cheat if you want...

But...I don't think my 5 gallon nursery containers actually hold 5 gallon volume....more like 4...

You're correct. I see this come up now and again, but nursery containers started shrinking at some point, but no one bothered to change what they call them. I guess you can sell a shrub for more money when you call the pot its roots are in 5 gallons instead of 4.3 gallons.

I use a lot of food grade 5 gallon buckets (pickle buckets, lately) to plant things in because I can get them cheap ($2), they're sturdy, relatively safe from contaminates, and they have a handle if I need to pick them up and move them.

I couldn't sleep because what I said will give an approximate volume of the container so to be more accurate in determining the volume of the container....

*rolling my eyes*

The humus and coco go really well together. in 5 gallon pots it'll take care of your plants to a certain point. proper humus is mostly nutrients and will not be a "short term thing". you will need to fertilize your plant at some point, but it'll take a while. once you do choose to fertilize (I don't recommend of fertilizing before it's needed), you can go with coco fertilizers or soil fertilizers... you're pick.

some days it doesn't matter whether I have one or not... ;)

I'm enjoying this thread...but I agree with Mike...what's wrong with dirt or grow mix? We tried the mix your own for umpteen grow totes and containers, finally said enough...just filled them with mix and added nutrients as needed. Not exactly scientific but sure simplifies life. I think if I was trying something new like coir or humus I'd use it on a few pots and compare the results to see if it was worth the expense. JMO

Actually I agree, that's what I did. even if just for your own peace and quiet, you might wanna try it first small-scale.
