WalkGood 2013, 2014 and Beyond

This is my first Glog so excuse what ever mess I may create, lol. Took way to many pictures today (31), so Ill post the first 9 and add more in subsiquent posts but didn't think it a good idea to start out doube or triple posting just for additional pics. I will also be updating the thread over time to show growth, pods and such ... but the first few pics of are of the young ones. While Ive been growing my favorite peppers for around 17 years (guess, lol), I always limited myself to 3 varieties or less. Jamaican peppers/Hab, Jalapeño and Cayenne. When things got too tuff Id milk them till they died off and stop growing for a while and start fresh. Most years I only grew the Jamaicans which are my favorite for cooking, home made sauce and the occasional powder to rub meats with or put into certain recipes.

Current inventory:
  • 5 Jalapeño
  • 1 Cayenne
  • 1 Serrano
  • 7 Datil
  • 15 Jamaican Habs (3 large around 3 years old and 12 less than year old)
  • 12 more to be determined
The young ones below are not that old with the oldest being the JA Habs which are around 3 years old now. I happen to find THP site while looking for advice/knowledge to cure one of my Jalapeños, thanks for all the good info guys/girls! In 2012 I added Datil, Thai hot, Cayenne, Jalapeño and Serrano to the mix, totaling around 41 plants now. Hats off \o_ to those of you who grow many more, dont know how you find the time and patients when things go off. That said, Ive done my fair share of battling aphids, nematodes, snails and white fly to no end over the last 3 years. Fortunately I believe to have things under control for now so Ive decided to add 12 new peppers to the mix from the listed seeds shown below.

Ill select 12 to start near end of December or first week in January from the seeds below and give credit once I get some new ones going :)

Need to start clearing our yard to grow more & more & more peppers ;) (*WG rollseyes*)

Top left to right: two Thai Hot and one Cayenne. Bottom row all Datil. BTW I don't grow everything in clay pots, just happen to get a good deal on a bunch in yard sale for a few bucks.

Huge live Oak in background, there's 5 of them in front yard so the shades hard to avoid in first few hours of sun rise.

8 Jamaican Habs in ground and cherry tomatoe in the pot, I need to find a good place to plant the tomatoe soon.

Top left Serrano and more Datil, I'm probably going to gift a few Datils for xmass and some of the other peppers

Edit: final list copied to first post from post #40. These seeds were soaked in water on 12/31/12 and planted 1/1/13 \o/

Edit: This list is constantly being updated as new hooks pop. Even though I lost #5 :/ I will not give up as there are 2 other seeds in dat egg mon ....

Phheeww...hard to keep up with some of you guys here. Those are cool pics with the long exposure time, did you hold the camera by hand for those? ? :liar:

Cool little hornworm slayer you have,is that an Anole? Never thought they would eat something that big.

Thank you sir! Appreciate the seed offer, I will send you some of my homemade chili salt if you'd like. I make my own sea salt using the water from the cove I live on. Going to make some great chili salts again this year once I have a bunch of ripe pods. I will PM you in the fall all the best
Wow that sounds great, I would love to try it. The only salt ponds I’ve ever been to are in Yallahs JA where the Indians use to salt their meats for drying out before jerking them. But other than a mouth full of salt water while surfing a point in dat area I did not try it there, hehe.

Most beautiful pods award Mon!

Yeah the BT is a re-application after every 3 or 4 days. cool thing is one bite..they're done!

Have a great week!
Thank you Scott, not sure if that is supposed to be the right look. Other pods on the plant are more scorpion looking but they are not ripe yet. I’ll try to take some pictures of the better phenotype when they ripen.

I hope your Yellow Brain did not suffer, I too am trying to bat them out of the air. I’ve been using Chris’s method of an old tennis racket, great idea Chris! Now to find dem suckers …

Thanks Matt, I don’t always use the light box but what I really like about mine is that it folds flat and it can be used for light deflection via the stretched cloth. Works great on small objects like peppers, powder, etc… From what I’ve seen you take great pictures too, so you shouldn’t have any issues using a light box. I use two artificial light sources depending on the subject IIRC a 300 watt & 500 watt, but lighting is critical with them. That said the sun makes a great source too that I often use w/box. BTW there are plenty of tutorials on the net for home made light boxes too.

I hear ya Trippa, I’m way behind too and I’ll make it a point to catch up on yours today. Thank you for the kind kudos mi pepper lovin brethren ^_^

Now for something completely different, not sideways but upside down ladybug action, hehehe. These two have been going at it for days on my chocolate scorp, eggs everywhere \o/ The gal also eats and cruises around during the event while the hitch hiker flaps his little wings every now and then, guess I'd be flapping with so much action, hahaha

First two Trinidad Scorpion pods (seed via PIC 1, Greg), looks like the second one may have a tail VS the first one.

The White Bhut is healing some even though the main stalk is gone from that squall, only two side branches are holding like 5 pods … what a difference if the main stalk was still there this thing would be full up cause I lost dozens of little pods when she broke. I say better some than none, so I’m still excited \o/

Non pic of cilantro seeding which I’ll replant before summers end so that they grow out in cooler weather. Check out all the aphids ... there's been one or two ladybugs working this plant for days ...

Ramon, that Chocolate TScorp looks killer! Nice and oily inside too :)

Nice!
Thanks Bill and it was tremendously hot picante as well. I’m trying to get a handle on the taste as I do not detect much that I can identify and IMHO the placenta has more taste.

While I take all my shots handheld, not any timed exposures, tripod comes in handy for all long exposures. I believe the correct name is Anoles so you are correct, but we just call them lizards. There is a much larger version here that is green we call Cuban Anoles but they’re no local. I too am having a hard time keeping up with glog’s and yes they do move fast … lately I’ve been tied up with a lot of projects.

Holler atcha Monday! Hoping for cooler Yankee weather!

Love that chocolate scorp. What does it taste like? Like a scorp or like other pungent choc plants like chocolate hab?

Everything is looking great.

Don't know where to begin, what an update !

Aha, Caribbean Mellow Yellow......that's a good one. The powder looks nice.

I can see a Yellow Sofrito happening with some of your MoA's.

Once I can get some green Aji Cachucha's on my plants I'll incorporate those with some green MoA's......(non "A" shape) into a Green Sofrito.

Time exposures of the peppers.......cool man, the black light photos remind me of the old days ....felt raised posters....blacklights...only one thing missing......." the wall " ..to hang them on..............

Great catch with the lizard photos,  I like'em series of photos....and I hate them hornworms.

Upside down ladybugs.......new position , .that lady has to support more than her own weight on dat one...

The Scorps and White Bhuts look cool, they photograph nicely.....I hope they pack der heat. I know the Red Bhut won't let you down.

Once again....this glog aims to please

Hey man that ladybug stuff is NSFW! Lol jk. Awesome to see you will have multi generational aphid control! Pods looking good, can't wait to see them get some colour!
(Despite some windy damage, not tha such forces could ever hold you back!)

Thanks for the kudos Greg, the name was your idea all I did was add the “Caribbean,” lol. You should try this one, it’s a very nice mix and does mellow it out, everyone in da house has been loving dis except our youngest son as he doesn’t like peppers :/

Started using BT spray and the worms have dropped like flies, lol. Not even checking as close for the eggs but they have diminished substantially. Now we’re into aphid season, if it’s not one thing it’s another in this wonderful climate. Luckily I spotted them early and the neem spray has done the trick, what next :o

Hope you have a great day brethren!

Oh and stay tuned I'll be posting a half azz Chocolate Scorpion review later ...

Chocolate Scorpion (Capsicum Chinese)

I have decided to post this review even though I feel it is a work in progress for me to keep learning my taste identification abilities with certain pods that I do not feel dead on in the taste identification. I have to admit, this peppers taste is tuff for me to nail down as I have only ever tried 3 of these bad girls ever. Between our son and I we bounced taste impressions back and forth ending up eating more than we intended. Keeping that in mind, I hope you enjoy the read.

This pod was huge, the largest one on our bush measuring just over 3 inches long by almost 2 inches at the widest point (estimate), far larger than all the other pods developing and the first to ripen on Kenya. She lacks smooth texture and is fairly twisted with some lumps but no bumps, a mean looking street chick. I held off on posting and was able to pick a second pod to taste further; I don’t mean the taste when used to make a finished product but the unadulterated raw taste impressions. While I try to touch on the heat factor that is always secondary for me and I hope you’ve noticed from my previous reviews.

Her heat level is very high possibly as hot as the Butch T Scorpion depending on one’s growing conditions. From what I have read a possible 1.2 million Scoville heat units (SHU), now that’s some capsaicin! That said this pepper is not suitable for people who like only safe and familiar things or are easily intimidated. To be honest I was a bit scared even though I was only going to try a few slivers and ended up eating half the placenta, not bad for me lol.

So how did she taste? Well to be honest I held off on posting this waiting to eat the second ripening one on the bush. I’ve read that Chocolate Scorpions don’t produce a lot of pods but who ever wrote that has obviously never met Kenya as she’s full up. There must be 50+ pods on her slender sexy arms.

Here were my first thoughts unedited in bullets as I tasted her, I will update this after I try more pods. That said I welcome input and opinions from members so I can hone my thoughts/skill before the next try. Another one should be ripe in the next few days.
  • Dry flavor lacking moisture but smooth, this does not mean it was lacking in capsicum oils because there definitely was enough, it just had a dry taste.
  • Neutral (not sweet but definitely not bitter or acidic)
  • Grain-like aroma like a malt flavor, boarder line earthy but not so in the flavor, more so in the smell which can be a bit nutty and pungent
  • Aftertaste is pleasant with a good long burn. For me it was needing my tongue and part way down my throat
  • I expected a robust, rich flavor after noting the pungent aroma but was surprised at a smooth, full, melodious dry and somewhat flat flavor until the picante kicked in. I found more flavor in the placenta which was tastier IMHO
  • Eaten alone I would not say delicious but palatable. But if using for cooking, dips/spread, BBQ sauce or hot sauce I can see this pepper working magic. I used my first one for a dip which came out very tasty
  • Spicy, hot, fiery, sharp, stinging, somehow she sings lively and strong with a penetrating taste
Most of you guys/girls have more experience with this specific pepper and others like it very much, again I welcome feedback, input and advice. Thank you for reading and as I said I will try to update this post over time as my pallet becomes more in tune with the Chocolate Scorpion …
