Spicy Chicken's MMXII Grow Log (The Hot Spot Pepper Shack)

Hello everyone!

Planting seeds is still a couple of weeks away yet but thought I would start out with an introduction and let you know a little bit about our place we call The Hot Spot or should I say what others call it, I call it a garden. ;)

Here is a little bit about our hobby farm and how we turned what once was an old abandon farm into our favorite place to be.

This is a family oriented hobby farm located in Northeastern Wisconsin. The farm is about elevan acres in size but we are utilizing only a small portion for the garden. Even though our growing time is short we use every day given to produce some of the best peppers in the state.

We have lived here since 2002 and our garden is just a smidge over 1/2 acre. As each year has passed the pepper garden has grown. Our garden for the year of 2010 had just over 1000 pepper seedlings planted, 2011 2000. Although no herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers are used, we are not organically certified and do not claim to be.

The compost that is integrated into the soil is procured from a large organic dairy farm a few miles from our home. The soil is sifted and mixed with the compost to create raised, plastic mulch covered beds, thus giving us the ability to control soil heat, moisture and weeds. As the plant grows, we denude the early buds, giving plants time to become strong and resilient.

After the first denuding, plants are then allowed to grow into a nice leafy foliage that produces great tasting peppers we are happy to be able to share with others.

From our family to yours, Thank you!

I am in the midst of building a grow room with a second story green house where this year I will be able to start the plants. Some of you may have seen the tread in Grow Tech category, might be interesting if you’re ever bored. http://www.thehotpepper.com/topic/23974-spicy-chickens-grow-room-and-greenhouse-makeover/f

Worked very hard at it last summer, my wife calls it The Pepper Shack.

A couple of before and after pics.

As you can see I have a long way to go, but at least I will be able to start the seeds in there, really looking forward to that.

More to come. thanks for looking! SC

Sorry everyone for not responding, looking forward to that but just so so so busy! I will though. ;O)

Update:

Weather has permitted to put some of the plants under the plastic above the pepper shack.

To date we have ruffly 80 18 cell flats and 4 32 cell flats transplanted, didn't do the math but it's a start. Also we have 16 98 cell flats already germinated or will be with in a few days, just 24 more 98 cell trays left to seed. WooHoo almost done ;O)

Things are starting to take off. I bought a 14x34 hoop house last winter, "O ya its still winter and 80 degrees today" thinking about putting that up very soon, need to buy a cover for it and build the end wall.

Things are starting to kick.

Those babies are so lush and green it almost looks like your growing romain lettuce! Glad the weather is cooperating for you, not so much here, on and off hail and mid 50's today in San Diego.

Your plants are really starting to perform.........I'm hoping the forecasters are wrong, and we'll get an early spring.....maybe a month early!
Your time is tight, update when you can. .........It's always worth the visit.

Thanks everyone!

Just a quick update:

Revamped the transplanting area a little with a handy dandy piece of OSB for convenience and getting a little tired of writing on knives, into the third box of a thousand now. O well. ;O)

First class as always Jeff! You're a machine! The amount of work you have put in on the space renovations is staggering, then throw in the 3rd box of 1000 knives...that is a ton of potting. Your Butch t's look about perfect! Great job on the pics!

Keep the updates flowing!

Jeff I just got to your Glog was turned onto it by Shane I think and man just amazing grow you have me absolutely fasinated! We just popped up 250+ plants and I was whinning like a school girl lol. You my friend are potting some peppers! What do you do with all of em ? It's safe to say I'm hooked and will be back again. I wish I could spend hours checking out everyone's Glog but who has that kind of time? This seems almost like a full time adventure for ya. Again great job !!

Amazing as always. With your plants so close to each other are there any worries about bacterial leaf spot? I had exactly that kind of closeness and due to my grow room being so humid some plants got leaf spot. Maybe thats why you have a de-humidifier?

Thanks buddy, I made a mistake though, I thought those were a little short for Butch T's, they are actually Bhut Yellows, but still overall nice plants I think.

How you doing Spanky? 250 plants is quite respectable for sure and a ton of work. Thanks O ya and I sell dried pepper powder. :O)

Thanks PepperJam, No subtropical climate going on under the canopy, Fern Gully would be mad. lol Lots of air movement, bottom watering and the dehumidifier keeps er at about 35% humidity, I haven't seen any leaf spots yet; knock on wood.

The third box of a thousand.......makes me tired.

Time to take a nap for sure, ;O)

Yes, second pic on post 101, doing well.

Jeff the puzzles coming together or shall I say your on the fast track to getting those plants into a permanent home. Your grow room looks immaculately clean! With plenty of space to move around it must be a joy to work on the plants. My time is limited but I wish I had your space indoors and more so the endless garden plot outside.
Keep up with the photos, it's encouraging for me to view and I can't imagine what folks are thinking for the 1st time of viewing your glog from page one.
Good luck with the outdoor planting!.....It will be here soon...
