Trippaul Threat (PdN x BMJ) Community Grow

This is a dedicated grow log for Tristen's awesome cross, which I
have been growing out since 2014.  I'll start with a bit of history and
some photos documenting what's happened so far.

In January of 2014, Tristen (Trippa) sent me a little care package of seeds.
In the package were two generations of a cross he had made, which he just
called 'Mystery Cross, F1' and 'Mystery Cross, F2'.

Here's Trippa's Mystery Cross seedlings in February of 2014:

Both generations showing the purple foliage characteristic since the beginning.

Up close look at Trippa's Mystery Crosses, F1 and F2.  Both culled to a single
plant after the photo taken, so I only had one plant of each generation:

For Sawyer...

These are the whole dried 6th generation white pods.

I have 2 quarts of split and de-seeded pods,
as well as another quart of whole dried pods,
purple and white. At low temp. the violet
shading holds well.  The above should have
been dried at a lower temp.

in my plants, the pods range from 2 to 21/2 inches.
Over 21/2 is not too unusual. 3 inches or more unusual,
but it happens. The pods in my pics on this thread last
season are all 21/2 inches or more, and the source of the
seed I sent out. 5/8 to 1 inch wide is the norm.

Thanks for your interest, John!

Very nice. Those look a little larger than mine were.
That's a pint jar by the way, not a quart.
Just for accurate comparison, John!

Ah, thanks for the clarification. Still bigger, I think, but not so much.
Forgot to mention they were the seed pods for
the F7W, so all 21/2 inches or more.

Oh, yeah, right; I should have known that. So some stay purple when ripe? Or is it that some start out white and stay that way? Sorry to be so dense about this. I know it's covered in this thread somewhere, but 50 pages is a bit much to scan.

Yeah, John. All pods start out a dark purple. At ripening
time they go through shades of violet, lime green or
green, yellow, shading to white. sometimes with violet
shading. The violet strain started with a plant that produced
very purple ripe pods. I kept the strain going into the F6 and
F7 grows. The White variety is an unbroken white pod line
going back to F3.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I'll label mine (OP) F7W. I'll try to isolate a few plants this year, and rogue out any that don't behave.

Sounds good, John.  The seed should be fairly well
isolated since the F7 were the only plants besides the
F5 (50' away) in my grow last season. The F7 will be
isolated this season with netting, with the idea of
producing a batch of high quality isolated seventh
generation seed.

I meant the seeds I saved from pods from my F6 plant. I didn't see much pollinator activity last year, but the plant was pretty close to some other varieties.

A back cross to the F5 wouldn't really be a bad thing either would it?
As consistent as the variety has been since F3,
I wouldn't be surprised to see minimal effect from
that back crossing. But who knows. Might be fun
for someone to try that. I have some more F5 seed,
I think.

Both the new F7 seedlings enjoying their purpleness.
Andys isolated F7W is one healthy plant. The F7 from
the purple/violet double pod stands in its shadow:

The four F7W are going to take over the garage
grow table. The F5 get a 4 x4 T5HO of their own
on the workbench. Sorry about the water bottles,
I was too lazy to move them for the pic. Will get a
better pic of the F7 tomorrow.

F5 branching out nicely. The other F5, not so much:

OK I am totally confused by all the generational talk.  Someone started with a PdN and a BMJ and cross-pollinated them.  Saved the seeds, grew the seeds, those were the F1 plants, right?  First generation.  The F1 plants fruited - theoretically they should all have been identical at this stage.  Saved the seeds, grew the seeds so those became the F2 plants, which are likely to have shown a lot of variation due to the various combinations of the original plants and dominant and recessive genes.  So someone will have chosen the F2 plants showing the most desirable characteristics and saved the seed from those.  Grew those seeds on to give the F3 plants.  I really hope that is how you have been doing it.

I'm in for this year - I have three seedlings, seeds came from Heefy (thanks!) from his white-podded plant.  There's a photo of the seedlings on my own glog.

The F1 pods were red, the F2 pods yellow, and the white pods started in the f3 generation. It has been pretty stable ever since, except for the violet/purple pods that showed up in the F5 generation. I have been selecting for the white pods strain of the cross.  Light violet/purple shading has always been there, but pods that ripen while still violet is a recent development.

You've got it right, Liz. Here's the summary
from earlier in the thread.

Your F7 really look great!

 Alright! the 1000th post in this thread

:metal: Thanks to everyone contributing to this effort.
The F7 grow is shaping up to be awesome!
