WalkGood 2013, 2014 and Beyond

This is my first Glog so excuse what ever mess I may create, lol. Took way to many pictures today (31), so Ill post the first 9 and add more in subsiquent posts but didn't think it a good idea to start out doube or triple posting just for additional pics. I will also be updating the thread over time to show growth, pods and such ... but the first few pics of are of the young ones. While Ive been growing my favorite peppers for around 17 years (guess, lol), I always limited myself to 3 varieties or less. Jamaican peppers/Hab, Jalapeño and Cayenne. When things got too tuff Id milk them till they died off and stop growing for a while and start fresh. Most years I only grew the Jamaicans which are my favorite for cooking, home made sauce and the occasional powder to rub meats with or put into certain recipes.

Current inventory:
  • 5 Jalapeño
  • 1 Cayenne
  • 1 Serrano
  • 7 Datil
  • 15 Jamaican Habs (3 large around 3 years old and 12 less than year old)
  • 12 more to be determined
The young ones below are not that old with the oldest being the JA Habs which are around 3 years old now. I happen to find THP site while looking for advice/knowledge to cure one of my Jalapeños, thanks for all the good info guys/girls! In 2012 I added Datil, Thai hot, Cayenne, Jalapeño and Serrano to the mix, totaling around 41 plants now. Hats off \o_ to those of you who grow many more, dont know how you find the time and patients when things go off. That said, Ive done my fair share of battling aphids, nematodes, snails and white fly to no end over the last 3 years. Fortunately I believe to have things under control for now so Ive decided to add 12 new peppers to the mix from the listed seeds shown below.

Ill select 12 to start near end of December or first week in January from the seeds below and give credit once I get some new ones going :)

Need to start clearing our yard to grow more & more & more peppers ;) (*WG rollseyes*)

Top left to right: two Thai Hot and one Cayenne. Bottom row all Datil. BTW I don't grow everything in clay pots, just happen to get a good deal on a bunch in yard sale for a few bucks.

Huge live Oak in background, there's 5 of them in front yard so the shades hard to avoid in first few hours of sun rise.

8 Jamaican Habs in ground and cherry tomatoe in the pot, I need to find a good place to plant the tomatoe soon.

Top left Serrano and more Datil, I'm probably going to gift a few Datils for xmass and some of the other peppers

Edit: final list copied to first post from post #40. These seeds were soaked in water on 12/31/12 and planted 1/1/13 \o/

Edit: This list is constantly being updated as new hooks pop. Even though I lost #5 :/ I will not give up as there are 2 other seeds in dat egg mon ....

Nice review bro. Choc scorpion is on my possible grow list so I was really interested on your thoughts ....now I am less decided then ever ;)
Grow it for sure and let me know your thoughts. The plant is beautiful, very lush, strong and still growing. She’s currently just over 3’ tall and full of green pods. There would be more if not for the heat wave we currently have as it’s started dropping some flowers but have no doubt it will fill up again on second round. I should have 2 more pods ripe in the next few days, not sure what I’ll make with them but I’m sure to taste again. On another note we all have different taste buds and this is why I asked for feedback, I keep thinking I’ve missed a specific flavor trait. Good luck with yours ^_^

Nice review, I snapped some pictures for Dale of these beauties and of course had to have a taste. That is one great looking pod!
Thanks Chris, this review was hard as it didn’t flow to me like the MoA review did. So far that first pod was the largest on the plant but there’s another that’s not far behind in size that should be ready soon. Link to your pics?

Have a great 4th Ramon   and thanks for the review! An adroit handling of a street-smart chick who's lived a rough life but thrives by her wits and beauty. Brilliant description! How many days from seed to harvest in your heat?

Hola Annie and thank you for the review kudos, as you know this one didn’t come as easy as the MoA review but I’m learning ^_^ Your review was awesome as well muchacha! I planted that seed on 1/1/13 and it didn’t hook till 31 days later so ruff, ruff, ruff, ruff, ruff math is 5 ruffs months ... yea I can be a dog too ;)

Nice Ramon, bravo! I want to grow those now :)
You should grow some Chocolate Scorpions, I’ll bet they would be a huge success in your new venture. It’s great how we inspire each others grows, there’s a few of yours I’d like to grow as well. Speaking of growing your seed, everyone I have to give Lourens a Big Up Mon! I received a package all the way from South Africa and I personally know he had a PITA of a time getting it thru Miami customs, thank you mi brethren!

Small harvest this morning compared to the harvests I had last year where I’d get between one to two pounds ripen all at the same time. It seems this year only a few at a time while there’s plenty left on da bush plants ...

Certainly not as large as my last pineapple harvest but it was all yellow so time to harvest it this morning. Next to her is another one that still has time to grow, hopefully she’ll get really big before she begins to turn color.

Mama sprung a slip so I’ll leave the plant in the pot till the slip gets large enough to remove and replant. I prefer growing them from slips because they yield fruit so much faster (8 months VS 2 to 3 years).

When I pick the fruit I always leave 3 or 4 inches of the supporting stalk and place her into a vase of filtered drinking water so she can suck it in and become juicer. AFAIK there is no proof this is true but it has always worked for me so why change my method. Right is one of 3 varieties of ginger I grow pictured, this one is red ginger ans she's killa in foods ^_^

Remember the broken White Bhut Jolokia stalk, well she’s springing roots mon … 1st pepper clone attempt by me but it doesn’t seem any different than all the other garden plants I’ve cloned. The other two branches I'm trying soil method, their stlaks are green but no new growth yet.

And here’s her new growth of leaves at her top \o/

In closing I’ll leave you to guess and she’s he’s edible, hehehe

Thanks for looking, reading, comments and sharing your ideas with me. I hope everyone has a fantastic 4th of July!

Great updates, Ramon!  Loved the write-up on the Chocolate Scorp.  Very cool (hot)!  Saw the pineapple in the vase and thought it was some sort of Florida cocktail!  ;)

Great harvest shot.  Glad to see the ripe chiles coming along.  Hat's off to Lourens.  Looks like a great selection.

Happy 4th!

Thanks Doc it’s great to receive kudos from a doctor with two green thumbs and thank you for the kind words on the Choco Scorp review. I had a hard time with it compared to the MoA review, it’s easier to talk write about something one is more familiar with. Never read that the water pineapple trick works for sure but I feel they do get juicer. Interesting idea on FL cocktail, a little rum and I’ll let you know how she turns out ;)

Last small update of nons for today … three different varieties of Heliconia plants flowering, in real life the colors they produce are simply amazing. I have peeps ask if they are real all the time, lol. In JA they call dem all banana plants even though they are not edible …

Nice picture, I have two that have developed just like the one on the far left of your picture. I also find it interesting that there are so many different shaped pods on the plants, a few look as if they were Bhut pods but still green and others have traits from different pepper pods.

Thanks Carl but it was not hard IMHO, a little rain water in the cup always does the trick, I didn’t use any root stimulator or anything. After posting and looking at her again I went to check out the ones in soil, while they look awful one has new growth and both are still mighty green. If I was a betting mon, I’d say one for sure and the other looks like it could make it too. The awful part is just the dried hanging leaves and minor brown branches but we can look past that and see the big picture. Happy 4th mon!

Very cool, I’d wish you luck on your clone but I honestly don’t think you MR. Green Thumbs needs my luck, lol. As always, thanks for the kudos brethren and I’ll keep my eye on da mail. BTW when do you want me to pull the trigger on your package?

Happy 4th to you and everyone else ^_^
