when to pick red habs/ red savina's/Naga's

Hi all, my question is this: have various sized peppers all red ripe. I try and pull slightly if pepper comes off its ready.Now what do I do to the peppers that don't pull off. Some are large some are small except for the Naga's all large.If pepper is red ripe ;yet small (varying sizes) DO I PICK IT ? Final question is if red ripe peeper i.e. small size continue to grow or when a pepper is ripe it stops growing????? Help Please? :cool: cRAYZy
 
some of the smaller, bird type peppers will pull off very easily when ripe, this is a developed trait within the species that assists survival of the plant. if a bird can get the fruit off easy there is more chance it will eat the pod and therefore disperse the seeds in its droppings. plants that have been developed/cultivated by humans have been done so for differing reasons. some for disease resistance, others for colour and pod shape, heat levels, plant height. for cultivated plants it is sometimes beneficial for the pods to remain firmly attached to the plant rather than drop off too easily - this may explain why some of your pods are fully mature yet do not readily detach even though they are ripe. I am not aware of any pepper that continues to grow in size after it reaches its ripe colour.

i let my serrano's go red and they were a bear to get off the plant had to cut them off with my thumbnail to get them off without taking the whole branch. while others even green would fall off if you hit the pot to hard. so i agree with chilliman64 ripness does not matter. I have always said once its red its dead. (as in detached from the plant).
 
Yeah, I have noticed that Trinidad Seasoning peppers pop right off when they're fully ripe. As a matter of fact, if I don't get them picked, they'll fall off. On the other pod, I've see Lemon Drops dry on the plant.

But this isn't about growing or gardening, it's about harvesting.

Say, maybe what we need is yet another forum.
 
Ive picked peppers that were just starting to ripen left those ones on the counter and they ripen in a few days.The way I see it by doing that the nutrients go to the peppers that need it and are still growing
 
Put unripe peppers(if you must pick them) in a paper bag by themselves or with tomatos or banana and the ethylene gas should ripen them quicker.
