Stalled Bhuts?

Looks like I have another problem with another tray of bhuts.....

They seem to have stalled at the 4-leaf seedling stage while all the others are doing fine. I'm growing them by a window now to catch light from outside, temperature stays 70-71 all day until they get some sun of course. Same treatment for all my others.

Any thoughts, recommendations? They seem to have been stuck at 4 leaf stage for 3 weeks now....

Are they too small for a little fertilizer?

i haven't had a problem with bhuts but datil & rocoto did start acting up on me, so i mixed up a fresh batch of weak alfalfa/epsom salt tea and after about a week they have started to come around, especially the rocoto. you may wish to cover the bhuts with some form of dome to increase their humidity level, i left mine in a heated germination mini greenhouse and kept a higher humidity level before exposing them to the real world of "the window".

the ones on the left, and another tray look exactly the same... kinda pale and not growing. Ones on the right are medusa peppers the same age.

Theres your problem miracle grow is some real junk. for growing peppers get some fox farms or Cori end of problem. keeps the roots way to wet.peppers don't like wet feet.

Wouldn't that affect all the peppers?

Garp, just don't give up on them. All the chinenses are slower growers - especially at the starting stages, but once they get to a certain size, they'll take off. I had a lot of problems growing them this year - they looked a lot like yours do, kind of yellow-ish and sad, plus the leaves started falling off of mine - on some all the leaves fell off or just one or a couple were left. I even had one fall and break the stem (if you can even call it that at this stage) so I basically cut its head off with a pair of scissors and left it without leaves - and it still eventually grew new sprouts and is now one of the nicest looking plants I have. But it took four+ months to really get them from seed/seedling to something resembling a sturdy plant.

Also, about being too wet - I don't know, a lot of people say that, but I've found that my seedlings like to be wet. I've done some non-scientific experimenting and the ones I kept wet basically all the time (not soaked, but just nice and moist) did considerably better than those who I let dry a bit and then water again. Idk, I think the dry/wet cycle is better suited for adult plants, not seedlings - but I'm an amateur, so it could be that I just messed the other plants up some other way...

try planting all your seeds in Cori and see the difference between the two. i"m knot going to waste my time explaining it to an expert. not telling him to give up just find a good growing medium there is alot of them out there MIRACLE GROW is crap enough said.

I wasn't suggesting you were telling him to give up and I have 0 experience with MG or the other mediums you mentioned... I hope you didn't take it as a dig at you because it wasn't meant as such.

I will never use that stuff again! At a minimum buy the regular miracle grow, preferably switch to pro-mix. Your plants will take right off once they are out of the moisture control crap!

The hotter peppers are effected more, chinese in particular annums will grow fine in just about anything.

I'm afraid the stress of moving them will finish them off but they are getting worse every day. Any recs for a good re-planting mixture? Miracle grow pro mix?

with a moisture control product you dont need to water it very often after the initial transpant soak i didnt water again (bottom watering) for around 10 days then every 7-8 days(Bottom)from then on.
I am not using Miracle Grow but i am using a Moisture Control product thats very similar for my cups(as for when i goto buckets i will not be using moisture control) and look at these babys.

So i dont think your problem is the moisture control mix as others here were so quik to blame. possibly you just gave the medium to much water

I'd have to respectfully disagree on the MG Moisture control. I think it has a bad rep because it says MG in the name. Not saying it is the best soil out there, but it will work fine. Been using all year and my plants are doing pretty darn well. This particular MG does NOT hold moisture. I used a Promix and I can say from my experience it held water far longer then the MG did.

As far as your bhuts, try doing some bottom watering with some botanicare progrow and karma. They love this stuff (as all the peppers do) and they will work fine.

For a bhut that was starting January 23, 2011 and grown in MG Moisture control with botanicare...and this pic is about 2-3 weeks old.

Why did you do that? That doesn't make any sense. You're not going to get better results by depriving them from light.

Also, your MG looks pretty wet from the pictures. I'm also using MG this year and I hate it, but it's managable if you don't over water it. All my cups have a light brown hard crust on the top, even after watering. If you soak that stuff, it will stay soaked way too long. When I first potted up to beer cups and MG, I gave everything a good soak and went on vacation. A week later they were just as wet as they were when I soaked them. I had to put a box fan on them for about 100 hours to get them back to moist and not soaked.

How's your water? Making sure to use water without chlorine and other chemicals does make a huge difference.

Fish emulsion works wonders and costs about $7 for a liter at Home Depot. A liter will last a long time.

I have to say your experience maybe the exception not the norm. Not to be mean or bash MG up until this year I have been a beleiver in MG I used MG potting mix for the last few years religously. This year I got the MG moisture control at an exceptional price so I figured what the hell I'll give it a shot. And have had nothing but problems ever since, it stays far to wet, it compacts way to much and I literal found plants that the roots refuse to grow in the stuff, preceding to grow BETWEEN the mix and the container instead.

Transplanted to 2 different peat based soils, the root balls exploded, plants took right off. Nothing else changed so I have to blame MG-MC.
