Stickman's 2012 Gochu Pepper Glog

Well, here we go... Started about 35 Korean Gochu Peppers and a few Korean salad peppers, jalapenos and orange habs. All are mostly up today but the habs. I started them early last week in my heated grow tent down in my cellar on top of a grow mat, but didn't have the thermostat quite dialed in. When I left it it was 70 degrees f. in the tent. When I checked again the next morning it was 85 degrees, and I was afraid I'd cooked the seeds, so I moved them onto my kitchen windowsill on the grow mat and awaited developments. Looking much better now. I'll give the Habs until the weekend to pop, then move the flat down to the grow tent.

Nice! I see a lot of delicious food seasoned with these powders in my crystal-ball. :fireball:
Thanks Balázs
it'll surely happen... just busy as all H@%# at the moment... Late summer is a busy time for me. I'm filling in for the other Home Health Aides that are taking their family vacations now. I'll be taking mine around Christmas and driving up to New Brunswick, Canada with my wife to spend the holiday with her Mom. Let me warn you about the people there... Perfect strangers will try to feed you to within an inch of your life!

Those powders look great, Rick!

My Cayenne rista is looking kind of sorry. Some of the
peppers aren't drying a nice red color, but dark. The flesh on the
new pods seems thick at the top, so it doesn't dry very well. Dam!

I'm going to follow your lead and just put everything in the dehydrator
from now on!

Ouch! I only put the Chimayos in there because some of them were molding inside the pods... Now that I have a dehydrator, it's so much quicker that I may as well use it for the rest as well. I think I'm not going to pull any more Jalapenos until they get red-ripe... then I'm going ot make one of those improvised cold smokers with the tin can and the soldering iron and make moritas... You asked what those were before... they're ripe jalapenos, smoked and dried so they keep some of their red color. The other method of drying them out completely in warm smoke takes all of the color and turns them brown. I think the moritas have more of the jalapeno sweetness and less of the smoke flavor, but enough of both to be very tasty.

The powders look great Rick
Thanks Fernando
I'm looking forward to cooking with them just as soon as things slow down a little bit... Have a great weekend guys!

Hi Hooda
Maybe so, but I plan on dyeing some cabbage and Korean radish cubes with it in a couple of months! I figure I'll need two quarts of Gochu Garu to get me through the winter. If I have enough left over after that I'll make a batch of Gochu Jang too.

Hi All
This morning's harvest... Cilantro, Amish Paste plum tomatoes and 3 quarts of gochu peppers.

I'll hang the gochus up in a ristra to finish ripening in the sun, then I'll run them through the dehydrator to make powder. Have a great weekend all!

Those powders are good enough to dye fabric in.. that is what I'm talking about!
Yup...could dye you some red long underwear with them and be really warm this winter!

Nice harvest Rick, and powder. Really amazing seeing the payoff of your jump start. Still have not received the package yet...I'll let you know when it arrives.

Hi Shane

Hi Doc
Glad you like the pics. Here's one of today's harvest hung up in ristras to finish ripening...

Cheers All!

Those ristas are monsters, growing fast! I assume
that when ripe, you will throw them in the dehydrator?

Your getting quite a haul from your pepper plants, Rick!
Great to see your hard work pay off.

You got it Paul... I was going to air dry them all but was getting mold inside some of the Chimayos. That's when I decided to get the dehydrator. Now that I have it I may as well use it, and it'll materially speed the harvest along.

I think you've got the right idea, Rick.

Thanks Guys!
I've got about 2 and a half cups dried and powdered, so I'm a quarter of the way toward my goal.

Boy, I wish you could all get a whiff of this stuff... A little more pungent than the Chimayo molido, but equally earthy, sweet and complex.
