Jacque, yes if it is formal chemical restraint there are other options. Our culture uses a more passive approach to chemically restraining its population. Know a couple that fosters. The state paid doctor prescribes codeine cough medicine to treat children for what is likely separation anxiety. Punch line being recreational drugs are often the claimed reason for that separation. So, the state takes children for their use of opiates in an off label manner and then drugs those kids with opiates in an off label manner. Ah but it is OK cause the pusher has an MD behind his or her name.
But I am not speaking to a forced sort of a thing more than a cultural thing. Western culture has been tricked into believing pain, any pain, normal pain, every day pain is bad. Its not. Not at all. It is how our body says dont do that. Yes, you can refuse pain medication while in the hospital. I just had toe an part of my foot removed. Said no many times. Nurse figured me out fast, excellent staff at that hospital. If someone was coming to move me, change bandage or what not she followed with morphine injection. Was on my chart at will up to x amount, we talked and she knew I would want it if those things were happening.
Anyway, the brain washing is why we have such a problem with pill mills. The pain clinics that push the stuff out on a pubic that has been tricked into thinking doctors alwasy know best. Sure, you feel good for a while. But then you cant pee without a tube shoved up your urethra. On my side of the marriage, I know folk who have died practically with a needle in their arm. On my wife's side of the marriage, its respectable folk with their pill mills soaking pain patches to get every last drop. Oh its OK, I got a prescription.
On the surgeon not sending in an order for it to be cleaned and bandaged: My guess is that it never crossed his mind that an ER would not clean and bandage or that the staff doctor would not for three days. But now that time has passed and I have learned more, I find he sent a request that it be cultured before I even left the ER. He is not liable at all because only the hospitalist (the hospital doctor) can actually write the orders.
Shit went bad to worse. Went septic. rushed to different hospital. They culture and near immediately cut off toe and part of foot. Lots of other things involved, but essentially seems first hospital was unknowingly treating a MRSA like antibiotic resistant staff with antibiotics that would do nothing for it. Even after they got the results of the culture that was done days later, they did not bother to call to say I should change my antibiotics to something that would work.
I am not ragging on all doctors. Some are good, some are bad, a couple just saved my life. Am ragging on the culture that tells folk opiates are good. They are great if you want to pee threw a tube.
