Vato's 2010 season

i started 12 of my chinense varieties early, hoping to get a head start on the season in anticipation of the extremely short summer ahead. I figured starting them in december will get me a harvest in september or thereabouts whereas starting them in early march last year got me a harvest in november, after there had already been a few freezes (only harvested from potted plants, the rest were screwed) so i put the following into peat pellets on the 26th of december.

bhut jolokia
peach hab
lemon yellow hab
chocolate hab
tobago seasoning
pimenta de neyde
gold bullet
white bullet
devils tongue
numex suave orange
numex suave red
seeds from a giant orange habanero i found in mexico. it was as big as my hand, so i want to see if i can get a crop of them :onfire:

as i said they are all in peat pellets in a plastic container, clear lid. i put a heat mat under it, and went to home depot and bought a $30 oscillating ceramic heater to put next to it. i went to check on them this morning, and found 6 sprouts altogether. 2 gold bullets, 2 pdn, and 2 tobago seasoning. it was pretty exciting to see they started that fast, but since i still dont have my light setup figured out all the way i kinda wished they would have waited just a couple more days . anyway, thats the fastest ive ever seen peppers of any kind sprout. last year, the earliest ones took 11 days. dont know if its the heating or if theyre just really awesome seed, but whatever it is, it worked .

luckily i am prepared with little plastic 4 inch pots to use, and a small amount of potting mix. still need to get more though. i figure i will leave them in the starter for a couple more days and then ill transfer them to the pots. that should give me enough time to get the lighting taken care of.

ill start posting pics when i have some more sprouted.

sounds amazing

last year i put the peppers in the ground sometime in may. i cant remember exactly when though. we had a really cold, wet spring so i was hesitant to put them out at all, but figured if i was gonna get anything off of them i had to. bad year for hot peppers, but the sweet peppers and milder ones did fine.

keep in mind, these are just the chinense. i still have a few bacattums, a couple pubescens and a lot of annuums to start too, but ill wait till the end of the month or mid-february to start those.

ill see if this works....

this is the habanero i got on my trip to mexico back in october. it was as long as my hand is wide and at the widest point went from the palm crease all the way to the second crease on my fingers.

That sure is a big hab.NIce list, hope you have some heavy harvests this year, Have you had any experience with the Gold Bullet variety Heat/Flavor?

yeah, a friend of mine in new jersey sent me the seeds and sent a bag of the peppers too. the 'new' chiles i tried last year that i had never had before were bhut jolokia, devils tongue, red savina, caribbean red, and gold bullets. out of all of those, gold bullet were my favorite. its similar to your average orange habanero, but its got a much sweeter taste that kind of reminded me of pineapple and guayaba. it went really well with mango/peach salsa. i tried one whole when my heat tolerance wasnt so great, and it burned pretty bad, but after i had tried a few pieces of jolokia and devils tongue, i was able to eat another gold bullet without any real problems except my heart rate went up a bit. it shouldnt be any kind of a problem for an experienced chile head, although i see myself as 'still in training' as far as that goes.

anyway, nowhere near as hot as the bhut, but in my opinion its much more worth having because of the flavor

nice size hab. hopefully you'll get a winning crop from that one. I've never tried the gold bullet but I'm looking forward to some mustard habs this season.

ok, time for an update. so far ive had almost 40 sprouts, including the first of the bhut jolokias which first broke through the peat this morning. ive had 100% germination on gold and white bullets and peach habs. 4/5 have sprouted on pimenta de neyde, the big habanero i found in mexico, and yellow and chocolate habs. 3/5 on suave orange and the first suave red sprouted yesterday, two tobago seasoning, and 1 devils tongue has sprouted, which i was most surprised about because i got the seed from reimers before i had heard how bad their seed is. we'll have to wait and see if it actually is a devils tongue though...

white bullet averaged 9.6 days to germination, gold bullet averaged 8.8 days and peach hab was the fastest at 8.6 dtg.

again, i dont really know how to upload pictures so ill just put the link in. i have a picture there of one of the sprouts from the big habanero next to a sprout from a peach hab, and it is huge in comparison. do you think this is any indication that this plant holds the gene that made that other hab so big?

lastly, i think im going to need more to buy a couple more lights. with all those that have sprouted so far, theres no more room under the one fixture i have, and i still have a bunch of annuums and baccattums to plant as well as tomato seeds that will need to be started soon.

time for an update. i think all the seeds that are going to sprout have sprouted now. i just potted up the last of the bhut jolokias, and i have a few more peat pellets on the heat mat, but im thinking its safe to call them failed attempts. not to worry, even with those failing ive got probably 91% germination overall, 100% on most of the types i seeded, including jolokia, pimenta de neyde, yellow, chocolate and peach hab, gold and white bullets and suave orange. i started 5 seeds from that big habanero i found in mexico, all but one germinated, and one of those shriveled up because the seed jacket wouldnt come off by itself, and i couldnt figure out a way to get it off without killing it...so its dead anyway.

on the bright side, ive got true leaves forming left and right. the light i put up seems to be doing the job pretty well, although theres barely enough room under it for all of them, and i think when they get bigger i will have to start moving some to the other one ive got.

i havent been able to figure out how to post pictures from flckr, so i decided to try photobucket and see if it works.

you started the seeds for these on Jan 1?? If so, that's very impressive progress so far. they are moving quickly!

@noshow- yeah its a ceramic heater, that also has a regular fan setting on it. not the most amazing setup but its done the job so far.

@ballzworth- i started them dec 26th. i think my first sprout came up on jan 1. im just hoping they dont move too quickly. utah is a tricky place to grow hot pepers, you can never be 100% sure when its safe to set plants outside
