Trent's 2015 Grow Log (potting soil probs solved!)

Well, off to an early start this year.

I'm planting left over seeds from last year, to start, so I'm putting them in a little early just in case some don't pop.

Sorting last year's stash I kept tucked away from Pepperlover

And the first tray of 2015

I didn't plant any Nagas this year. Probably won't. Not doing reapers again, have plenty of heat in the brown morugas, brain strains, and barrackpores.

The next tray I do will be the rest of the non-annuums in a couple weeks, plus a replant of anything that hasn't popped by then.

Shooting for about 80 plants in the ground this year.

One full row of annuums, 5 jalapeno plants, 10 cayenne plants (never seem to grow enough of that!). 15

4 1/2 rows of Chinense, 10 per row. 45

1 1/2 rows of mixed pube/fructs/baccatum 15

Rock Garden did surprisingly well last year - so another dozen in there. GREAT big plants in the shade, not a lot of pods, though, and they took their damn sweet time ripening in the shade. So I'll probably put more annuums up there than I did last year (faster growing cycle) 12

Will reuse the 30x 5 gallon cloth pots one more time.. those did pretty good! Smaller plants, smaller pods, but they were all tasty. :)  30

Which brings the total planned grow to 117 peppers.

Fewer than last year, but I'm saving some room to grow some watermelons this year, or die trying!

(Cutting out one full row of peppers; moving the beans up, to clear room for melons.)

Anyway, here's to 2015!

All sorts of red flags have gone off in my head but my wife is dead set on moving to town. :(

Well you're already sunk if your wife is dead set on it. Might as well use the next 6 weeks getting used to the idea that you're going to be dumping 50K+ into upgrades and repairs.

I wouldn't abate the asbestos though. That can get expensive and If you don't touch it, it isn't dangerous.

Yeah that asbestos is in much better shape than any other house I've lived in with asbestos. And, it still works damn good at it's job! :)

In one rental house we were in, the shit was flat out disintegrating.  In this house it's frayed slightly around the very ends of the pipes it's wrapped around, but otherwise looks like it did brand new. Must have been a good humidity level to preserve it in the basement.  Not too wet, not too dry..

2 hour walkthrough scheduled Monday. I'm bringing along an electrical engineer and a professional home inspector to go over things for 2 hours.

Then .. I guess I'll make an offer. :(

It looks beautiful, the big property with all the field and trees.... and the house too. And it's big. How are the kids feeling about moving?

The kids and wife are the ones who want to move! They all said they hate living out in the country. Kids want to be closer to their friends, wife wants to be closer to the stores and the school, as she's always running back & forth to the school with all the extracurricular activities the kids are in.

I'm the only stubborn bastard who likes it out here where we live. But I'm way outnumbered! :)

Our walkthrough was moved to this Friday; the real estate lady's sister-in-law died and the funeral was set for the same time that our walkthrough was supposed to be, today...

Think you will be able to handle big city life?  Good luck with the house if you end up getting it.

LOL Big city.. "moving to town" means moving out of the country to a town of population 1800. There's not even delivery or fast food. :)

But at least you have casey's.  Been a while since I been through there so can't remember much.  My town isn't much better, but has enough to get by.  Good luck managing the garden through a move if it ends up happening.  Last time we moved, had it planned well ahead so I had already turn old garden into lawn by the time we moved.  Then in new house couldn't find a good spot for years due to all kinds of issues.  Looks like your new place has plenty of promising land though.

Casey's pizza gives me gut cramps. Kids seem to like it well enough, though. :)

There's a couple of pretty good restaurants in town though.

Shouldn't be too hard to find a suitable place to put a garden there, but a lot of other stuff would have to be planned out first. Also.. the "to do" list on this house would be a mile long... so I'd have to budget my time and that would take a toll on hobbies.

So... I went down last night to check the watering needs of the plants, and found about a half dozen of them are flowering...

I tried to pop a few out of the 3.5" pots to see how rootbound they are but that wasn't happening without a fight! The four I tried were disagreeable to the idea.. so I decided not to disturb them yet.

It's time to get a fan on them, they need air circulation. I haven't put one on them yet, didn't seem to need it, but now that solid canopy has formed they're having trouble exhausting moisture.

Well I got the indoors thinned out some today. This is what is left inside;

9nxeD8ph.png

Half were transplanted over to 1 gal and moved outside to the north side of the house. They were rootbound pretty good in those 3 1/2" pots.

qjeBkX5h.png

They're looking decent enough; the 1/2 tsp per gal of 0-12-12 has been doing them well, even if the size of their pots were holding them back some.

Chili de Arbol and many other annuums are already flowering

We close on the new house on May 25, so this summer will be busy with construction, moving, etc...

Since we need to prep our current house for sale this summer I am going to till the garden, level it, and plant grass seed. :(

Going to be painful to say goodbye to my old dirt patch that I've spent so much of my time in.

But! There's a bigger dirt patch waiting for next year....

My *entire* grow will end up being a container grow this year.

3.5" pot to 1 gal pot to 5 gal cloth so I can transport them easily

going to be a different grow for sure!!!

Nice looking plants, I think they'll be just fine in containers. Congrats on the new house and the bigger dirt patch for next growing seasons! You'll be busy for sure.

Why would you destroy the current garden??? Maybe the new owner would love the already prepared garden for his plants... or he/she can level it up then... don't bother, I know I wouldn't. Whoever will buy your property will sure enjoy the nature and growing...

Good luck with the grow! It's gonna be fine you'll see....

The current garden is in the front yard so removing it is more of an aesthetic thing. :)

"Detracts from curb appeal" as my wife would say.

Well, I just read the entire glog.  Amazing job so far!

And here I thought I might be addicted to growing peppers with only 8.   :P

I'm looking forward to following this.
