Trinidad Scorpion Appreciation Grow Event 2010

I did that tonight actuallyChililover. I made the trek into town in the middle of hell, i mean ice all over the place. LOL I stopped by the local greenhouse and picked up a better soil/mix that they recommended. Lots of richness in it, minimal garbage and plenty of perilite, they seem happy little scorpions so far, and they have grown in the few days since the last pic, here they are...

And here are the group from AJ, 3 of 5 so far, I am hoping for 100% germination. I cut the peat puck gauze off them and dropped them in dixie cups that have 3 drainage holes in them...

great looking plants guys...

OK, OK, I know I been slackin' but, I promise before the week is over, I will update the spreadsheet and post it....

OK, not really much to show. But here goes:

Barrackpore 7 to the left, Trinidad Scorpion in the 5 inch pot to the right. I trimmed the lower leaves the day before I was admitted to the hospital last week and just left them unattenden by the window for a week - that is why the B7 looks like a boomerang.

The Scorpion seems to kind of like it at least.

These where planted in late october/early november. I used to keep fairly detailed records but came to the conclusion that I really can't draw any conclusions from it because I grow too few plants each year and have too many variables I can't controll. I'm much less anal now;)

I performed surgery on one of my Trinidad Scorpions yesterday. It wouldnt take its hat off for me so I removed it with a pair of dull scissors. it already had a little sprout on it that looked like it was trying to grow its first true leaf so I decided it was time to remove the hat.

Its still alive this morning

good deal Mjd...

I think about all of my scorpions that are going to germinate, have done so...I have 60 out of 72 that have popped the surface since I planted them 29 January...so thats 12 days...I will settle for a 83% germination rate since I only planned for 70%....they are being kept at about 82-86F with a fan set on WFO for 30 minutes twice a day...they like it...still getting light 24/7 and will continue for about another 4 or 5 weeks...then I will switch to 16/8...just had their first feeding yesterday...will get an epsom salt spritz later today

thanks Nova (and good morning to you too)....

the 24/7 for 5 weeks and then 20/4 comes from this scholarly paper on tomatos and sweet peppers...figuring sweet peppers are in the genus capsicum it wouldn't be too far off for different species...

A lot of new growth on that plant MrArboc; it'll be bushy soon. Looking out your window gave me a case of the shivers.

That's a lot of Scorps AJ. :)

It's better now. -19 C and sunny. The white snow makes it really bright - if it wasn't for the plants I'd close my blinds:)

how long of an outside grow season do you have Mr. Arboc?

If I bring them inside each night the outdoor season lasts from mid-may to late september and perhaps a few good days in october. It's usually frost-free from early june into september. But two years ago we got a 4-5 cm of snow om june 10, and we might get frost in august...

When I win the lottery I will buy a house and build a heated greenhouse! (Or move south.) I'm just happy that I'm moving on april 1st so I have room for my plants indoors during the nights;)

I had a fatalii pop up yesterday that I had started on Jan 20th. I guess thats almost 3 weeks. I wondered about your light schedule. I have been doing 18/6 since the first little hook showed up. I was not sure if 24 hours on was a good thing or not.

You're much further north but you appear to have the same outdoor season as I do although I've only had frost June 8th, no snow

True - we have the Gulf stream that keeps us fairly warm.

Ah, the Gulf Stream...

...Keeps most of the heavy snow out of the UK as well. :)

On the average, how long do you guys wait for seeds to germinate before giving up on the pellets?

until you see the roots growing out of the bottom of the container....~ 6 weeks or so
