WalkGood 2013, 2014 and Beyond

This is my first Glog so excuse what ever mess I may create, lol. Took way to many pictures today (31), so Ill post the first 9 and add more in subsiquent posts but didn't think it a good idea to start out doube or triple posting just for additional pics. I will also be updating the thread over time to show growth, pods and such ... but the first few pics of are of the young ones. While Ive been growing my favorite peppers for around 17 years (guess, lol), I always limited myself to 3 varieties or less. Jamaican peppers/Hab, Jalapeño and Cayenne. When things got too tuff Id milk them till they died off and stop growing for a while and start fresh. Most years I only grew the Jamaicans which are my favorite for cooking, home made sauce and the occasional powder to rub meats with or put into certain recipes.

Current inventory:
 • 5 Jalapeño
 • 1 Cayenne
 • 1 Serrano
 • 7 Datil
 • 15 Jamaican Habs (3 large around 3 years old and 12 less than year old)
 • 12 more to be determined
The young ones below are not that old with the oldest being the JA Habs which are around 3 years old now. I happen to find THP site while looking for advice/knowledge to cure one of my Jalapeños, thanks for all the good info guys/girls! In 2012 I added Datil, Thai hot, Cayenne, Jalapeño and Serrano to the mix, totaling around 41 plants now. Hats off \o_ to those of you who grow many more, dont know how you find the time and patients when things go off. That said, Ive done my fair share of battling aphids, nematodes, snails and white fly to no end over the last 3 years. Fortunately I believe to have things under control for now so Ive decided to add 12 new peppers to the mix from the listed seeds shown below.

Ill select 12 to start near end of December or first week in January from the seeds below and give credit once I get some new ones going :)

Need to start clearing our yard to grow more & more & more peppers ;) (*WG rollseyes*)

Top left to right: two Thai Hot and one Cayenne. Bottom row all Datil. BTW I don't grow everything in clay pots, just happen to get a good deal on a bunch in yard sale for a few bucks.

Huge live Oak in background, there's 5 of them in front yard so the shades hard to avoid in first few hours of sun rise.

8 Jamaican Habs in ground and cherry tomatoe in the pot, I need to find a good place to plant the tomatoe soon.

Top left Serrano and more Datil, I'm probably going to gift a few Datils for xmass and some of the other peppers

Edit: final list copied to first post from post #40. These seeds were soaked in water on 12/31/12 and planted 1/1/13 \o/

Edit: This list is constantly being updated as new hooks pop. Even though I lost #5 :/ I will not give up as there are 2 other seeds in dat egg mon ....

A few links to some of my better posts ;)Did you say powder?Did you say MoA?Black light night shots & horn wormsReviews and taste impressions in no order

No more hornworm pictures from me as I hate them bastards -_-

I killed another one this morning, does anyone know or have a link to how they look when first hatching or very small? I find some droppings that are microscopic compared to the poop that the big ones drop. BTW that’s how I found the one I killed this morning, I saw the poop and recognized it, BAM I cut him in half quickly. I am still monitoring a jarred egg now for well over a week but it’s not hatched and for all I know it might not as the leaf it’s sitting on is now dried up. I’d like to kill the one I can not find on the plant that he’s pooping by. Thanks for any feedback ^_^

Ramon,

Have you ever tried BT?

I sprayed my Maters with it last summer when the hornworms were bad and it kills the crap out of them. One bite on a leaf that's been sprayed and they're dying...locks their gut up immediately!

Ramon, looks like things are rockin' there, bro.  Keep after those
hornworms.  Why on earth any deity would create these things is
beyond me.  They must serve some sort of purpose in the greater
scheme of things.  Your grow has done well considering the climate
issues.  Good work getting some MoA's to produce for you!

I only went back to page 70, but awesome pictures Ramon.  My little MoAs are so small, I'm just hoping to get something before fall.

Have you tried using a handheld blacklight at night to find the hornworms?  Someone here was talking not too long ago about how they fluoresce under UV.

Jamie thank you for the link, I think I should be able to spot that size but would like to see how they look out of the egg the first day. Eggs I’ve found are around the size of a pinhead and smaller, that size could be considered microscopic and I’ve yet to catch one that small. Maybe if I had Shane’s eyes I’d find them before they get big, hehehe. Have a great day brethren … as always I thank you for your input and stopping by!

Is that Bacillus Thuringiensis? I have some but have never sprayed it, only poured into soil to kill nematodes but it does not work on them from what I've seen. Questions: how many times do you have to spray it for that to work? Will it affect anything else or other bugs? Does it hurt beneficials?

Thanks Paul, I can put you on my list for 2nd generation A grade if you wish, just let me know. That said, I’m not sure that using seed from a near perfect pod would always yield more perfect pods but this will be interesting to see once others grow theirs out as Steve told me that he’s sending A’s as well. I agree with you on why would our deity create such a creature and have asked myself that question too till yesterday. I was checking plants and a green hornet fly by carrying a worm the same size as the link that Jamie provided above. I followed it to it’s nest and was even more impressed as the nest was in the natural holes of a giant coral landscaping rock, I assume it was for chow or to feed a young one. Thanks for stopping in Paul and have a great day!

Thanks Sawyer, not sure if you read the MoA review but I always welcome feedback to improve, disagree or enjoyment. If you don’t want to look for it click this smiley with headphones

I read that too and plant plan to get one but this has happened fast and so far I’ve avoided any bad damage because I’ve been on top of the checking. I hope to have time this Friday or weekend to check some out but I almost feel like this is over. Same time last year and only a few but much more eggs this year AFAIK.

Today’s modest harvest:

Nice lookings jals.  I'm hoping my sister brings me some sweet pickled jalapeno rings this weekend.

I haven't yet, but will check out your MoA review.  I look forward to that.

Yes....I spray every 3 or 4 days when needed., rain washes it off. It only kills caterpillars

Tons of info, here's one source, that's really about the modified plants:

Would do more research..issues happening..

It's excellent stuff! I had a friend tell me last season that she had a bad infestation of Cabbage Loopers in her Kale patch and asked me if I knew of an organic way to deal with them. I put her onto wettable BT powder, and within a week of her spraying they were all gone. Once they ingest it they go off their feed, so don't panic if they take 3-4 days to die off.

Man, I found the first hornworm of the season on my tomatoes last night. Right big bastard too, looked like he had been eating well. I smacked the hell out of him with a stick....and he started clicking at me. Raised up his front end & just started making noise. I've never once heard a sound come out of a caterpillar and it freaked me out a bit. He shut up after I squished him flat.

I second the BT recommendation though, I had good luck with it controlling caterpillars last season. This is the only one I've seen this season so I'm just laying down the law with a stick, no need to spray at the moment.

What are you gonna do with those jalapenos? They're begging to be turned into poppers!

Was in a hurry before, been upgrading servers to 2012 and one was giving me grief...

Anyways, I love when the Jal's cork like that, that's when the heat comes in. Great pics there!

Glad the harvesting continues!

Edit: I just had to add, TXCG hit send before me...yeah best part of finding one of those leaf eatin' bastards is making the green squirt on the ground, and feelin' that little pop under my foot...LOL

… Bonnets and Mango's.....in the Nesco.....a little "Mellow Yellow" for an appetizer?
Looked back and I forgot to answer this … My brother has enough mangos for anyone to get sick of eating them, by seasons end we are sick of them. Many times a lot of them go to waste because there’s only so many that one can gift away and eat. I thought I would dehydrate 2 small ones to test powdering them and see how they mix with salt and pepper like a sweet & spicy salt plus some additional experimenting. Have you ever used it and do you know any good uses? The powder taste great but I haven't had time to use it yet other than a taste. If I come up with something good I’ll post some pics and info here. I hope you don’t like the song because I’m hoping it’s better than the tune by Donovan ;)

Thanks Sawyer and I hope she brings dem Jals to you too! BTW I'm looking forward to seeing your pics, I've been super busy lately and am probably behind on a lot of glogs so feel free to pm me when you post them if I'm not the first to reply, have a great evening brethren!

Sounds great Rick but I hope it doesn’t take 3-4 days. I’m sure you know how hornworms can decimate a whole plant over night and if there’s more than one chances are a stub is all they’d leave :(

Thanks for stopping in TXCG, I have water soluble BT just never tried spraying it to kill hornworms. Sorry to read you had one too, hate dem bastards … he probably started clicking at you cause he saw Mr. Hand coming to chop him up, last ditch effort, lol, I’ve never heard a peep from dem but will start to listen now.

I’d give BT a try but I think at most there’s one more that may pop up unless that moth comes back to lay more eggs. I’ve been lucky that no serious damage has been done, heck I’d rather fight off hornworms than mites.

Yes a few poppers and hope to have more to powder up by the weekend.

Thanks Scott, sorry to read about your sever issues, hope you got dem fixed. Yea I like the corking too but can’t always wait for that if you’re scratching an itch, lol on the green squirt …

Hey guys thanks for popping in and providing great knowledge, hope everyone has a great evening ^_^

BT is what is in mosquito dunks.  Do they attack other organisms as well?
There are also BN (beneficial nematodes).  I just got a box - mix with water
and put around plants.  A little goes a long way.  The directions say mix in
a half- or whole gallon of water to cover 2000 square feet.  That's like a
tablespoon in an 18 gallon container!  Haven't mixed them yet - says to
do at night (sun kills them) and water before so they can migtate in the soil.
Evidently they are death on stuff, but not beneficials and worms.  Will be
interesting to see how they do - I have a couple of pine trees with wood borers.

Glog looks great, Ramon!

Why, do you think they might be aliens, and when you squish 'em they'll explode and you'll end up looking like the border cops in the opening of Men in Black? It might explain that one trying to communicate with you before you executed it... I'm just sayin'... ;)
LOL.  Pretty much.  I had a bad experience once when I was a kid.
Just read your MoA review, Ramon... love it.  That last part made me hungry, so now I have to go find something to eat.

Sawyer I remember reading your story, great blast from the past ;) Tanks for the thumbs up on the review, I’d like to get your take once you’ve tried your pods ^_^

Max and I did a night pepper recon and found numerous lizards sleeping on different peppers. I’m not sure that any little hornworm has much defense against these guys.
