Topping makes me nervous....

They will live.
Pepper plants can take a lot of abuse.
I broke a main stem near the bottom......wrapped it in duct tape.

It lived and produced.

Whip them, beat them, chop them, they survive.

Over water them once, however---------

I topped my Scotch Bonnet early in the season but sure am glad I did. Huge bush!

Devil's advocate checking in, I know this may be heresy here, but my lurkings in the MJ forums suggest that while yes you get more "buds", you stunt the fruit. In the end it's a wash. Bushy plant with many smaller fruit. They do it primarily because of indoor space height constraints. Does this not translate to peppers as well? I'm not trying to cause trouble here, I just genuinely want to know from some experienced pepper peeps.
