WalkGood 2013, 2014 and Beyond

This is my first Glog so excuse what ever mess I may create, lol. Took way to many pictures today (31), so Ill post the first 9 and add more in subsiquent posts but didn't think it a good idea to start out doube or triple posting just for additional pics. I will also be updating the thread over time to show growth, pods and such ... but the first few pics of are of the young ones. While Ive been growing my favorite peppers for around 17 years (guess, lol), I always limited myself to 3 varieties or less. Jamaican peppers/Hab, Jalapeño and Cayenne. When things got too tuff Id milk them till they died off and stop growing for a while and start fresh. Most years I only grew the Jamaicans which are my favorite for cooking, home made sauce and the occasional powder to rub meats with or put into certain recipes.

Current inventory:
  • 5 Jalapeño
  • 1 Cayenne
  • 1 Serrano
  • 7 Datil
  • 15 Jamaican Habs (3 large around 3 years old and 12 less than year old)
  • 12 more to be determined
The young ones below are not that old with the oldest being the JA Habs which are around 3 years old now. I happen to find THP site while looking for advice/knowledge to cure one of my Jalapeños, thanks for all the good info guys/girls! In 2012 I added Datil, Thai hot, Cayenne, Jalapeño and Serrano to the mix, totaling around 41 plants now. Hats off \o_ to those of you who grow many more, dont know how you find the time and patients when things go off. That said, Ive done my fair share of battling aphids, nematodes, snails and white fly to no end over the last 3 years. Fortunately I believe to have things under control for now so Ive decided to add 12 new peppers to the mix from the listed seeds shown below.

Ill select 12 to start near end of December or first week in January from the seeds below and give credit once I get some new ones going :)

Need to start clearing our yard to grow more & more & more peppers ;) (*WG rollseyes*)

Top left to right: two Thai Hot and one Cayenne. Bottom row all Datil. BTW I don't grow everything in clay pots, just happen to get a good deal on a bunch in yard sale for a few bucks.

Huge live Oak in background, there's 5 of them in front yard so the shades hard to avoid in first few hours of sun rise.

8 Jamaican Habs in ground and cherry tomatoe in the pot, I need to find a good place to plant the tomatoe soon.

Top left Serrano and more Datil, I'm probably going to gift a few Datils for xmass and some of the other peppers

Edit: final list copied to first post from post #40. These seeds were soaked in water on 12/31/12 and planted 1/1/13 \o/

Edit: This list is constantly being updated as new hooks pop. Even though I lost #5 :/ I will not give up as there are 2 other seeds in dat egg mon ....

+1 on the choc review

And concerning dem girls... Well I guess you are okay as long as you don't crack them up by whipping out your.... Ahem.... Lightsaber :D
Thanks Al, I’ll try to write down my interpretation of taste once I cut the Choco Scorp open later this morning but I’m not sure I can do it justice. lol on the lightsaber … hope you have a great weekend mon!

Here’s the rest of the pickings, there’s a few C grades left on the plants but this was an incredibly low yield. Too much heat, mites, too young or all the rain ... who knows o_O

These 2 are the best shaped ones I've see yet possibly "A grade to A-" BTW I'll only be shipping A's once I get started.

Now a question to all the bug experts, are these ladybug eggs?

Looks like it Ramon. Pretty good youtube on this:

They can lay few very eggs or a lot and as the youtuby thingie states, they don't have to lay a ton of eggs to be effective!

The Cardi is on life support...and barely hangin on, as is the Yellow 7 Pot. We'll see I suppose. I've done all I can...nothing to do now but cross my fingers.

I’m sad to read this Shane but I stand pat if you can’t save them no one can, I have mucho faith in your green thumbs :) I will dance with seaweed on mi head brethren and ask the pepper Jah to bestow life back into them ;)

You can bet on that!
Again, thank you kid sir … you can bet you’ll soon be seeing MoA seeds very soon and I have some others you might be interested in, we’ll talk off line. As always, thank you for everything brethren! That “death by rosemary” is the bomb, you should start selling it, works great but per our conversation I’m going to clock back the strength cause of the heat we are having now and no rain. Have a great Sunday and week ahead!

Found and killed a fairly large hornworm on my White Bhut Jolokia, sorry no pics I just cut the bastage in half and tossed into canal. All you FL guys keep your eyes open, I’ve pulled over 50 eggs off various plants and there’s always a possibility one or two slips thru the cracks. I was fortunate with minimal damage that I noticed.

Fired up some Scotch Bonnets and Mango in the dehydrator this morning, hope I’ll have time to show off what I’ll do with them but I’ll try …

Follow up to this mornings ladybug eggs I found, they hatched \o/ and I planted them on the MoA that needed them most. Only 7 of them but all the little girls look fine and healthy. I don’t have a macro, sure would love to have one but this is the best I could pull off from what I have. They look perfect thru my magnifying glass, you can see them strolling around getting use to life and it almost looks like they leave no baggage behind as they’re eating their egg sacks or so it looks to me.

A lot of critters like that get off to a good start by eating their egg sacks. Seems gross to me, but it works for them.

Very nice looking podage! I can't relate to the too much heat thing, after the cold has almost killed off my plants several times this year.  Something in between my growing conditions and yours would probably work out perfectly.

You've posted some really amazing pics since I was here last Ramon! I'm lovin' the shots of ripe pepper pods, Orchids and especially the hatched ladybug larvae. I've seen the larvae, but never the eggs, and to catch them hatching is incredible. Insect eggs don't have a shell like bird eggs... no calcium, and eating the egg case is a shot of pure protein for them.

Anything the beneficial eats is fine with me, heck I’d throw a steak out if that kept them working 24/7 lolz. I know it’s hard to relate but imagine that all your leaves point down and look drained till the shade hits them and within the hour they look fine again. Mine only get around 6 hours per day but it’s killer heat right now. As far as the perfect place, I’d love to be back down in the Caribbean, great soil, great seafood and lots of outdoor adventures year round … no snow \o/

Thanks Erin, did you see all the MoA pics pages back? They were super tasty but very low yield on the first go round, I’m hoping for flowers soon but no new ones yet … finicky girls dem MoAs, lols.

Thanks Rick, I hope they make it … I did my part putting them on a plant that needs them and should give them a nice place to live. My only fear is that there are plenty of baby lizards now on all the plants, wish they ate mites, aphids and whitefly … I wouldn’t need anything else.

Well done Ramon!

Love the lady bug pics!

I would love to be able to catch that happening.
Thanks Scott, just saw your pickings, wow great harvest mon!

Thanks Matt! Just checked your pickling, looks killa … let me know how it turned out.

So far over the last several weeks I’ve pulled and crushed over 75 hornworm eggs. I kept thinking that one or two may slip by, one’s worst nightmare … well over the last two days I’ve killed off 2 this exact size. This one was on a 14” JA Hab and I’m hoping there’s not more that I missed.

Hey Ramon, wow my friend. Busy, busy, busy. The plants, the pods, the pictures, the info... here I am in the middle of winter and I am toasty again... thank you my friend. Let me go get a cloth to wipe my keyboard! Awesomex100

Nice " hands down "  photo's of the Bonnets....I don't expect  them to produce as well as the Jamaican Red's. None of my Jamaican Bonnets have been big producers in the past, although they have been steady throughout the season. The Habanero's put out more clusters of flowers and have shorter distances between the nodes.
Hopefully when the season picks up and the MoA's branch out more we'll see bigger harvests from all our plants.....I'm still waiting for the 1st pod..... :drooling:

Hornworms are a pain, I haven't seen one yet but there's always a few throughout the season. I keep checking for missing leaves...

Bonnets and Mango's.....in the Nesco.....a little "Mellow Yellow" for an appetizer ?

Nice catch with the Ladybug eggs and hatchery, they're ready for action.......I hope they don't need to  get called upon......... :D

Have a great week !

Always good to see a dead Hornworm!

I think the reason you're seeing so many is all the rain you've had...good a guess as any huh?

Glad you're keeping an eye out for them!

Those little soldiers will eat their weight in aphids every day...and mites too! Fun to watch them cruise around on their search and destroy missions...Your MOAs are freakin beautiful brother...
How big do they get, these I pictured are microscopic and the picture doesn’t do them justice, I can't even spot them on the plant but am fairly sure they're there. Thanks for the MoA compliments ^_^

Thanks Lournes I appreciate the compliments! Did you OW any of your plants and how are they doing? Also how are the ones you left in ground at the farm?

I'm liking the Hornworm's ultimate demise Ramon, not the damage! I guess you can't let your guard down for a minute, eh?
Damage wasn’t bad with the two I caught and killed but any damage does suck. I almost killed the sphinx moth today by whacking it with a bamboo pole but after it hit the ground it flew away dazed, man I was pissed as it went across the canal. I’d like to know how they look before they get this big as I do kill the eggs and I’m shocked at how many I’ve nailed this year but I never spotted a small worm till they’re big.

Ramon,

I killed two more of those bastards yesterday myself.

:violin:
That’s two that won’t damage your plants, this is the worst year I’ve ever seen, last year only three got two plants and that was it. Plants survived fine and I didn’t have any more issues with them. But this year I've killed over 75 eggs and now 2 worms :/

I hope the production picks up a bit but I’m thankful I had a few to eat and some to powder, now I’m in wait and see mode. Steve’s plants seem to be producing a lot of pods from what he’s told me when we talk, I’d be happy with a few extra. Guess I’ll have to grow more plants, lol. Yea the JA Habs out produce them like crazy but my JA’s that are producing are older plants and their yields aren’t as high as last year but I’m ok with two or three a day.

Nice that you don’t have any hornworms yet, I hate them and this years been the worst I’ve seen. Hope they stay away for you ^_^ The ladybug eggs and hatching was a fluke, I was looking for hornworm eggs and ran across them. I saved the leaf and checked here to make sure I was right. In the mean time I had place the leaf in a bowl with a little protective covering, a few hours later I checked on them and I noticed they hatched. I can’t believe how small they are. Thanks for checking Greg it’s always great to read your comments … have a great week brethren!

As always, thanks all for stopping in and providing me the best advice on da net, hope everyone has a great week ^_^
