The Pacific Northwest GLOG 2014...CLOSED FOR THE 2014 SEASON

Today launches The Pacific Northwest GLOG, geared towards growers from this region.  Since there appears to be disagreement on what states, and areas, actually comprise the Pacific Northwest, I will use a broad definition, in order to include more growers.  If anyone thinks the definition could be even more broad, it can always be changed.  Come one, come all.

Oregon
Washington
Alaska
Northern California
Idaho
Montana
Wyoming
British Columbia

I am from the Rogue Valley, in southern Oregon, so, I will begin with a couple of shots from my yard, which over looks the Rogue River.

Me, and my Cacho de Cabra, which stands at 4' tall.

Some non-chinenses.

Chinenses.

GRIF 9265.

I'm using the square foot gardening method.  Plants are getting close.  I like the appearance.

A weird cross.

MoA, Scotch Bonnet.  Can't wait for these.  I have 4 plants.

Weather is into the 90s today, and will hit 101F tomorrow.  It's funny the misconceptions people have about Oregon weather, in particular, southern Oregon.  Good luck to all.  I hope this Pacific Northwest GLOG will be a success!

How are you PNWers beating the heat, today?  It's 100F and rising on one side of the house here, and 90F on the river side, in the shade.  My wife, her mother, and the grandkids packed up this afternoon and headed for the Illinois River, without me...WIN!  I'm chuckling now because my wife told me I would "be lonely" here with just the dog to keep me company.  After 16 years of marriage, I guess she still doesn't know me that well.  Once they were safely down the road, I quickly switched over to survival/bachelor mode. (Note: I was a bachelor for 40 years).

First things first.

My "lonely" camp for the day.

It's the time of year for this on the Rogue River.  I'd rather be watching from above.

Oh yeah, I grilled a bratwurst on the Weber, and sauteed some Pimenta de Padron peppers and onions.  Added some mustard, my own Los Chiles Locos hot pepper sauce to the package.  Deschutes Twilight Ale for the libation.  Loneliness never felt so good!  Stay cool, guys, and, keep your plants watered!

We're having a really weird weather day up in Portland. Supposed to be hot, but instead we got muggy thunderstorm weather. Tuesday is the really hot day in the forecast now.

Gotta say, you're beating the heat in style!  I'm going to smoke a turkey breast and investigate some Fort George Vortex IPA myself.

I live for this kind of heat, although, I expect we will get hit with forest fires, inevitably. Never good, and always, many acres.

Aphids and mites have struck my plants. I think I will go with Azamax. I hear it's expensive, but, now isn't the time to be cheap. What would you use?

Depends on how much time you spend with your plants. If you're busy and can only tend to them occasionally then I would go with something that will wipe them out with one or two applications. Those products seem to have the most risk associated with them. If you're out there every night, a combo of 100% neem oil (1 tsp / qt) with a drop of dish soap will do really well, but you'll have do it a few times. Simply spraying them off the leaves with water goes a long way as well, but that's a lot of work. At the same time, growing exotic peppers in the Northwest won't always be easy.

I'm home from work every night around midnight.  I'd be spraying in the dark, but I will still have some sort of light to work under.  Maybe Neem oil is the way I should go.  It's sure popular.  I guess I could use Coco Wet as the wetting agent?

I've never used a wetting agent but I've never had bad aphid problems either...Just make sure you don't put need oil on your plants when it's full sun and hot out. I'd do it at night or early morning if you can.

I was advised by the guys at the local hydro/canna*is shop that Neem oil would not be a good choice since I already have an infestation. They suggested I alternate between pyrethrin, and permethrin every 3 days. Not sure for how long, though. I need to ask them.

In terms of aphids the best thing for them is ladybugs, or ladybug larva. I've seen the work they do and get a bit of enjoyment out of seeing the aphids get devoured.

I know I'll get crucified by those preaching Orgaaaaaaaaanic, but I've also used Sevin to get rid of harsh infestations when all the hippy dippy home remedies did more harm to my plants than the aphids. This was used when I couldn't get ladybugs. Multiple applications of dish soap, garlic, olive oil, orange rind etc. Don't work.

Remember that picture I posted of that hop leaf with the hundreds of aphids on it? After one application of neem oil they were all dead and gone. I just wanted to share my limited experience with neem oil. I'm impressed so far...

An up date the frets I am using So far just the Kangaroots Next week I will start Grow Big now. I will use Kangaroots once a week for a bit, and will add the Microbrew here soon as well.

So here is a twist to my pepper garden.  I told everyone that my wife bought me a Chia Master Gardener set to start with.  One of the four packs of seeds was supposed to be Jalapeno's but this is what is growing.  Any ideas?

OK just got my worm and Bat Poo for my last transplant to 3 gal pot's in 3-4 weeks. At that point I will do a new soil HF and OF with amendments. I also picked up some FF Microbrew and Superthrive. Only thing left is some Bone meal and the soil.. Does anyone here add Poo to the top of the soil ?

Looking good!  Are those plants you are going to over winter?  I'm designing a indoor grow area in my crawlspace that I hope to get done before the fall.  I'll overwinter 10+ plants in there, but need to work on airflow and temperature control details.  I was going to buy big bloom and the other FF products, but I'm not sure if it is needed.  I'm using Age Old Organics and it works really well.  You don't need a "grow" and "bloom" fert with peppers from what I'm told.

Doesn't look like a jalapeno to me.  I was in my garden and it actually looks like one of my Big Jim peppers.  Take a look.

Neem works great.  I used neem with Py on my fruit trees all the time.
A quick update of my peppers.  They are pretty happy.  I do have a question/ID near the bottom of the post I could use help with.

The plant on the right and the pictures that follow are a mystery seed from Ajijoe.  Can anyone let me know what it looks like?

NO there not really a grow and bloom fert.. They both have different nutes and numbers. I have only used the kangaroots thus far. Now an hour ago i mixed bat guano and worm casting and dumped it on top then watered. They are a bit far from the light still but they will all be over wintered. They might get out side for a month. lol.

FGpepperguy...I don't know myself what they could be seeing as I just started growing peppers but the third pic down looks like a Pepperoncini before being pickled.
