Hops. Ale doesn't have hops in it. Centuries ago ale was drunk in the UK coz we didn't have hops here. In the 15th century Dutch merchants started coming to the UK in larger numbers than ever before and bought beer and hops with them. We readily embraced beer drinking and started brewing our own. So technically speaking ale doesn't exist any more - if ale has hops in it then it's beer - beer has hops in it coz it's beer, so what's the difference?

There is no difference. It's ALL beer. The difference's are only in the method of fermentation. Top vs. bottom fermenting. Hops were unavailable when the Babylonian's first discovered brewing. It was beer then..still beer now.

Salute', TB.

Exactly - that's why I wonder why brewers keep up this pretence of "ale". Lager yeast ferments from the bottom - all other beer yeasts ferment on the surface. So if there's got to be seperate terms why don't they talk of lager AND beer and just drop the ale business?

Yuengling Lager.

Yuengling is the best of the BIG breweries by far.

I am a Yuengling Lager fan as well. I also enjoy their Lord Chesterfield Ale. I actually haven't had either in a while but I use to drink them a lot at school (went to school in PA).

It's all beer. You say talk of lager and beer? Lager is beer. Ale is beer. You say hops were/are not in ale? Hops were not in any beer at the beginning. Hops are a later addition. It's all beer man! Drink up!

ALE: A beer that is typically "warm" fermented (65F-70F) and typically has lots of flavor.

Examples are: Stouts, porters, pale ales, IPA's, etc.

LAGER: A beer that is fermented cooler (65F or so) and then cooled to near freezing, so that much of the flavor falls out of suspension.

Examples are: Bud lite, Miller lite, amberbock, oktoberfests(maerzens), etc.

I am an ale man in general.
Why did you throw shi**y lagers in as an example? LOL. Biased poll!

Pale ale is my beer but I like a good lager, like I said, in summer or when you're working up a sweat.

Absolutely correct.

Honestly, I couldn't think of good examples of lagers since they suck.(;))

we use the terms ale and lager so that when talking about beers you can tell some your preference straight with out confusion ale and lager are sub categories of beer simply.
i myself prefer ales as you get a much wider range of flavours to choose from lager is ok but the only choice you really have is decent and piss

Sorry! since I don't have a time machine, I had to just quote this again and give it a big ol' Texas

Exactly. Lagering removes flavor, and, incidentally, very healthful antioxidents. So I am kinda like "what's the point?".

Do you do any of the caribbean beers? They all lagers and they're really good. Especially Carib and Kalik.

There's some very good lagers out there, but they're outweighed by the crap ones. Budweiser Budvar (not to be confused with that muck brewed by Anheuser Busch) is very tasty with a real malty twang. Lowenbrau Oktoberfest is excellent fruity/malty and it's 6.5% vol.

I think only the beer snobs participated....:(

Good to see you all, but I hoped we would get a good sense of how many THP'ers give a shit about their beer.

I guess I could assume that most of the non voters would pick door #4.

To each his/her own, but I am going to have to vehemently disagree there. I would choose regular Budweiser each and every time over Yuengling Lager. There are few beers that are worse, in my experience.

Red Stripe is excellent in Jamaica. The export version that we get here, in the States, is made differently and doesn't compare. I made the mistake of picking some up when I got back from a vacation.

That is true. Beer means "fermented barley malt beverage". Whether it's an ale or a lager depends on the yeast strain used for fermentation. Hops, being the bittering agent, doesn't determine whether or not it's classified as ale, beer, lager, or that crap that they make in Pottsville, PA! Just kidding JayT. :)

I stay away from Red Stripe here because there seems to be no consistency except for that fact it's a 50/50 beer. Half the time here it's old and skunky, and half the time it's, er, "ok". In Jamaica, yeah, i'll order it all day, but not here. But i've never had that problem with Carib or Kalik.

Birra Moretti (not sure if that's the correct spelling) is excellent as is Erdinger (I know it's a weissbeer but it's close enough to lager when it's sunny).
I'm also partial to tesco's Bier D'Or stubbies, great for taking with you to BBQ's, parties etc and they taste quite nice as well as being very cheap.

I voted ale btw, I love the ales. :)
