Stickman's 2013 Glog - Time To Pull The Plug on 2013

I'm pulling things together to get ready for my next growing season. I bought NuMex variety seeds from Sandia Seed company in New Mexico, Hot Paper Lantern Habaneros and Antohi Romanians from Johnny's Select Seeds in Maine and Korean varieties from Evergreen Seeds in California. Due to the unbelievable generosity of a number of THP members I've also gotten seeds to a wide variety of chiles from around the world. Special thanks to BootsieB, stc3248, romy6, PaulG, SoCalChilehead, joynershotpeppers, highalt, cmpman1974, smokemaster, mygrassisblue, Mister No, chewi, KingDenniz, orrozconleche and most recently and spectacularly, Habanerohead with a great selection of superhots and peppers from Hungary!

There are eleven varieties of Hungarian peppers in here, mostly the early, thick-fleshed, sweet ones that range from white through yellow to purple and red.., plus Aji Lemon Drop, BJ Indian Carbon, Naga Morich, Bishop's Crown and TS CARDI Yellow! Now I just have to go through my seed bank and match the space available to what I want to grow. Thanks Balázs!

I forgot to say Rick i got your seeds in the mail about 2 weeks ago. Massive thanks!! Do you know that I only sent that envelope last Thursday Rick. That's less then a week !! Hope they survived the trip OK.

It's ironic that the first thing your peppers will ever see is snow ;)
Yep... it is, innit. What we got in the last snowstorm is melting fairly quickly. We went from 20 inches to about 8-10. More is due this weekend, but I expect it'll all be mostly gone in 3 weeks or so. Then it'll be time to prepare the beds for planting when the weather cooperates and the ground thaws... probably in early April.

Nice, I was shocked how well germination was for the annuums. I think I only have 3 that failed to germ as of now. Good luck on your continued grow!
Good news Chris! I'll be checking in on your grow periodically to see how the Thai's are doing... I'm thinking I may plant some next year to make my own curry pastes. Cheers!

The germination tray on the left has some room left, so I planted 3 cells each of Fish Pepper from Trippa, the Macedonian Annuum from Nee and Hungarian Hot Wax from High Mowing Seeds.

Looking good. I'm hoping for less fight on the annuums than on the chinense for sure. Blizzard here tonight so I feel your pain. Hope for a normal winter so spring is back to normal too and not trying to frost after the 21st.

Good luck on your new plantings.

Moving right along, Rick! I LOL'd at Stefan's comment, above. ;) I'm pulling for the Spring weather for you!
Thanks Doc, I'm ready for spring too if it would just get here! Overall, we're not getting snow like we did when I was a kid... It's happening less often during the winter than it used to, but when it does, more falls at once and it melts quicker.

Thanks Bodeen. I hope all is well with you and you're cuddled up with someone warm tonight... ;) Good luck with your babies too... you'll probably get yours in the ground before I will so I'll be counting on you for some great pics of your plant-out!

I got a surprise half day off from work and thought I'd take advantage of it to plant the rest of my Annuums. I planted 15 cells of my favorite Gochu pepper, 6 cells of Urfa Biber, 6 cells of the white Hungarian stuffing pepper "Taltos" and 3 cells each of everything else.

i like your setup....how well do they get lights/?

Maybe you should show that to the Manzano seeds....sprout or you're out in the cold!
Thanks for the chuckle Shane, I can hear it in my mind's eye like an old war movie... <Cracked muttering...> Und vy vill you not grow... Answer!

Hi DeNNiZ
I have four 23 watt 5000k CFLs wired in series above each shelf. It's roughly equivalent to one 100 watt T5... just flattened and spread out a bit. I put the shelves behind our south-facing sliding glass door so they can get natural sunlight as well, but at this time of year that's just supplemental light... I have the CFLs running 16/8 off a timer. We have solar panels on our roof, but they're operating at a loss right now, so I see a $10 increase in our monthly electricity bill. As we get closer to the Equinox I expect our bill to drop as the solar panels take up more of the load.

Group shot of the Chinense chiles, standing on a chair this morning to get a good overhead shot...

It looks like the Douglah and Maya Red Hab are equally happy in airpots and Solo cups. The Yellow 7 and Jamaican Hot Chocolate seem to like the airpots better. Plants are in the same order in both rows, but larger air pruning pots take up more space in the near row. L to R they are... Douglah, Yellow 7, Jamaican Hot Chocolate, Maya Red.

Another shot from the side to show height...

Sweet Rick! So, advantage or no difference size wise. Is it my imagination or does the color look better across the board in the air pots? Maybe I'm just seeing things...they all look pretty fantastic!

Nope... I get that too. The color is better in the airpots with the possible exception of the Douglahs. They don't seem to give a d@#* about much of anything... dey gonna grow, and you'd bes' be gettin' out of de way Mon!

Downstairs with the Ajis and Annuums, color is great in Solo cups. Top shot of Kurtovska Kapia...

They've all grown up to at least 4 nodes, and all are starting side branching...

I was going to comment on the deep, rich colours too. I'm glad you have a picture with some in air pots side by side with the others because it really highlights the difference.

Upper grow room, cellar grow room...they don't seem to mind! Looks like they're getting all they need either way! I'm gonna have to go back to your plant out pics from last year and look at the difference. Seems I remember them being a little spindly looking...your annuums will be the ones to watch. Betting the difference will be HUGE!

Well I finally had the time to get through your entire glog.
Whew.
Loving the food pics!
I'm really interested to see the difference between the solo cups and airpots.
I was using solo's prior to moving to the airpots. It'll be great to see a side by side comparison.
You mentioned you were going to pot up to a larger size after the 1 liters... Which size were you lookin at?

Thanks guys, and welcome Ronin!

I'm not sure what size the new pots are but here's a pic of the two side by side...

The only thing I did different with the Annuums is I left them upstairs under lights for a couple of weeks before moving them downstairs, adding bonemeal and pelleted rock phosphate to the planting medium and a rotation between diluted GH RapidStart nutes, Neptune's Harvest seaweed extract and water. The whole idea was to really develop the roots with a good mix of Auxins, trace minerals and nutes. Last year's starts only got diluted seaweed extract and water at first, and a sprinkling of rock phosphate in March.
