier on me.
 
I make and can too much salsa not to plant, the extras I planted, the different varieties, are for sauce experiments.
 
I'm trying a new one this year - a red stuffer. I'm hoping restaurants love this - fill it with tuna salad, egg salad, potato salad, rice, taco seasoned meat, mac n cheese, just about anything.

I agree, I do too. There are those, however, who depend upon me to bring in freebies throughout the summer and I've told them all, they better get a topsy turvy or some pots and plant some tomatoes if they want some this year whether they garden or not! Or pay the price!

I grow my own herbs for my salsas as well. Do you? I grow a bunch of herbs that have nothing to with my salsas or relishes as well. If I want a nice cold mojito, I have mint on my porch, if I'm making and Italian dish from scratch, I have my basil, thyme, oregano, and bay laurel leaf all on the porch etc. I'm trying to find a lemongrass plant. I love to cook Asian food and I would love to have the lemongrass for my Thai recipes. I also have ginger growing on my porch. I started it in the house and just set it out when it got warm. I'll bring it back in when it gets cold in order to keep ginger year around.

I've been wanting to stuff some large cherry tomatoes myself, as an hors doerve type of thing. I want to stuff them with a crab and shrimp mixture to give a succulent bite!

I started growing hollow stuffer tomatoes a few years ago and I make a chopped Greek Salad filling for them that's fantastic. I wouldn't be without 1-2 types each season now.
 
Personally I'd rather have no tomato at all then the overpriced, gas ripened, cardboard tasting grocery store toms
I've got about 60 tomato plants going this year and hope to make a few hundred jars of tomato salsa and then a big batch of roasted Anaheim pepper salsa too. I thought I made a lot of salsa last year but it only lasted about a month and a half.

actually these people dont suply the grocery stores but sell plants of more rare varietys of peppers tomatos and herbs

Are you referring to Cross Creek Nursery? I ordered some tomato plants from them a couple of years ago because they have such a large variety and I wanted to make different color tomato salsas. They don't travel as well as the peppers. For the most part, they did well, but I had a couple that were diseased. The tomatoes were deformed on these plants. I didn't order anymore tomatoes after this. But I swear by their peppers!!
 
I noticed a discount produce store was selling slicing toms for $1.89/lb. This week, they have cluster toms from Mexico (about 2/3 the size of the previous ones) for $1.69.
