Spankyscolts 2014 GLOG Season 3

Well folks here we are again at the dawn of another growing season . For me this is a rubber match year of sorts, you see the first year we were wildly successful then after my grow partner passed I was indecisive about growing again but after multiple mind changes I started too late and was a bit too ambitious as a result I had a bad year, it started with an aphid outbreak and ended with many green pods even the ones that did ripen weren't of the quality that I expect so that brings us to this year I have another partner in that he grows half of what we have at his place, we share resources and such but are otherwise seperate. I also decided to limit what I grow instead of trying to grow out 40-50 strains I settled on 12 at first but in this last week added another 10 or so but the key here is smaller. I do this because I enjoy it and I get to make a few bucks and share in THP community.

I'm not great at keeping my GLOG as updated as some but will share as often as I can with the good the bad and the ugly.

It is common in other plants I grow and I have carried the habit over, if you are refering to a presoak? or general higher moisture? Maybe I'll whip some out, still have half a bag here somewhere.

You can pop a corner off and fill the hole in, I've done it to keep stems snug, but I know I've seen it used to pull helmets. Although pepper seeds seem to have more difficulty shedding them, atleast the ones I've gotten above ground so far :)
You can also use tweezers and bury the seed into the puck meaning push it deeper than the hole Ive done that as well, should provide some resistance for the hull .... Good Luck !!

And yes though I don't soak I was referring to pre-soaking

Yesterday I picked the best 54 plants from the 74 I have under lights and potted them into 1 gallon pots with my standard 50/50 mix of Happy Frog and Ocean Forrest along with 10-15% of large perlite and amended with Oyster Shell meal for calcium. Here they are taking in a little sun.

So the process of hardening off begins which is tricky here with this fickled weather. I also need to decide what to do with the 30 culls and start seeds of my Brain Strain cross . Will check in again later.

Looking great, Robin.  Looks like Spring is coming if we can just get a little lucky!

I've got some descendants of the plants you gave me in 2012 going this year.
A 3rd gen. Giant Not White Hab, a 3rd gen. Fatali/Savina cross, and a 2nd gen.
Bhut Jolokia Red (Ghost?).  Sorry I don't have room in my grow for the
Brainstrain cross - definitely next season, bro!

Thanks guys a lot of my plants have that puckered look like they do when they are calcium deficient but attemps to correct with CalMag have not been successful.. Any ideas? The CalMag I have is from last season does it go bad ?

So it's been awhile since Ive updated my GLOG, have been in the process of hardening off my plants but the weather has been crappy not enough sun to do it properly anyway here's some updated pics

Here's a group that I had culled but after sitting around and turning ugly I decided to pot em up just couldn't bring myself to toss em out. I bought a generic soil less potting mixture ( cheap ) and potted them up some of these plants were on the verge of giving up the ghost, after potting em up I put em outside with the others only they have saw no sun because if the weather. They have been under a covered porch.

These don't look as good as the others but they have improved ... Notice they are greener than the others and IMO need sun

Both sets of plants are great, Robin!  The second set
is a bit leggier and more open, but still look great.  A
lot of folk would take that in a heartbeat!
You should have a banner grow this season.

Will you be able to grow out all 84 plants?  You
are as bad as I am.  Although I am getting better,
and can cull without angst now.

Ok time for an update , I decided this year to put all my plants in the ground instead of pots, well they had been on the picnic table awaiting proper weather for transplanting and that time was this weekend. I was shocked to find that my plants had been hit hard by slugs!! They had chewed holes in leaves and almost destroyed many plants!! But I decided to press on, so I prepped the soil with Black Gold soil conditioner and Chicken Manure worked it in then I dug holes for each of the plants and put 2 big scoops of an all
Purpose mix that's well amended with some grade 3 perlite a little oyster shell then once the plants were in the hole I tossed in a handful of earthworm castings and a mineral amendment that has Calcium and Magnesium among others. These plants look sad, I had to remove many leaves but Ive seem worse recover. At this point Ive done all I can do, time will tell of it was enough. This year I ONLY grew supers didn't even put in a vegetable garden so if there are any crosses it'll be a super! Still thinking about covering the lot of em but have not decided for sure. Here are some pics.

Here's murders row, this group is Jigsaw, Butch T from Butch T, The Naga Viper, and The Carolina Reaper

Here's the rest

Well that's it for this update will keep you posted as to how well they recover. I don't remember exactly how many there are but it's a little over 70 plants .. Wish me luck ; )

Sorry Paul just saw your post ! I still struggle to cull lol. I hope your season is going well thanks for the kind words !

Oh no, slugs!  I struggled with them last year, but for some reason they're not too bad.  I put out some slug bait after a rain, maybe a month ago, squished one here and there, but I haven't seen any in a while.  I think the polar vortex we had here on the east coast wasn't too kind to the overwintering pests...

Yea if you look close enough in the pic you can see slug bait sprinkled around. Beer also works VERY well just put it in a dish
. They had been sitting out for a few weeks and I had not really checked up on them so to see the level of damage I was shocked .. I think they will rally hard over the next few weeks

Slugs can be such a pain.  Good luck with keeping them at bay...

Looking good my man.. I might not even get any thing this year.. I just started my plants an hour ago. (face palm)

Well this is one week since my plants have been out of pots and into the ground. This is also the first time Ive grown this many plants in the ground, not to mention these plants were in sad shape before going into the ground, just from being hardened off and rained on repeatedly in pots, then the slugs got em so as far as plants go I give them a overall grade of C - D before transplant and so far they don't look a lot better. When I planted them I sprinkled worm castings around each plant before filling in the hole, well towards the end when I was planting my favorites I not only sprinkled around the plant but put some in the hole and set the plant on it and these seem to be doing better. They all seem stable but I don't think they've been able to take advantage of the nutes yet so we'll revisit them in a week . The slugs are no longer an issue as I put down dome bait. All in all not bad but still waiting for them to bust loose thanks for checking in.

Some pics

Some plants here you can see the slug damage and these are some of the good ones

Your plants will bounce back with a vengeance, Robin!

I've gotten into the habit of sprinkling a few slug pellets around any new planting,
and I find that really nips the problem in the bud.  On the bright side, I haven't seen
hoards of aphids yet, this season!  Knock on wood!   :silenced:

Your plant out looks great - I stand by my earlier prediction of a banner year for you.

Ahh thank you brother !! I figured that the uptake of organic nutes might be slow so I mixed up 1 tbsp fish, pro grow, Maxicrop seaweed, I tsp CalMag and a touch of a 2 prt water treatment to 2 gallons of water and gave them all a shot and then watered them as some were wilting and NOW today they look wonderful ! Likewise Ive seen no aphids perhaps the winter was cruel enough to keep them in check. Thanks for the encouragement I'll take your kind words to the bank !!!
