The Best Thing I Ever Ate

I know for a fact that some of the best eats on the planet come from NYC.

Anyone who denies it is a dang fool!

It only stands to reason that with all the ethnic foods and peoples in NYC somewhere in that town somebody is cranking out an authentic Cuban.

I think I need to make my own Cuban and post it this week.

Maybe like a sammich of the month 'thang. This month Cuban.

Next month reubensky.

After that peppers and snausage.

And for the record, I've eaten some outstanding fried bologna sammich's.

Do it!

And yeah I have a good one here at a Cuban joint. They do it just like I like it. But the humidity does factor in. It's what makes NY pizza good and FL pizza suck and vice versa for Cuban sandwiches.

SoFlo chime in.

how about bay scallops minutes fresh from the Laguna Madre sauted in butter and garlic.....

or fire roasted oysters from Acme oyster house in nawlins......

or or some Vietnamese grilled pork over rice noodles with fish sauce and pickled veggies.....

sooooo many good meals its hard to choose just 1

Best al pastor tacos, Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Just up the road from the main beach, like two blocks.

Nothing like a real live cuban making you a cuban sandwich in Miami (or even up here in C. FL).

For the record NY pizza isn't much better than FL... I spent a summer there... The street meat is better no doubt... Lots of interesting things for sale from peoples briefcases - and ice cream off a stone is better than you'd think... But all in all (maybe in part due to home state bias) I'm as happy or happier with anything I can get here in FL than I was with what was avail in NY city.

Also Philly cheesesteaks are better here than in philly... True story.

I guess the internet ate my last post... Any how, I agree that Cubans are better when cooked in miami or further south by an actual cuban.

Pizza is not better in NY... Nor are Philly cheese steaks better in philly...

Perhaps its some kind of homestate bias ;)

Street meat is good in NY though without a doubt. I never thought ice cream would be better off a stone either, but it is.

You went to the wrong pizza places here. Just like everywhere there is good food, and LOTS of bad food. When people hear "NY Pizza" they assume they step off the bus and get good pizza. Wrong. You have to know the places, and unfortunately, they are few and far between, but they are there, and the best... like coal ovens since 1905... places... and even newer joints.

"NY pizza sucks. I went to NY and had pizza." That's not how it works.

Street meat? I don't touch that stuff. Funny you liked it. Dirty water dogs, or kebabs?

A buddy of mine grew up in the upper east side, he was showing us around... He took us to "the best pizza place in NY".

If that was the best, then I'm happy with my local owner/operator places.... Gianni's for instance...

Its not that the pizza was bad - it was pretty good. But it was no better than the stuff I can get locally.

Milan Italy had good pizza though... I would say maybe some of the best I've ever eaten...

Everyone has their "best in NY" but not one is on the UES. Next time try, say, Lombardi's, or lemme know.

I reckon its time Dan.

THP's....

Best of New York thread.

That Hungry Cabbie Dude and Pickles.

Classic deli.

Dogs.

Foo Foo.

Pizza and Italian.

Other ethnic.

Beef. NYC may not be Texas for raising beef but they sho' nuff cook it h b and r.

We need a THP ALL THANG'S NYC!!

The best meal I ever ate was at the house of a former colleague. He is Portuguese, served in Mozambique in the late 1960s during their civil war where he learnt how to make the most delicious piri-piri shrimp I have ever had in my life. He wouldn't tell me what he put in it other than piri-piri peppers, a little beer, a little garlic and of course.... and that's where he would trail off. He would buy these mammoth shrimps, marinate them for I don't know how long and cooked them on scewers over an open fire. I asked his kids, his wife and they would just shrug and sigh. I've tried a hundred times in the past 10 years to replicate it and have never been able too. He's the reason I grow piri-piri peppers every year!

Best ever bbq brisket I ever ate.

Black's in Lockhart, TX.

Melt in your mouth smokey goodness.

Incredible would be the understatement of the year.

I'm guessing you never had one from Tony Luke's or D'Nicks. Pat's and Geno's while good, are more tourist traps than restaurants these days. Not dissing Tampa, I did have the best steak of my life there at a place called Charlie's, but Philly is still the home of the cheesesteak.

Just about everything I ate in Puerto Escondido Mexico was the best of type.

But the local coffee with an empenada from the extremely popular street vendor in the town square was as good as it gets.

BTW, Oro De Oaxaca mescal isn't half bad-------after 4 or 5 shots.

From Arturo's in Nuevo Progreso and deep fried frog legs, to ceviche in Cancun, and seared tuna and taco's in Puerto Vallarta, every thing I have ever eaten in Mexico has been stupifyingly good. Get away from the gringo/gabacho tourist joints and resorts, and you can't miss.

Mezcal and tequila sangria's are a good thing.

And if that doesnt work for ya come to CT and have pizza from Pepe's or Sally's true classics

The one and only Poochies. I almost always get the char cheeseburger, medium rare, sour pickle on the side, with mustard, grilled onions and sport peppers. Perfect onion rings too.

Visitor: whats the name of this bussiness?
Jon: Of the Burger Joint?
Visitor: yes
Jon: Its name is Burger Joint
Visitor: me and y friends at thp want to know why they charge 3.21$ for water?
Visitor: my*
Jon: That's an interesting question.
Jon: Let me know if you find out!
Visitor: you dont have the answer....?
Jon: Just kidding; the pricing is average for New York City
Jon: It's done that way so that when we ring it up with taxes, the totals tend to be whole numbers, so it's faster giving change
Visitor: oh ok thanks for you time
