outdoors The 2018 Hunt Is Nigh Upon Us!!

I've been hunting the exact same spot on the map for a number of years, the grass where my blind goes no longer grows there. I have 60 acres of family woods to wander, but this spot proves out every. Single. Year.

I invested in one of those Canuckdian trail cams this summer, mostly to catch a bear that a lot of folks have been sighting, but it also reinforces my reason for hunting the exact same plot of ground year after year:

The little redwood stools were placed there many years ago, when that maple tree was whole and the first year I picked this spot to fill a tag. I've since put my blind behind where this camera is strapped by about 12 feet.

So then, anyone else staking out their huntin' digs?

I just got back from checking my trail cameras. While checking on one I ran into a nice little 3x3 in velvet only about 30 yards from me. On the way out I ran into him a second time, again well within bow range. I was telling myself just my luck the day before archery opener. I got home and checked my dates, opener was today! I swore it did not open until Saturday. I was wrong. This is so my luck! I'll hit the spot about the same time tomorrow. Who knows. Good luck with your hunt.

That 4X4 keeps showing up, along with a lot of  does and first years.

I've never been a trophy hunter, it's all about the quality of table fare. After year three most bucks start getting sinewy from hard play and challenges from others.

This guy is probably safe. What with the traffic coming through....
