Spicegeist 2014 - The Year of the Bhut

This year I'm growing primarily bhut/naga types.

Not much to look at now, but thought I'd kick things off since I'm already starting seeds:

Here's my list:
  1. Red Bhut
  2. Choco Bhut
  3. Yellow Bhut
  4. Peach Bhut
  5. Shabu Jolokia
  6. Naga King
  7. Naga Morich
  8. Naga Suomi
  9. Dorset Naga
  10. Guwahati Bhut
  11. Pale Bhut / Bih Jolokia
  12. Jay's Peach
  13. Fatalii
  14. Lota Bih
  15. C. galapagoense

Hi Charles, I thought you might like to know your Chintexle, Chintexle cross and Donne Sali are giving up ripe pods. I'm waiting to get fully ripe pods from the Texas Pequin to compare and contrast with the Chintexles, but I sampled the Donne Sali last night. No unique flavors to make it stand out, but nothing objectionable either... and like most small, seedy peppers it packed a pretty good punch up front, then faded fairly quickly. I was really amazed how small they were!

Really nice pics of your Bhuts too...  The first of my Guwahati Bhuts is just starting to color up. Still waiting on the King Naga and BOC.

Keep 'em green!

I'll have enough seed in a few weeks, just waiting for some pods to ripen on the plant.  I'll send some your way if you want to grow it next year...

Haha, thanks buddy.  I can send you some of the cumari cross if you want to grow it.  It might actually be easier for me to send pods out...

It would be a honor to grow some of those bad boys!  Ill have to send you something, just let me know!

Looking good... maybe you should try one of my donne sali crosses next year ;)

Ok, sounds good.  Let's talk more in the fall about that.

Here's what the Cumari do Para x Donne Sali F2 yellow version looks like today:

Here are a couple of shots of another F2 plant, but this one is red, and very much takes after the chinense side on the inside (very hot and crunchier):

Let me know if anyone wants to grow out the F3 plants of either of these.  I probably won't have the space to grow them myself in 2015.

Really nice job this year Charles!

Ok, here's what's going out to you today, so you can ID what's in the box.

Going clockwise, starting from the top left, 3 red bhuts from pepperlover that turned out a little bit different from others I've grown from her seed, 3 naga kings, 24 cumari do para x donne sali yellow, 9 c do p x d s red, three dorset nagas, 5 of my favorite chiltepin:

So when you grow out the cumari do para crosses, those plants will be F3.

Naga kings look nice!

Yeah, they're nice peppers.  I'm still considering whether I want to overwinter the naga king plant or not.  It grows pretty well from seed, so there might not be real need to do that...

Again, these aren't the best pics, but you can see what I'm trying to show...

One of the Shabu Bhut plants puts out pods that are very uniform, they all look like this:

Those shabu pods look killer! I like the pics people are posting of your CAP 501 cross too!

Also, I would be interested in both phenos of those cumari crosses if I may... I could send a sasbe or pay for a couple!

Hey Charles, dropping by to show how your Cap 501 x Bhut F2 is doing...

Yessssssssss!!! Nicely done Portuge! How's the taste and heat on them?

Amazing bhuts you got going there Charles! Last year I received some fresh bhuts that were pretty long I think I still have the seeds left and I'm definitely gonna grow them next year both chocolate bhut and red bhut and yellow since I love yellow pods.

I can't say how excited I am about all these hybrids, I enjoyed the CAP 501 x Donne sali and today I was super happy to see a F2 seed pop! I can't wait to see the difference if there's any otherwise it's still a nice variety. The Tepin x 7 pot Barrackpore just started making buds pretty fast, I'm ready to hand pollinate those to see if I get seeds later on.

That Cumari do Para x Donne sali is pretty nice. Hope to get the chance to grow it.

Here's a shot I made for the CAP 501 x Donne sali F1 incase someone on here hasn't seen it.

Thanks guys, crosses are looking nice.

Well, next week things will get very busy for me.  I'm a grad student and an adjunct instructor at two different universities and classes start this Monday.  I'm seriously considering putting peppers on pause for the next year while I write my dissertation and try to position myself appropriately for life after grad school.  I love starting, growing, fretting over, seed collecting and trading, and all the rest with my peppers, but I think I may need to set this hobby aside to focus my energies on finishing my PhD and attempting to transition to a more stable career situation.

I don't usually get very personal on here, but I thought I owed it to the community to let you know.  I've really received a lot of help and support on here over the past few years, and it's been very important to me personally.  Thank you!

I've always liked this dancing pepper :)

Wow, that's sad... I know this is a fun hobby and all but I do know for sure that anything that has to do with life and future is a priority. Family too, so sometimes it's ok to let it rest for a bit and focus on what's ahead.

We might not want you to leave, but I certainly understand and I'm sure everyone here does too. I'll still be growing out your crosses and so you'll still remember you. Not like if we're gonna forget someone as cool as you who brought us all sorts of cool stuff and shared your pepper life with us.

After you finish the priority and the stuff you need we hope you come back, but you know you can always keep a few plants in the garden ;).

I've been there Charles, maybe just scale down your grow a bit. I'm sure that pepper growing and 'real life' can go on together (my newborn son tried to convince me of the opposite in the past season ;) ).

Good luck!
