container Something is digging in my containers

Walked outside to check on my peppers and one container had about four inches of dirt scraped out from one side of the pot to the other.

Oddly, the plant itself was not bothered, just the dirt. I'm guessing it was either a squirrel or cat, but I didn't find any nuts or crap in the pot.

I may need some grizzly bear urine!

Mike

do you guys have armadillos up there?

AJ,

No armadillos and definately no fuzzy tree rats. Squirrels, probably field mice, cats, a small ground hog (it was living in my shed/barn, a raccoon, wabbits and I did see a deer in the nieghborhood for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

Mike

big rat traps are a pretty good deterrent...may not catch the culprit but will certainly sting the nose...make sure to tie the trap down to something other than the pepper plant...

Iggy,

I hate to say it but someone from the Mistake by the Lake (and GardenKiller) has increased my knowledge. This fall, I'll have to ask my nephew how many tree rats he managed to kill.

Mike

You could get a dog, that would scare 'em away..... unless it was RB's dog, who would then eat the chilli plants. Or mine, that would urinate on em and burn the poor plants with her high concentrate urea.

Just because we're dumb enough to be Browns fans, doesn't mean we can't teach ya a trick or two ;)

Heres something that happen to one of my friends that I gave some plants too. He has all his plants on his balcony on the second floor and he has raised them there for a while well the other night he spotted a raccon going thru his pots digging. Guess what he was using for fert? Fish emulsion the racoon was smelling the fert and was looking for the dead fish lol he chased him/her off and now looking for a way to prevent him climbing up the post to the balconey just an idea

You definitely have to be careful with fish products, I've had lots of plant dug up by critters looking for an easy meal. I wouldn't worry about cow manure.

cow manure....IGG you been lookin for shroons again?

Gotta be tree rats. (squirrels)
We had us a throwdown in my yard one year. little bastards kept digging in my pots up on the deck. never buried anything, just dug.
I finally ended up trapping about 12 of them and carted them all over to Wisconsin on the other side of the river. figured that if they wanted to get back they either had to swim or brave the bridge. haven't seen any on the deck since then.
