Uknow's 2019 - Less is More!

Hey all!

I'm back for another season! I'm about a month behind last year's schedule, but still plenty of time since I don't plant out til the first week of June. I think last year I started almost 500 or 600 seeds of around 50 varieties??? This year, I finally cut back, lol. Only did two trays, 144 cells total of 14 different varieties. I'm only planning on keeping 56 plants max, that's what my tent fits in 1 gal (6") nursery pots. However, I'll be keeping 4 to 6 of each variety, instead of only 2of each like last year, so that's where the less is more part comes in! The rest will be given away to friends and family.

Here's the pics...

For anyone new wondering about my setup, here are the details:

Homemade grow tent - 50" wide x 38" deep x 48" tall.

Lighting - 6 twin tube T8 shop lights (12 bulbs total) mounted together as one unit. with Sylvania Octron FO32/865/XP bulbs. 384 watts total with 34,200 Lumens. I'd like to upgrade this to a COB LED setup soon, probably the Optic 4 XL.

Heat mat - 48"x24". I use this one even when not starting 4 trays, because it's a more consistent temperature throughout the mat, vs smaller single tray mats (which I have a few) that get hot in the middle but the outside edges are still cool.

Here's a pic of the timers and stuff on the side of the tent:

Hopefully it's a great season this year!

Best of luck to everyone!

Wow, things are really growing there, uknow! Those
are some healthy looking leaves on those plants. It
is always cool when the plants grow into those leaves.
Sort of like a puppy!

That is a very professional looking system you have there. Plants look good. I'm considering moving into 10 gallon pots myself but wasn't sure if the 15 gallon size was worth the expense.
If you want some inexpensive 15 gallon or bigger containers, go to Walmart, Krogers, or some other similar store, and get some utility tubs, sometimes they have rope handles. They are not nearly as expensive as nursery pots of the same size, and you just need to drill out some drainage holes. The ones I am using are about 18 gallons.

Or, use laundry baskets lined with heavy duty garbage bags like Sai.
They work great for him.

10 gallon are plenty big enough, even 5 gallon buckets produce good results for me. However, if you can spring it, the 15 gallon pots do produce bigger plants.

Haha, yeah it was getting nice, but just got some more snow this week with that storm that came through. Supposed to be mid to high 40's though from here on out so it won't hang around long.

I trimmed up the bottom 2" of the plants to improve airflow. It's working awesome, soil is already dry and ready for another watering tonight. More waterings = more nutes = bigger faster growing plants! I only trimmed off older bigger leaves, I left any new branch growth.

I was watering every other day for most of the season, but because of the lower leaves blocking airflow to the mix, that was down to every two to three days. Now it's back to every other day again.

Really... sounds like the forum might not always escaping the text correctly, then. It's not exactly shocking, considering this is built in PHP, but it's not a great sign as far as quality goes. Reminds me of little Bobby Tables.

I'm not trying to start a pissing contest. But, it always shows up fine for me, and that's been for several years. I do some light programming in php (very light), and if it's not escaped properly than no client would see it.at least from what I've seen ;)

Really depends on where he's seeing that behavior. It's entirely possible it's handled correctly in most places but not all. Plus there are various templates and partials floating around that you only ever see personalized for your own account, so it's also possible that whatever's happening is only happening in a place no one but the authenticated user would actually see.

If this were open source software we could track this down and fix it.

Hey all,

The tent is getting pretty crowded! Looks like I'm starting to see some calcium deficiency's in some plants also. Starting to see some leaf cupping and curling on some new growth. Have some yellow spots on a few leaves as well so might be short on magnesium also. I noticed yellow spots about a month ago, so I've been keeping an eye on it. I'm using RO water so I know it's had everything stripped from it.

About 10 days (3 or 4 waterings) ago I upped the Cal-Mag from 3ml/gal to 5ml/gal. Might have to bump it a little farther. We'll see if that helps. Also bumped the CNS-17 grow from 7ml/gal to 10ml/gal for the last 2 waterings.

Temps are low 70°s

Probably going to trim more lower leaves soon to improve airflow to the soil again, they will get trimmed in about 3 weeks anyway when they go outside for the season.

My Aji Pineapple seem to curl way under, completely upside-down whenever they get too close to the lights, time to raise them again...

Some yellow blotching of the leaves. Hard to get the lighting right to show it without getting a glare on the leaves...

Long time no update! Just a quickie...I've had them all potted up and in the garden for about 2 weeks now. Some of them were starting to yellow so I couldn't wait any more, but it was time anyway. Just fed them some ferts last night.

Yeah! I must of done something right this year, I started about a month later than last year and plants were bigger this year. Getting a little better with managing my feeding and watering schedule each year.
