Trindad Scorpion on Martha Stewart Show

For any of you that may have missed Martha's show last week, Dave De Witt was one of her guests, and was discussing different peppers on the show.

The first one that was discussed though, was the Trinidad Scorpion, which Dave believes is the hottest pepper in the world.

Hey I call BS! I searched for three weekends and could not find a single farmer growing scorpions in Las Cruces. LOL I guess he meant Dr. Bosland was growing them in Las Cruces for submission to The Guinness Book of World Records. I wish Martha had cut open the Scorpion…

Jim Duffy and Dave DeWitt have got someone growing them for them. Bosland has nothing to do with this one. They are just submitting it into the Guinness Records now.

I had Bosland on my mind because when they held up Dave’s new book in the beginning of the show the cover says "by Dave Dewitt and Paul Bosland" Funny though... I was serious about actually searching for 3 weekends in Las Cruces. I live about 30 Minutes from Las Cruces in El Paso. I visited about 20 chile farms last August trying to find anyone growing or someone who knew someone growing superhots. Only one had tried growing bhut jolokias on a small test plot and said it was a disaster. Low yield and hi maintenance compared to green chile. They said they would not waist their time again. Only place I found them growing was at the CPI farm but of course those were not for sale. If I win the lottery I am buying a small ranch in Hatch and growing superhots.... dam the lack of profitability! LOL

I borrowed that book from the library and ended up keeping it for nine weeks...I renewed it twice.

It was a decent book, but I honestly found it to be outdated by about three or four years.

I was a little disappointed that there was no mention of either 7 Pod/Pots or Trinidad Scorpions, in it at all, and I checked the index in the back looking for them.

There was a brief mention of Bhut Jolokia, and the testing of it that Dr. Paul Bosland did with it.

I think my wife was trying to find out how I felt about the book as a possible Christmas gift, but I told her that the real up to date info was best found on the net.

So I didn't get it for Christmas, but maybe when a newer book comes out that has the Trinidad Superhots in it, I might consider that one for a reference book.

I have two copies of the book. I bought one signed by Dewitt and Bosland, and my wife gave me the other for Christmas this year. I'm willing to regift the unsigned one to anyone that wants a copy and will front the shipping cost. PM me if you are interested.
 
I would love to see Martha do a Neil demo on the Trinidad Scorpion.
How many shade of red can you do Martha? I would play it over and over.

Jim has been telling me for a while that the scorpions are in fact the world's hottest pepper. He had some TS Morouga Reds test at 1.4 mil units.

After Martha said that she had had a run in with a Habanero one night and it sounded like the Hab had won that go-round, it wasn't too likely she would be stepping up a few weight classes to challenge a Scorp...although I would have liked to have see her try.

I know both Judy and Neil are selling the TS Morouga Blend, but I haven't seen a lot of venders selling the the TS Morouga Reds.

I wonder how the TS Butch T, TS Morouga Red and TS Morouga Blend would compare with one another heat-wise.

i agree doug. i found the book to be mildly interesting but severly lacking info. i bought it from one of the million catalogs i get every year. i saw boslands' name on it and figured it would be worth a look. i'm not dissapointed with the purchase but there is way more current info in this website than the book.

Ed, just after I found this site, I thought I would try and find a good chile reference book and since this book was fairly new, I thought I'd check it out.

I asked at the local library if it was available and after a few weeks they brought it in from another branch.

There was some info of interest in the book, but I realized that most of my chile pepper knowledge has been garnered right here on this site...a lot of it from reading through the threads that are posted here.

"Trinidad scorpion Morouga blend" and "Trinidad scorpion Morouga Reds" are the same are they not? Its the "Morouga(Moruga) reds" that are different from my experience
