Uknow 2018 - The Heat is On!

Hey all!

Just a quick sneak peak. I planned on dirt day being January 1st this year, but it ended up being today (yesterday), January 18th. Still about 2 weeks earlier than my first set last year. As long as I don't have any major setbacks like last season, I should crush it this year! *Knock on wood*

So I finally got the grow box/tent, lights and heat mat set up in my unfinished rec room downstairs of the new house. The room is about 6' x 9'. Had to cut about 4 inches off one side of my table, it's a tight fit, but I didn't want to go lengthwise, lol.

I planted 4 trays of Chinense only so far. Heat mat is set to 83f. I learned my lesson last year with planting Annuum's and baccatum's too early. Not doing that again! I'll wait at least another month before I start them.

I didn't put together my official grow list yet, but you can see most of the varieties in the pics. Mostly the same as last year, I didn't order any new seeds. I'm missing a few varieties though due to not getting any pods from a few that the deer mowed down last season. (I'm looking for Chocolate Bhut, JPGS and a couple others if anyone wants to trade some seeds)

Also, of the 22 plants I tried to overwinter, 10 survived the aphids and neglect from me. Only watered twice since October, oops, haha. 5 I think have some life left in them, and 7 were completely toast. I'll get a list of the survivors tomorrow when I do my grow list.

Lol. No doubt you're going to have a great year, too many good vibes here brotha! Your plants look super happy and healthy
Thanks! I have a good feeling about this year also.

Below is an example of what I meant when I said earlier that the cells explode and die and the leaves will yellow and fall off eventually. This just happened overnight. Same orange Fatali I posted a pic of last night.

Notice all the dead spots now...

I had one more Reaper seed pop. It's the only seed to germ from the single ripe pod I got last season from the Reaper seeds I originally got from THSC, took 32 days... But of course it's got helmet head, lol. I managed to get the outer shell off, but that inside sleeve is still stuck on the cotys. They don't look fully developed yet, so I'll leave it be until I see them green and starting to make their way out.

Also had one each from my resow of CPR and THSC Chocolate Scorpion pop today. The CPR seedling is super tiny, like not even a half inch tall and cotys are maybe an 1/8th inch long.

So that means the only thing I got skunked on this season was my single Moruga Scorp seed I had, but I didn't expect that one to sprout anyway, so no big deal there.

Have a good night all!

Thanks Ryan.

Yeah, edema doesn't go away once the leaves have it, I dealt with it pretty bad last season and swore to avoid it this season. Generally those leaves will yellow and fall off later once the cells die. My new growth looks good and pots have been that dry for a couple days now, so it was definitely my over watering at the time of pot up, with the plants just being too small.

I remember now last year when I experimented with going straight from seed cells to #1 pots, I barely watered them at all. Wish I had remembered that this year. Oh well, the damage is done to the old growth, nothing I can do to fix that. New growth looks good so it's onward and upward!

(Edit: I do also go by feel and weight of each pot, however when I'm so affraid to over water and only giving them 3oz, it barely changes the weight of the pot, lol.)

Also, here is the mix I'm using, and I added 30% perlite to it also. It definitely has peat in it. What's a good mix to use or make at home?

I had edema last season on several plants last season....they were all indoor under hid's and in promix.

while almost all grew out of the edema by plant out 2-3 couldn't shake it.

looking at pics above that soil is just way to dry no matter what the issue is.

I had it show up on a couple plants while germinating in the rockwool this season but I am avoiding the promix and went baxk to fox farms ocean forest for their first pots.

I have not seen any more edema since they went into soil.

Still your grow and plants look pretty good....I wouldn't be all to concerned just yet.

Thanks Masher. I think I may try some Fox Farm for my next batch I pot up.

I'd really like to try making my own mix from scratch, but everyone online does something different, so it's hard to decide which way to go.

Quick update. Checked every pot one by one on Friday night and bottom watered with 2 to 3oz depending on if they still had some moisture in the bottom or not.

They've perked up and noticeably grown over the last 2 days.

I've also lost 3 seedlings in the seed cells that just shriveled up and died, maybe lack of water. With the big fan running now, the seedlings still in cells dry out daily.

Here's some pics.

I have the same issue with my seedlings, I've lost a few here and there due to a cell drying out faster than the others. Now that the fans are running it's hard to keep them all happy. I've pretty much got them settled in to an "every other day soak" now of 40oz water per tray, and it seems to be working out pretty good.

Last time I watered the seedling trays it took over 15 gallons of water at 40oz per tray. Too frigging many trays now. Up to 35. Well, WAS up to 35. I have 6 of them gone now that I transplanted some up to 4". So only 29 trays to keep an eye on now. Plus two 8 foot tables full of 4" pots.... each with various size plants that all will want watered on different frigging schedules... grr.

Hey, think that as a form of exercise. You can eat like a horse, but you will never get fat by just doing your "hobby" as a chili grower.

Keep it going ;)
Thanks guys! I'm outta town again for work this week, hopefully the fiancee can keep em going while I'm out!

I did set up my netcams before I left so I can keep an eye on them and the temp/humidity. I left the tent door open though so I shouldn't have any temp issues. Also set up a timer for the large fan so it comes on with the lights and runs for an hour after the lights turn off.

Here's a couple pics from the net cams!

Hey all, it's been a bit, I've been pretty busy lately. Things are going well still.

Bottom watered on Feb 23rd with 2 to 3oz and didn't water again until they started to wilt, which was the 4th and I watered yesterday the 5th with 2oz on bottom and 1oz on top, plus I sprayed the leaves and killed the lights to avoid any burn. So they made it 10 days before really wilting significantly. That seems way too long for barely giving them any water. This potting mix holds water way too long. I don't know what to do, but I need to try something different with my next batch. Maybe Coco or something. In my mind, the more often I can water them, the more nutes they are getting, right?

Aside from the never ending water battle, I started my jalapenos, Aji Pineapple, Blue Christmas and Fildaga Preto on Feb 24th. I forgot about them and a few sprouted in the dark and got a bit leggy, oh well, the rest are ok still.

I started getting some ready to give away, just haven't had time yet, but you can tell it's starting to affect them, some are getting a bit yellow on the older leaves.

Istill need to pick and pot up my keepers of the extra varieties from Jedi and Genetikx.

OW's are getting lots of new growth. Only 5 remaining... Lol. But for sure my 7 Pot Bubblegum, T. Scorp Butch T. and BrainStrain are going to make it since they all have a bunch of new growth. Up in the air still are a Purple Naga Viper and a Reaper.

Here's some pics.

I thought I had my watering figured out, then the other day I had the bright idea to top water the fish ferts in, now a couple of my nicer plants got all curly on me.

I really need to get a camera set up like that, my wife is gonna have to watch mine at least once

The more I look at it, the more I like your grow room and pot up process.  The grow area must be huge.  And going from your seedlings trays to #1 pots is great. Your plants will be huge when it comes time for plant out.  Excellent job!

Hey dude, some really nice work there!

Me, I like it when I have long periods between having to water ;) I just make sure I keep the nutes flowing; as long as the pots are heavy they have the food....

They'll grow into those pots soon enough and with transpiration will require watering more often; which equates to mo work :shh:

Haha, this is probably true! Thanks for the kind words, Devv. Hope all is going smoothly for you this far!
