Still, without actual HPLC test numbers these all come down to just one person's subjective opinion. Also, remember that individual pods can vary a bit in heat, even if they came from the same plant. Which makes it even trickier when we are trying to split hairs about which insanely hot pepper variety might be slightly hotter than all of the other face-melters out there. It is a little like trying to determine which volcano is the hottest in the world just by sticking your finger in the lava.

I saw on THP but can't find the thread... Ripe peppers are hotter than green/unripe in Scoville tests, but can seem less hot on the palate due to the sugars that form as a pepper ripens. The sweetness can lessen the perception of heat in our mouths, even if the absolute value of heat in ripe peppers is greater.Edmick said:

As for the debate about the hottest, there are just too many, and pepper can vary so much that I think it's impossible to just stick to one: Brain Strains, Morugas, the Mamas, Bhutlahs, Apocalypse, all in their red or chocolate variants, just to name a few

UBSC Brown is the hottest pepper I've ever tried. Had them tested last year at a little over 1.5 million SHU and this year they tested at a little over 1.6 Million SHU.
I don't know what's the hottest, and I don't care. I just want to say that this whole "it wasn't actually a mustard! It was just unripe!" story sounds like the usual Ed Currie/ Pucker Butt BS. I believe basically NOTHING said by that whole camp. Habitual liars, and bullies.
My main bone to pick with them is that 90% of their reason for being in the chilli game is the money. Sure, they're a business, so making money is their job, but surely there is a more transparent, responsible, straightforward and honest way of doing so? I don't like being strung along, not one bit. If they think they have a new hottest, they should go to the labs, get it tested, get it certified, and then share it with the world (at a profit, obviously). Mustard would be cool to see in the top spot but nothing scares the crowds at a chilli eating competition like a white or peach. My personal preference, though, would be Pink.
There are so few peppers that finish pink and they're all sold as purples due to their pre-ripening shade. It would be great to see them gain awareness and having their unique colouration as the way to tell a ripe record holder would be an excellent way to get it.
Hottest I've come across so far: reddish-brown Chocolate Bhutlahs. Insanely hot.
Also, I don't like the aroma/flavor of most browns (not into floral/earthy/smokey), but these actually have a really good flavor, in my opinion. Maybe, it's because they are more reddish than the average chocolate pod?
The bright 4000k LED lighting in these pics make them look more red than they actually are, but they do have a red tinge to them even in natural lighting.
