Weeds

How do you guys keep the weeds down in your pepper garden? I'm having issues with some type of grass growing in my garden. I've been pulling a lot out every day but just can't seem to stay ahead of it.

Do some use herbicides? what type?

do some just pull and bear it?

Howdy,

Bees, Ladybugs, Praying Mantis, and other insects which prey on the destructive bugs in your garden often use weeds for their shelter and food.

That said try mulching...

a thick layer of organic mulch such as grass clippings, leaves, garden bark or other such materials is the best choice. Spreading one of these organic mulches several inches thick, throughout the garden will greatly aid in your weeding efforts, as well as improving the soil as it decomposes over time.

Synthetic mulches such as black polyethylene film or the commercially available 'weed blocker' mulches are also effective methods of weed control.

You could try growing in pots - that is what some of the heavyweights here like AJ do -

This also allows you to use a potting mix optimized for peppers, rather than whatever soil type you got stuck with in your area.

Or you could just do what I do, and grow indoors - haven't had a weed problem yet! ;)

I've used straw mulch for years and it helps to keep the weeds under control. You still have to spend some time on your hands and knees pulling but putting a little blood, sweat and tears into your garden helps seal the bond.

I just pull them or use a hoe. This year I am trying something different. I cut the bottoms off my yogurt containers that I had them growing in and planted the container in the ground. This way I can direct the nutrients to them when I fertilize and also not worry about getting the plants when it comes time to hoe or rake the weeds out.

Well said. Weeding is therapeutic as well...works way better than Prozac...And I love spending all that extra time getting to better know my plants...

Black plastic works great. If you are trying to keep it organic and pet safe you could try distilled vinegar. Boil it then let to cool for about 5 minutes or so (temp still should be pretty warm). The put it in a spray bottle. Squirt those damn weeds. What it does it dry out the weeds all the way to the roots. Give them a few squirts and watch they die! BTW don't spay on your pepper plants. The spray doesn't know difference between weeds and pepper plants :) . Good Luck!

why you have to boil it ?

I love weeding my gardens. The more time I can spend doing something in my gardens the better I feel. There's too many things now in my life that are running on auto. Weeding might be time consuming but ya never know whats gona come up - maybe some beautiful wildflower that you can transplant and create a wildflower garden. Good for your health too.

Would you like to come weed my garden? You can keep any flowers that you find and I won't even charge you for the exercise.
