Uknow 2018 - The Heat is On!

Hey all!

Just a quick sneak peak. I planned on dirt day being January 1st this year, but it ended up being today (yesterday), January 18th. Still about 2 weeks earlier than my first set last year. As long as I don't have any major setbacks like last season, I should crush it this year! *Knock on wood*

So I finally got the grow box/tent, lights and heat mat set up in my unfinished rec room downstairs of the new house. The room is about 6' x 9'. Had to cut about 4 inches off one side of my table, it's a tight fit, but I didn't want to go lengthwise, lol.

I planted 4 trays of Chinense only so far. Heat mat is set to 83f. I learned my lesson last year with planting Annuum's and baccatum's too early. Not doing that again! I'll wait at least another month before I start them.

I didn't put together my official grow list yet, but you can see most of the varieties in the pics. Mostly the same as last year, I didn't order any new seeds. I'm missing a few varieties though due to not getting any pods from a few that the deer mowed down last season. (I'm looking for Chocolate Bhut, JPGS and a couple others if anyone wants to trade some seeds)

Also, of the 22 plants I tried to overwinter, 10 survived the aphids and neglect from me. Only watered twice since October, oops, haha. 5 I think have some life left in them, and 7 were completely toast. I'll get a list of the survivors tomorrow when I do my grow list.

The more I look at it, the more I like your grow room and pot up process.  The grow area must be huge.  And going from your seedlings trays to #1 pots is great. Your plants will be huge when it comes time for plant out.  Excellent job!
Thanks! Other than my bit of edema, everything is going much, much better than last season. My grow room is only 6ft x 9ft, if I remember right. I'm running out of room quickly, but once I get rid of my extras, I'll be in much better shape as far as room goes.

I thought I had my watering figured out, then the other day I had the bright idea to top water the fish ferts in, now a couple of my nicer plants got all curly on me.

I really need to get a camera set up like that, my wife is gonna have to watch mine at least once
Yeah the camera's help for sure when I'm gone. She did underwater the back two trays a bit while I was gone so I lost 6 or 7 seedlings, but nothing I didn't already have at least 2 potted up of, just the spares.

I'll be gone again next week, but this time I'm going to just have her dump 1 quart in each tray to bottom water them daily. That should solve it. She was using the sprayer last time and didn't spray them enough.

Guess what song come on the radio yesterday on my way home from work lol.  Plants look good.  Where is your setup located in your house?  Looks warm.
My house is a bi-level. My setup is in an unfinished room downstairs.

Coldest it gets is about 66 with the oscillating fan blowing on them and the door open.

If I turn the fans off and door still open, it stays about 70 in the tent.

If I close the tent door to about 10 inches open on the bottom of it and just have it propped open on the 8 inch fan (running), it'll stay around 75 to 77 in the tent.

Door closed and with only the small fans inside the tent, it'll get 90+

Wow that's really cool what a grow! Did you make the rack? What are its dimensions? Low buck?? That's what I'm about tents are expensive at my current $ level. I like it!

After the lights and all materials, I still have about $300 into it. I have the specs and details listed in an earlier post. I think it's somewhere around posts 20 and 40 something.

Hey everyone, it's been a couple weeks. I finally have all my keepers for the season potted up. Just need to give away the extras and then it'll just be watering and normal maintenance for the rest of the season.

I think my early edema was due to humidity levels more than my initial over-watering at pot up. I've been leaving the tent door open and that seems to have helped quite a bit. New growth is all good. Last time I was gone for work, my fiancee over-watered everything (time before that she underwatered, lol) and I came home to 1/4" of water in the bottom of all the trays. I drained them all as soon as I got home, but the funny thing is none of them got any edema from that. Which is why I think the high humidity with the tent door closed was a big factor originally. The ones in trays also all exploded in growth after that, so I think they actually needed more water than I was giving them, but less humidity to avoid the edema.

I have almost 4 trays of extra plants still, about 250 plants I think. A couple people I normally give plants to backed out this year. Oh well, I'll just give them to others or try and sell them.

Hey man I hear you I'm approaching that mark myself already and still need more! Each time ya upgrade ya wanna upgrade more and optimize even better! At least it's a positive addictive hobby! The self gratification and pride when you see them leaves just glossing.. Nothing like it lol!

Also.. Is that mylar you used to make the chamber/tent-and if so does it take to folding? Was thinking of adding that as an interior backing to my shower curtain opening for mine if I can move it back and forth without fail. Also-those the #1 pots you were speaking of?

Yeah, that's mylar blankets stuck to cardboard with double sided tape to make it rigid. I used just mylar before taped to the frame, but it flops around in the wind from the fans creating noise and it rips if you look at it the wrong way. Now, with it stuck to the cardboard, no noise and no rips.

As far as folding, my door folds open and it's on there also, never had any issues.

Hmm... I'm wondering if maybe the panda film or something else would be better since the curtain I have slides and I don't really have an option to have a door as the space is too small to have something swing open. Unless perhaps there is a material that has mylar attached to something flexible or some other reflective material that can fold without getting wrecked

Yeah I plan on eventually going to actual grown tent material with a door that zips open and I can roll up to the top like tent doors.

Yeah I hear you man I'm in the same boat... But it's always a work in progress right, got to start somewhere!

Man, I'm in Scottsdale, AZ for work this week. Got in to Phoenix late last night. I've been here a few times now and everytime I come back, I want to stay forever more and more! Lol. The weather here is beautiful, landscape is awesome.

I don't have very good pics, just standing outside the resort (Fairmont Princess), but I love this place.

It also could just be that it's 20f and snowing at home...

Until mid summer.. then you'll be glad to home!

Mom just moved from Az.., about an hour from Vegas. Just brutal there in the summer, and the winds....

I'm on the desert fringes here in South Tejas, and will take that any day over Az. But that's me. At least we have seasons and rain

Regarding mylar:

Don't pay for mylar, go to the dollar store and buy the mylar wrapping "paper". A dollar for a 4' roll. Just saying, I use a staple gun to attach it. ;)

Alright, time for a proper update! It's been a hot minute since the last one.

I have my watering dialed in to about every 4 days (about when they start wilting) with 5oz or so per plant for the larger plants. Still dealing with some edema. Even the smaller plants in the new Pro-Mix HP that only get about 3oz as needed, are getting some edema.

At this point, there is nothing else I can do to help it. At the 4 to 5 day mark the plants are literally shriveling up, so I can't water any less or wait any longer. My humidity stays around 30-33%. It is what it is.

I was bumping my ferts up every other watering. Initially I was at 5ml/gallon for the first month or so and over a few weeks gradually went up to 10ml/gallon. I think I have some fertilizer burn, so I backed it back down to 5ml/gallon now and I'll leave it there for a while yet, maybe push it to 7.5ml end of this month.

Here's some pics!

I'll hop on the PC and label all the pics in a bit.

looking good!

I had the same edema as the plants and pots got larger. The dang room, 24x8 was turning into a petri dish from all the plants; mold on the windows..LOL

I guess I need to find a way to ventilate it....mo work ;)

you're killing it, so keep up the good work!
